Traditional Music or Modern Music (AFRI-INLEO 53)
Source
What a sweet and thoughtful question, traditional or modern music. Dear friends, welcome to Afri-Inleo Initiative Week 53. I am pleased to participate in this week’s initiative.
Music is a beautiful creation that is pleasant and soothing to the ears. Its importance and impact cannot be overemphasized. We have different genres of music and various styles in which they are performed, but every kind of music, whether traditional or modern, has its specific purpose, meaning, and the right occasion where it fits best. That is why I would say I love both traditional and modern music, depending on the occasion.

Let’s start with traditional music. During events like traditional marriages, coronations of traditional rulers, community festivals, or new yam celebrations, there are specific kinds of music that are perfect for such occasions. You can't just play modern music, whether gospel or secular, at a traditional event. Yes, it is music, but it might not resonate well in that setting and its impact may be lost. Traditional music often carries deeper meaning, especially when it involves call and response patterns, with the talking drums leading and other instruments responding. In such settings, it creates a richer cultural experience.
Traditional music is also tied to our heritage, our roots, and the stories of our people. It speaks of where we come from and the values that hold us together as a community. Many traditional songs are composed with proverbs, wise sayings, and age-old advice that are passed from one generation to another. It is not just music, it is a tool of cultural preservation and education. Without traditional music, many of our cultural practices would lose their flavor and meaning.
On the other hand, modern music also plays an important role and makes more sense when used in the right setting. For example, you can't go to church on a Sunday and render traditional music, even if the message is good. In 99.9 percent of our church denominations, it may not be accepted, and if care is not taken, the singer and musicians might go back home suspended. Hahahahaha.
Furthermore, during a street music show organized by Gen Zs, traditional music might not be the right fit. The same goes for clubs, traditional music might kill the vibe and may not connect with the audience at all. Modern music brings excitement, energy, and a sense of trendiness, especially among the younger generation.
So, both traditional and modern music have their value and significance. It is wise for us to understand when and how to use them in order to fully enjoy and appreciate their essence. When used appropriately, music, whether old or new, has the power to unite, inspire, and transform lives.
