MUSIC AND FASHION

Two powerful concepts coming together. Some people might ask if there is any relationship between music and fashion, and I will say yes because you feel the vibes of some music when you see the fashion or the dress code of the presenter. At times, seeing the dress code of the musician can easily give you a clue about the kind of music he or she will be performing. On the other hand, the vibes of watching a musical performance might be reduced depending on the dressing. Just imagine someone coming out in a full corporate dress with a tie to perform an Efik cultural dance. Ahahaha! That looks funny, right?

Before we delve into the connection, let's briefly touch on the concepts of music and fashion.

MUSIC

Music is an art form that involves the combination of sounds in a harmonious way that makes it pleasant to the ears. It expresses emotions, stories, and cultural identity.

FASHION

Fashion is a form of self-expression that involves clothing, accessories, hairstyles, and more. It reflects culture, trends, and personal identity.

THE CONNECTION

The relationship between music and fashion is visible in several areas, as mentioned below.

Source

🎵 Music as a trendsetter in fashion: Many music genres have influenced fashion styles. For example, seeing someone wearing oversized trousers, big t-shirts, and large chains around the neck will easily make you associate the person with hip-hop or rap artists.

🎵 Cultural attire and music: The appearance and dressing used in a performance can easily indicate the kind of music to be heard and the culture or tribe presenting it. For example, seeing people come out in a particular attire clearly shows that it is a traditional dance from the Efik or Ibibio culture.

🎵 Miming: Some of us can easily remember the fashion that comes to mind when we hear the song Master of the Universe. Back then, when we were much younger, this was one of the songs we used in the children's department for miming. The white flowing gown for girls and the white trousers and t-shirt for boys complemented the music well.

🎵 Reggae music and fashion: You can easily recognize someone who sings reggae music or identify a Rastaman just by looking at their dressing style and hairstyle.

CONCLUSION

Music and fashion are powerful forms of self-expression and cultural identification. They have a strong relationship and influence each other in many ways.
