FIFA Club World Cup: Origins

Today I want to talk to you about another of my passions, soccer. I haven't posted about it before because I didn't know how to approach the subject, but today I'm taking the plunge because, as the saying goes, there's a first time for everything.
On this occasion, I'm here to talk to you about the FIFA Club World Cup, and I'll tell you about the origins of the competition, the different formats that have been used, and the most recent change, with the new 32-club format, which is being implemented starting this year.
Origins and background.
The first edition of the tournament took place in January 2000 in Brazil, under the name Club World Cup, bringing together eight continental champions in a single venue. Its most direct predecessor was the Intercontinental Cup, held from 1960 to 2004, which pitted only the champions of the UEFA Champions League and the Copa Libertadores de América against each other.
Initial format (2000), predecessor, and merger.
As mentioned above, between 1960 and 2004, the Intercontinental Cup was held, pitting the champions of the European Champions League against the champions of the Copa Libertadores de América.
In 2000, the pilot plan for the Club World Cup was implemented with eight teams, consisting of the six continental champions plus two invited teams, and was played with a group stage and knockout stages.
By 2005, it was decided to merge both tournaments, resulting in the Club World Cup, with a knockout format of seven teams, played every December in Japan until 2008 and then in the United Arab Emirates and Morocco.
Frequency and participants.
Between 2005 and 2023, it was played every year and the following teams participated:
- UEFA Champions League (direct champion).
- Copa Libertadores (direct champion).
- Champions of AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, and OFC.
- Local champion (host country).
A total of 7 teams per edition.
Restructuring and new format (2025).
Starting in June 2025, FIFA will expand the tournament to 32 teams and hold it every four years, imitating the World Cup. The United States is hosting the first edition of this format, which began on June 14 and will end on July 13, 2025.
New classification criteria (2025–present)
For the 32 spots, the FIFA Council approved the following in February 2023:
- UEFA: 12 spots (4 Champions League winners from 2021–2024 + 8 based on the 2021–2024 UEFA club rankings).
- CONMEBOL: 6 spots (4 Libertadores champions 2021–2024 + 2 according to CONMEBOL ranking).
- AFC, CAF, and CONCACAF: 4 spots each (champions 2021–2024).
- OFC: 1 spot (highest ranked in the 2021–2024 OFC ranking).
- Host country: 1 spot.
A maximum of two teams per country applies, unless more than two win their continental tournament in the aforementioned period.

The possibility of holding this new format of the Club World Cup with 48 teams, the same as the next World Cup, and every two years instead of every four years as currently stipulated, is currently being evaluated.

Hoy quiero hablarles de otra de mis pasiones, el fútbol. No he hecho publicaciones al respecto anteriormente porque no he sabido cómo abordar el tema, pero hoy me estoy atreviendo porque, como dice el dicho, para todo hay una primera vez.
En esta ocasión vengo a hablarles del Mundial de Clubes de la FIFA, y les contaré sobre los origenes de la competición, los diferentes formatos que se han usado y del cambio mas reciente, con el nuevo formato con 32 clubes, que se está implementando a partir de este año.
Orígenes y antecedentes.
La primera versión del torneo tuvo lugar en enero de 2000 en Brasil, bajo el nombre de Campeonato Mundial de Clubes, reuniendo a ocho equipos campeones continentales en una sede única. Su precursor más directo fue la Copa Intercontinental que se celebró desde 1960 hasta 2004, la cual enfrentaba solo al campeón de la Liga de Campeones de Europa y al de la Copa Libertadores de América.
Formato inicial (2000), predecesora y fusión.
Como se mencionó anteriormente, entre los años 1960 y 2004 se celebró la Copa Intercontinental, que enfrentaba al campeon de la Liga de Campeones de Europa y al de la Copa Libertadores de América.
En el año 2000 se implementó el plan piloto del Campeonato Mundial de Clubes con 8 equipos, que eran los 6 campeones continentales más 2 invitados, y se jugaba con fase de grupos y fases de eliminación directa.
Ya para el año 2005 se decidió fusionar ambos torneos y se redundó como Copa Mundial de Clubes, con un formato de eliminación directa de siete equipos, jugado cada diciembre en Japón hasta 2008 y luego en Emiratos Árabes y Marruecos.
Frecuencia y participantes.
Entre 2005 y 2023 se jugó cada año y participaron:
- UEFA Champions League (campeón directo).
- Copa Libertadores (campeón directo).
- Campeones de AFC, CAF, CONCACAF y OFC.
- Campeón local (país sede).
Total de 7 equipos por edición.
Reestructuración y nuevo formato 2025.
A partir de junio de 2025 la FIFA amplia el torneo a 32 equipos y lo disputará cada cuatro años, imitando la Copa Mundial de selecciones. Estados Unidos es sede de la primera edición de este formato que se está realizando desde el 14 de junio y finalizará el 13 de julio de 2025.
Nuevos criterios de clasificación (2025–act.)
Para las 32 plazas, el consejo de la FIFA aprobó en febrero de 2023:
- UEFA: 12 cupos (4 campeones de Champions 2021–2024 + 8 según ranking de clubes UEFA 2021–2024).
- CONMEBOL: 6 cupos (4 campeones de Libertadores 2021–2024 + 2 según ranking CONMEBOL).
- AFC, CAF y CONCACAF: 4 cupos cada una (campeones 2021–2024).
- OFC: 1 cupo (mejor clasificado ranking OFC 2021–2024).
- País anfitrión: 1 cupo.
Se aplica un máximo de dos equipos por país salvo si más de dos ganan su torneo continental en el período citado.

Actualmente se está evaluando la posibilidad de realizar este nuevo formato de la Copa Mundial de Clubes con 48 equipos, igual que la próxima Copa Mundial de Selecciones y que sea realizado cada dos años, en lugar de cada cuatro años como está estipulado en este momento.
