WHAT IS LEADERSHIP AND WHO IS A LEADER?
You wish to know the meaning? Come with me...
Leading people is one of the most difficult tasks in life. I often tell people that leading a group of animals is, to some extent, easier than leading human beings. Why? Because humans come with different mindsets, backgrounds, and thought patterns. This diversity makes it more challenging to plan effectively and peacefully present an idea for acceptance and implementation.
Leadership requires patience, wisdom, technical knowledge, firmness, and boldness, especially in this 21st century, where the world often feels like it is spinning out of control. You’ll agree with me that leadership today goes far beyond just bearing the title of “leader.” We frequently hear people calling others “my leader, my leader,” perhaps because they are hoping to gain something from that person, showering them with praise for ulterior motives.
On the other hand, we see people fighting tooth and nail for positions in schools, offices, and organizations just to bear the name “leader.” Unfortunately, they forget that leadership is not about titles, but about influence, empathy, and adaptability, especially in our fast-changing world.
I always remind people that we are all leaders in our own unique ways and capacities. Some people lead quietly from the background and still achieve great results. Leadership is more practical than theoretical. These days, we see people attending endless leadership summits, which, although important, must be followed by action. After the summit and after receiving the certificate, what real impact do you make?
If you can bring forth an idea that impacts those around you, you are a leader. If you can extend a helping hand to someone in need, you are a leader. If you can bring peace where there is chaos, you are a leader. Doing these things defines leadership more than titles or frequent attendance at summits, especially in our troubled world today.
Now, I know you’re expecting my personal definition of leadership or who a leader is. Well, I might disappoint you here. I don’t have a rigid or specific definition. Since I believe strongly in a transformational leadership style mixed with a touch of situational leadership, I think leadership is about how you handle situations and find solutions in any circumstance. That moment when you take charge and resolve an issue, that’s when you become a leader. From that point, you can define leadership in your own terms, based on your experience.
So always remember, you are a leader in your own way. Don’t wait for a particular position or title. Show those leadership qualities, be patient in tough situations, solve problems, do things that benefit others, and lend a helping hand where needed. Above all, live by the golden rule. That’s the kind of leadership our world desperately needs today.
So, what is leadership and who is a leader?
