Sitting in my office, I heard the door being hit. I thought there was a fight or something, so I decided to check it out. When I got to the door next to my office, behold, my boss and assistant were outside while their properties were inside.

"What happened?" I asked.

"I left the office to get something outside, and on coming back, the door had locked itself. I can't open it from this side, and my stuff is inside," my boss responded.

It was a serious issue. We all tried to open the door, but every attempt failed. From applying force on the door to shaking the handle and so on, nothing worked. Since no welder was nearby, I decided to try something myself before we went searching for one, considering it was an iron door.

What I Did

If you have a screwdriver, it’s the best tool for the job, but since there was none available, I had to improvise with a sharp-pointed cutlass. I started by loosening the nut that held the handle of the door. It took me some time, but I finally did it.

I then placed the cutlass inside the little hole by the frame of the door and discovered that a part of the door engine, or cylinder as some people call it, had hooked inside the frame. Now that I knew the problem was the door cylinder, my job had a direction. While keeping the sharp-pointed end of the cutlass inside the frame hole, I applied more force, hit the door, and immediately, it opened.

I then proceeded to loosen the nuts that held the door engine/cylinder in place. Once I removed the cylinder, I asked my boss to get a new one since the old one was faulty. A new cylinder was purchased and replaced, and my boss was happy. No money was spent on a carpenter or welder, we only bought the cylinder and fixed it ourselves.

Sentado en mi despacho, oí que golpeaban la puerta. Pensé que había una pelea o algo así, así que decidí comprobarlo. Cuando llegué a la puerta de al lado de mi despacho, he aquí que mi jefe y mi ayudante estaban fuera mientras sus propiedades estaban dentro.

"¿Qué ha pasado?" pregunté.

"He salido del despacho para coger algo fuera y, al volver, la puerta se había cerrado sola. No puedo abrirla desde este lado, y mis cosas están dentro", respondió mi jefe.

El problema era grave. Todos intentamos abrir la puerta, pero todos los intentos fracasaron. Desde aplicar fuerza sobre la puerta hasta sacudir la manilla, etc., nada funcionaba. Como no había ningún soldador cerca, decidí intentar algo yo mismo antes de ir a buscar uno, teniendo en cuenta que era una puerta de hierro.

Lo que hice

Si tienes un destornillador, es la mejor herramienta para el trabajo, pero como no había ninguno disponible, tuve que improvisar con un alfanje de punta afilada. Empecé aflojando la tuerca que sujetaba el tirador de la puerta. Me llevó algún tiempo, pero finalmente lo conseguí.

Entonces coloqué el alfanje dentro del pequeño agujero que había junto al marco de la puerta y descubrí que una parte del motor de la puerta, o cilindro como lo llaman algunos, se había enganchado dentro del marco. Ahora que sabía que el problema era el cilindro de la puerta, mi trabajo tenía una dirección. Mientras mantenía el extremo afilado del alfanje dentro del agujero del marco, apliqué más fuerza, golpeé la puerta, e inmediatamente, se abrió.

Entonces procedí a aflojar las tuercas que sujetaban el motor/cilindro de la puerta. Una vez quitado el cilindro, le pedí a mi jefe que me consiguiera uno nuevo, ya que el antiguo estaba defectuoso. Se compró un cilindro nuevo y se sustituyó, y mi jefe quedó contento. No gastamos dinero en un carpintero o soldador, sólo compramos el cilindro y lo arreglamos nosotros mismos.
