CREATING CONTENT MAYBE A TOTAL WASTE OF MY TIME

Prior to 2024 I was a full time content creator on hive. That meant posting once or twice daily, coupled with hours of rapport with community members (off and on chain). Creating content on Hive was my only source of income, so there wasn't much of a choice in the matter. Fast forward to 2024, I moved to Europe for my academic pursuit, and it has been a struggle keeping up with a hobby I once loved so much.
Recently, creating content on Hive has neither been financially or socially rewarding. For instance, it takes roughly about 2 hours to write a decent post on hive, which, based on my current hourly wage, is around €30, that translates to about €60 worth of upvote. It is almost inconceivable to earn such an amount on Hive and to some extent unnecessary.
But you can do so in your free time?
My free time is unfortunately much more precious to me and parting with it means scarifying my rest and time with my wife and kids. I'm at a point where my finances are relatively okay, so I would rather opt not to write at all.
I would have been indifferent about the shortfall in financial compensated for blogging on Hive if the Blockchain was socially rewarding in terms of views and engagement but that isn't the case sadly. Most of my mutuals are inactive, and I have never really made out time to make new acquaintances (because I am slowly becoming a old dog that cannot be taught new tricks).
Despite all the shortcomings of Hive as a social platform, it is still my haven. A strange thing to say considering the number of weirdos we have here, but I do find it to be a safe space especially when compared to platforms like twitter/X.
So whenever I do have the time I try to scribble down a few things (before my kids interrupt). Writing is cathartic and I want to write more whenever I have the case.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE.
Whilst supporting a family of 4 which includes myself, two new borns, and a wife who is currently running a master degree, I hope to commence my pursuit for my second degree in computer science in the second quarter of 2026, and whilst I still have chunk of free time, I want to also delve back into content creation.
Now, the major challenge is deciding what type of content to post. I'm used to sharing more personal blog posts which accounts for most the content I have shared over the years, but I will like to tone that down and post less about myself as possible.
So for 2026, I will be attempting to creating content about fitness, books, and learning German. I also have a dedicated page where I talk about my fatherhood journey.
This will be my last attempt at content creation. If this doesn't gain traction (outside Hive), I will focus all my energy towards getting my second degree and masters. Fingers crossed.
You can still teach an old dog new tricks! 😂 If you can learn German in such a short time, which isn't an easy language, then you can learn much more! 😂 I'd love to read about your books and learning German! P.S. I saw you bought a ticket for Spain. 💪☺️
For my sake I hope so 🤣
🤞🏿
Coming with the wife and kids. Our first vacation in 2 years. Looking forward to it.
Yes! I'm looking forward to meeting your family ;) Happy New Year, and see you soon 😉
Good luck with learning german! It’s not a super simple language to learn
I know right. I've been learning sluggishly but consistently for the past 2 years and I am still at A2 level
This is why low cost of living is one very important type of freedom. I guess you can see why I’ve never seen hive as an income source but rather a source of extra investment and new friends.
Compared to the cost of living in Tokyo as well, it’s never really been “worth” my time except because of the community I could build and the things I could learn here, those made it worth it.
Now I’m a bit burned out but still here, just way less active than before, which was honestly way too much. 2-6 hours a day is unsustainable unless the minimum wage is less than $5 an hour where you live.
Yes, I agree. However, now, I can buy into hive. That something I was not able to do before now, and I prefer that in some way.
Honestly, there are days when I want to write something but opt to sleep instead because it is far more rewarding. This post is probably going to earn me about €1. I could easily make that by picking four cans of red bull on the road and recycling it in less than 30minutes 🤣
Interesting blog. What do we want from Hive? If it is income, these are hard times with the coin so low in price. If it is in social networking, well then making a few good 'friends' might be enough.
In my case, I sort of sail along no matter the value of the coin. It has always been about creating content and getting feedback. It is the content creation that is rewarding for me. In this case, the value of the coin is almost immaterial (of course, I would love the value to rise and see a fat number in my wallet. That I would leave to my children, who are already grown, even middle aged).
I wish you well on your German journey. I hope you are in the country. It is so much easier to pick up that language if it is all around you and you have to use it to live. I learned it in school and had a great time, but achieving fluency in that environment is very, very difficult.
Here's wishing you a productive and fulfilling New Year...you and your family.
In the short-run, the money doesn't matter because I am actually buying hive and getting a decent ROI. I would love to see more activity esp in the social sphere which will make creating content more enjoyable.
Actually, I am in a German speaking country and I will really love to integrate. I love the people and place. This is why I am making more effort to learn German
Thank you very much. This is the first time I am seeing this account. I will stop by your page 🙃
I would use Hive for thought meanderings when you need to write, maybe the fatherhood journey. For learning German and fitness you might want to find some kind of short content platform. If it picks us then paste the pieces together and publish a book. Enjoying your life and wife and kids is priority then something better than content is created.
What do you do for a living in Austria?
