I once stayed with a neighbor who never believed in anything birthday celebration, sometimes she even called it demonic.
One day, a friend invited me to a birthday party. As I was about to leave, I told her I might return late and asked that the gate not be locked. She asked where I was going, and I told her it was a friend’s birthday party.
She was very intentional about telling me why I should not go, saying it was not scriptural. I told her I wasn’t arguing with her, that it was not a debate, just my personal decision. She continued talking, and I listened respectfully because she was an elderly woman.
After all she said, I told her I had heard her, but she should hold on to her belief and let me hold on to mine. I reminded her that making personal decisions is not a debate.
