THE GAME, THE TACTICS
In line with what I can call my tactical series – the last one being this XABI STYLE– left me visit another topic.
The Mid- Block
This is a defensive shape that takes effect around the midfield area. Meaning a team, out of possession, forms a compact pattern around the midfield area to resist the opposition. They don't drop deep before offering this opposition, that will be low-block.
Advantages
Restricts space: By forming a compact shape, the defending team is setup to restrict the amount of space available to the opposition to play in. Space is so important in football, so this makes it more difficult for the opposition to find gaps and create chances.
Reduces passing options: Sequel to the point above, this compact defensive mid-block system, also reduces passing options available to the opposition, which can force them into passing backwards, making mistakes or playing long, hopeful balls that are easier to defend against.
Counter-attacking opportunities: Now this is for the defending team. Sequel to number 2 above, turnovers can happen in midfield, and as such the defending team can create opportunities for counter-attacks, catching the opposition off-guard.
Conserving energy: Defending can be physically demanding if truth be told, particularly when chasing the ball around the pitch. The mid-block system is a rescue system to save energy, helping a team remain fresh even till latter parts of the game.
Frustrating the opposition: As a result of denying the opposition space and therefore opportunities, the compact defensive mid-block system can be frustrating for the opposition, and can lead to greater levels of mistakes by the oppsition plus it can even cause them to develop a loss of confidence.
