My Fear for Big Water Bodies.

Hello, everyone.

I welcome you to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learner's featured post. Growing up I always wanted to learn how to swim, and even though I did not know how to, I was very stubborn and would follow those who knew how to swim to the river or stream, and while they enjoyed the water, swimming from one end of the river or stream to the other, there would be me sitting in a corner or walking from one shallow end to the other, avoiding those deep parts because of the fear of drowning. My mom would always preach against going to the rivers and streams with friends, but I did not pay attention to any of that, as all I wanted was to learn how to swim.

We even sneak out of school just to go to the river but friends never wanted to teach me how to, they will tell you to follow them to the deep parts of the river and then leave you there saying when you have a life and death situation, you will learn to swim as that is how they learnt, they did it once and I did not really learn but I managed to survive and since then I stick to the shallow parts of the river and try to avoid big water bodies but that did not scare me enough until one time we sneaked out as usual and got to the river to meet a fellow student floating ontop of the river, he had drowned some rushed to call the school security while some dragged him out of the river, I saw that his eyes had turned white and his skin pale.

The sight of that sent shivers down my spine. We were accused of being the ones that drowned him, but he later regained consciousness and cleared our name, but the sight of what big water bodies can do stuck, and to date whenever I am close to big water bodies, I still see what I saw that day, and it makes me avoid big water bodies. I gave up learning to swim, as I did not want to have anything to do with big water bodies anymore. If the water is bigger than a basin or goes beyond my knee level, then I don't think I want to have anything to do with it, as I avoid it with every fiber in me.

Can I swim?

I think the story above answers the question. I cannot swim. Sometimes I feel ashamed that I cannot, but then I remember the incident, and I am proud that I cannot, as that way I am more careful around big water bodies and don't go around taking unnecessary risks that can result in me drowning. I have heard and seen stories of people who drowned, and some did not regain consciousness, and that was the end for them, and that only makes big water bodies even more scary.

If I Found Myself In A Big Water Body And Needed To Swim To Safety, Would I Survive? And what is stopping me from learning to swim?

Source

I don't think I will survive this one, as I cannot swim, so I think this ordeal might just add to the number of people who died by drowning. My fear of big water bodies is the only thing holding me back from learning to swim. As a child, I dreamt and pictured a life where I could swim, but along the line, things changed, and now I don't even want to have anything to do with big water bodies, and there is no other way I can learn to swim in a basin, so I think that dream will stay a dream.
