Different human activities in our society today have caused a lot of harm to us. Activities such as burning fossil fuels, industrial emissions, and deforestation have released harmful substances into the atmosphere, leading to the depletion of the ozone layer. This, in turn, has caused an increase in heat and global warming. All these factors have affected our climate, leading to what we call climate change.

CLIMATE CHANGE is a shift in temperature and weather patterns in a particular geographical area. These shifts are mostly caused by human activities, as I earlier stated.

Climate change is mostly discussed in terms of rising temperatures and extreme weather events, but its health impact is sometimes overlooked. Below are some of the health impacts of climate change.

HEALTH IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

🗻 Mental health challenges – Climate change can lead to natural disasters like floods, and the aftermath of such disasters might leave victims traumatized.

🗻 Vector-borne diseases – Changes in temperature can expand the habitat of disease-carrying vectors, increasing the rate of infections.

🗻 Heat stroke – This occurs when the body's temperature rises above 40 degrees. Symptoms include rapid heartbeat, confusion, and loss of consciousness.

🗻 Dehydration – Excessive heat leads to excessive sweating, which causes dehydration. This can result in weakness, headaches, dizziness, and other health issues.

🗻 Heat rashes – This is a skin irritation caused by excessive heat and sweating, leading to itching and rashes.

SOLUTION / WAY FORWARD TO MITIGATE THE HEALTH IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

🗻 The government should strengthen the healthcare system to combat illnesses related to climate change.

🗻 Creating public awareness and educating people on the effects of climate change and how to mitigate them.

🗻 Embracing green energy to reduce fossil fuel burning.

🗻 Staying hydrated as much as possible.

🗻 Emergency preparedness and disaster response – Agencies responsible for handling emergencies should always be on standby.

🗻 Avoiding excessive exposure to heat.

In summary, climate change is not just an environmental crisis; it is the greatest health threat of our time. Its negative impact on human health and well-being goes beyond rising temperatures. We must all join hands together to combat it.
