The Guy on the Road: A True Life Story of Distraction

My Picture

As I hurried to work, I noticed a guy standing on the road, scanning the horizon for a keke to take him to his destination. I was also looking for a ride, and luckily, I spotted one heading in the same direction as the guy. I flagged it down, and as I settled in, I tried to signal to the guy across the road to join us.

But despite the driver honking and the passenger calling out, he remained unaware. It was only when we looked closely that we understood why. He was completely absorbed in his phone, earpiece plugged in, and eyes fixed on the screen. We drove past him, leaving him still waiting.

This scene replayed in my mind long after I reached my destination. How often do we allow distractions like phones to take our attention away from what truly matters? In this case, his focus on the phone cost him a convenient ride after waiting for so long. But what if it had been something more important? A missed opportunity, a lost chance, or even a safety hazard?

Let us be mindful of our surroundings and use our phones wisely. A simple change in habits can make a big difference in our daily lives.
