Choosing Risk Over Again

There was a time I didn’t eat fried rice, because of an experience when I was sick. If I went somewhere, and I was offered fried rice, I would refuse it, saying that everytime I ate fried rice, it left my stomach upset. After the particular experience, where I suffered food poisoning after eating fried rice, I avoided it like a plague. However, there was a day I was served fried rice and it was so enticing, that I decided to throw caution to the wind, and eat it. I ate it, preparing myself for whatever came with it. I literally spent my whole day, awaiting the first sign of vomiting, and surprisingly, I was disappointed when nothing happened.

I hadn’t eaten fried rice in a long while, because I feared for what happened to be a coincidence years back. Long story cut short, fried rice now, is one of my favorite ways to prepare rice. It’s just so tasty, and filled with so much, that simply scooping a spoonful has your mood lifted automatically. Words would fail to describe how much I enjoy eating that particular meal now. Everytime I remember how I denied myself the pleasure of this food, all thanks to my fear, I remind myself twice, of why I need to denounce fear, everytime it starts building.

Fear is one trait designed to keep you stagnant. It’s one trait that automatically makes something attainable appear unrealistic. Learning to overcome fear, is the only way to achieve your goals. Otherwise, the only thing one would achieve, are the things one is familiar with. Trying out new things, fear of past experiences reoccurring, these are all ways fear is projected, under the disguise of caution, but it really isn’t.

Like my favorite creator will say ‘Your brain is programmed to keep you safe, so it’ll only want to do things that are safe’. It’ll only be willing to venture into a new business, if you’ve done it before. The only way to break through this, and not let your brain hinder you, all the while labeling it as risk management is to remind yourself how living life in itself, is a risk. Every aspect of our lives, is a risk. The mere act of going out and coming in, is risk enough. But choosing not to venture into something, because it’s risky, isn’t always a good idea. Sometimes, it’s you looking out for yourself, and sometimes, it’s you holding yourself back from everything that could be yours.

Doing things not because of how you feel, but because they need to be done, is the best way to work towards your goals. So, on days where motivation doesn’t drive you towards it, your discipline will do so. I’ve written about this my experience with rice, sometime ago, but I thought so much about this prompt, and surprisingly this was the only experience that came to mind. So, why not?
