IT IS NOT ABOUT LYRICS ANYMORE, ITS ABOUT A HOT BEAT AND A CATCHY HOOK
Music used to be like magic, when these artiste sings a song, we could relate to it, to the extent that it could help ease those trying to escape from depression.
The days of P square, 2pac, 2 face Idibia, brought life to the music industry. These are times when lyrical representation meant a lot when compared to the best they used for their music. Even though those days were not as developed as these days, the beat they used is still iconic and obviously never dies. Play a song from any of 2 face's album and you will see people vibing to the beat. 2 face Nfana Ibaga is an legendary song that I listen even till date.
The reign of Fella kuti, brought light to the music industry. The decrease in the lyrical value of music is not just happening in Nigeria but it's affecting the world at large.
Look back at those times when Eminem was at his prime, Jay Z, Nas, Biggie, when 2 pac was still alive, the times of Andre 3k, Michael Jackson and other people that gave life to hip-hop and made it go far and wide. Those were the times when gangsters were looking for ways to be normal people and lead a good life even as they are rappers. Conversely, in today's world, mumbling singers (I can't call them rappers) are looking for a way to become gangsters.
Reminiscing about the old days, and hoping to have it back, is like wanting Good Luck Jonathan to become the current president of Nigeria. Literally, as you can tell, it's impossible.
Honestly, in terms of music, I prefer to be stuck in the past, listen to these old songs that has reasonable and relatable lyrics and enjoy both the beat and the lyrics.
No cap, the songs of these days are quite interesting if you are a type that prefers beat over lyrics. But for me, I prefer lyrics over beat. Due to the rise of new artistes that care less about their lyrical presentation, I am forced to abandon these new songs and migrate to listening to foreign music.
Some see music as a way of vibing and letting go of some sweat through dancing, but I see music as a way of communicating with each other. There is a huge reason why Eminem will always be remembered. Michael Jackson, 2 pac and Biggie are still in our minds even though they have been long dead.
These were he people that brought out the real deal of music. Coincidentally, where I am seated and writing this post, somebody is playing, All eyes on me by 2 pac, whats funny? A passerby was singing it out loud, all eyes on me. No jokes.
For me, I see today's artiste as people who come into the music industry to milk it. Back then, these past musicians gave music life and fame, but today, the musicians we see today are in the industry just to make money and hopefully, leave the industry, thus, the rise of Akpi, Shalipopi, and the rest, even mumble rappers.
The mindset of reaping off of the music industry has resulted in low effort songs when the money start entering. At first, they sing good, but then, when they start hitting it, they beging to fade.
One thing that will aid rebuild the quality of music is if the mindset of these musicians change from reaping the music industry to adding immense value to the music industry. It's not just about singing, but it is about building people up, and helping people through your songs.
