SALARY NEGOTIATION

In life, we all need to engage in something to ensure our survival, take care of ourselves, and support others. Some venture into business, make their money, and spend it as they wish, while others take up white-collar or office jobs, either working for themselves, an organization, or the government. In all these, we have expectations regarding our earnings at the end of the day, week, or month, which brings us to the topic of salary and salary negotiation.

A salary is the payment a person receives for the services they render. In many cases, it should be equivalent to the workload and time spent on the job. It can be paid daily, weekly, or monthly, depending on the agreement between the employer and the employee.

We often hear people say during interviews, "I have a passion for this job; that’s why I applied." While passion is essential in any profession, I always emphasize that the benefits or earnings from the job serve as a major driving force behind our decisions. This means that salary expectations are just as important as passion.

Every passion needs a driving force (a motivational factor), and in this case, salary becomes the motivational factor that fuels the passion.

Take, for example, someone with a passion for teaching. If they work in a private school where they are either underpaid or owed salaries for three months, they may eventually leave the job. Passion alone cannot sustain them because they need a salary to survive and continue working.

For these reasons, salary negotiation is crucial before accepting any job offer. Given the current economic instability in our country, it is even more essential to discuss and agree on fair compensation. Below are a few key factors I consider when determining salary requirements:

Factors to Consider

🔸 Transportation Costs: The cost of commuting to and from the workplace should be factored in before accepting a salary.

🔸 Cost of Living: Consider expenses such as rent, healthcare, and other necessities.

🔸 Qualifications: An employee’s qualifications should be taken into account, which is why every organization should have a structured salary scale.

🔸 Workload: The workload and job timing must also be considered when determining fair compensation.

Salary negotiation is a vital step before starting any job, and being informed about these factors helps in making the right decision.
