THE SOCIETY AND PROGRESS : THE THREE ENEMIES OF SOCIETAL DEVELOPMENT TO WATCH OUT FOR, IF WE MUST MAKE PROGRESS

Source

The biggest problem of any individual is not the problem itself, but the inability of the individual to KNOW and ACCEPT that he has a problem. As an ancient proverb suggests, "He who knows not and knows that he knows not is wise, but he who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool." Failure to recognize and accept one's problem often results in fighting the right battle with the wrong approach or tools. Hence, to achieve progress as a state or nation, it is crucial to identify the core enemies in our society and address them from the root.

What are these core enemies?

1️⃣ Political Sentiment: This refers to the excessive attachment to a political party, ideology, or leader, often at the expense of truth, justice, and the common good. It causes people to prioritize political loyalty over rational judgment.

2️⃣ Religious Sentiment: This is the emotional attachment to one’s religion or religious beliefs to the extent that it clouds reasoning, promotes intolerance, and fuels division, instead of fostering peace and unity.

3️⃣ Tribal Sentiment: This is the deep-seated loyalty and bias toward one’s ethnic group, which leads to discrimination, favoritism, and the inability to see beyond tribal affiliations when making decisions or forming opinions.

From my perspective, the three major threats to societal growth, peace, and sustainable development are the ones listed above. While Political and Religious Sentiments can be managed to some extent, Tribal Sentiment is particularly destructive.

No wonder De Philosopher DJ Kyos said, "Tribalism is more powerful and dangerous than any political party. People choose to follow and support someone, not because they are good as leaders or have good credibility, but because they are from the same tribe."

The alarming part about tribal sentiment is that 60% of those promoting it are the so-called "educated people." This has led me to understand why education categorizes some individuals as educated illiterates, and I prefer to refer to such people as "green illiterates."

I also resonate with the profound statement made by Dr. Chuba Okadigbo:
"If you are emotionally attached to your tribe, religion, or political leaning to the point that truth and justice become secondary considerations, your education and exposure are useless. If you cannot reason beyond petty sentiments, you are a liability."

In conclusion, dear friends, for us to achieve sustainable development, enjoy peace, and build a harmonious society or nation, we must eliminate political, religious, and most importantly, tribal sentiments from our minds. These three enemies of societal development fuel conflict, and no society or nation can thrive amidst constant conflict.

If we genuinely desire to create a better society and achieve global unity, we must be willing to set aside our tribal and nationalist loyalties and embrace our shared global identity. This shift will enable HUMANITY to STAND UPRIGHT.
