Sick Kids, Busy Days, and Recovery

Whew, what a week.

"But it's Monday!" you exclaim. Yeah, true enough, the weekend felt like a week itself though so just roll with it.

I've been meaning to get started with playing Knave Solo for four days now and between work and family there's always something new to take priority right now. Which isn't a complaint per-say, these things happen and I'm kind of glad I didn't get one round in only to have everything derail for a week. At least now I'll be able to pick up my plans from the beginning and churn out a bunch of solo gaming once everything settles down here a bit.

As a software developer within the company I work for, things are generally fairly straight forward. I pick up an item from the pile, I figure out how to do it, and I do it. Prior to being promoted to a developer, I did QA on this project for several years so I've got a pretty good idea how things fit together and it has made for a pretty easy switch into my dev role. Now and then though, I get a curveball - there are portions of our codebase that are a pile decade-old spaghetti-code mixed with stuff that was written five years ago in a hurry as we pushed to reach various deadlines, and it's just my luck that for the tail end of last week and the start of this week, I was working on an item that was just not fully thought out. I did manage to solve the issue I was having finally, but - as is so often the case - my issue that should have been maybe two days of work ended up being 5 and by the time I had figured out the solution I was forced to just get it working and make a note to un-fuck the situation later.

I bring this up because I am fortunate enough to have a full hour for lunch every day, which usually is when I pack in a lot of my writing, research, and (if time allows) gaming for my posts. Half of last week I was so focused on figuring out why my (obviously perfect) code wasn't working as expected, that I didn't even take lunch.

A lot of quick PB&J's were eaten this week while I cursed at Visual Studio's debugger for the 99,999,999th time.

As I mentioned though, I did solve the problem on Friday and was excited to head into a weekend with a mostly free schedule. Which is when my 5yo started coughing. A lot. And as a result of the coughing, not sleeping, and as a result of not sleeping, being grumpy. My relaxed weekend ended up being two kids feeding off each-other's bad moods and sickness to the point that by the time I had finally wrestled them into bed I had just enough mental capacity to turn on Baldur's Gate 3 and vegetate in front of my monitors.

Once again this has a silver lining in that I've been very excited and waiting to find a good time to dive into BG3 and it's been an absolute joy to play so far. I love it, and I'm finally reaching the point in my own surgery recovery that I can mostly-comfortably sit in a chair for a couple of hours at a time which is a big bonus right now. My prior surgery early last year, it was nearly 8 weeks before I could comfortably sit down and be in a car for any length of time, so things seem to be progressing a lot faster and I'm very thankful for that.

Currently, my 5yo is still coughing his lungs out. We took him to the doc and he's got a prescription now that should help him along so hopefully by Wednesday or Thursday things will have settled down enough at home and at work that I'll be able to get some more solo ttrpgs going! There are a few small one-shot games I'm really excited to talk about once I get the Knave stuff started.

Anyhow, that's it for me. I missed writing and since I don't have a focus, you get a ramble-blog about my life. That's how it goes some days. Until next time friends.

I don't have children yet, but I know exactly how parents reacted when my cousin started coughing or got sick. Or when my brother got sick when I was little. It's gonna be okay, man, I promise you that. Just do your best and it will be fine.

Oh yeah, it'll be fine. It's far from his first cold, it's just a minor interruption to the normal flow of the week. Poor guy is still coughing pretty hard this morning but is doing a lot better today than he was yesterday so I figure another day or two and he'll be back to his usual energy levels.

Exactly man, just some time and medicine will make him good. He is so young and energetic. He can start running around in 2 dayz XD
