27 MAY : CHILDREN'S DAY MEMORY
Source
Children's Day is a special day set aside to celebrate children, especially learners. Back in those days, it was one of the most fun-filled and sweetest days to experience as a child. You would wake up very early that morning with joy, planning how to go to the stadium. As a child then, you had to save up money ahead of time, knowing you would buy ice cream and biscuits.
Personally, I used to enjoy going to the stadium on that day. However, one part I never liked was participating in the march past. Even till today, that aspect does not appeal to me. So, I would usually go to the stadium wearing mufti instead of a school uniform like others.
I remember a particular Children's Day during my primary school days when I wore my school uniform. The reason was that I had been selected to march in front of the other students and swing a decorated stick. It turned out to be a bit fun that day.
When I got to secondary school, the experience changed. Teachers would often threaten to flog students who came to the stadium and refused to take part in the march past. I was always ready to receive that flogging because I never enjoyed marching. Some years, we were flogged when we returned to school, and on other occasions, we were spared.
As a student, Children's Day was always exciting, and we looked forward to it eagerly. But waking up this morning and remembering those memories without any feeling of wanting to go anywhere is something that makes me thankful for growth. It shows that as we grow, our interests change, and we develop a taste for new things while letting go of others. What was your children's day experience ?
To all the parents out there, dress your kids up, give them some money, and let them go to the stadium and have fun, because today is their day.
Happy Children's Day.
