AN OPEN LETTER TO NIGERIANS ON HIVE
People illustrations by Storyset
Before I go into the details of this post, I will ask for a favour: kindly tag as many Nigerians on Hive as possible in the comment section of this post. I want to reach as many people as possible.
Also if you don’t enjoy reading as much as you enjoy posting, kindly view this post on peaked and listen to the audio version. This information is important, especially for the new Nigerians on the Hive blockchain.
Who should read this post?
If you are a Nigerian on Hive this post concerns you. If you're a Nigerian creator on Hive that is getting little to no exposure or upvote, you have to read this post. If you an OG in the space and you want to help your community in any capacity you should read this post as well.
So for those of you who do not know I am, my name is Nonso. I am a content creator on Hive. I have been on this blockchain since 2018. There are very few Nigerians on this platform who have been here this long, so there is probably something I am doing right (I guess)
Kindly vote for the hivenaija author of the week here
I know Nigerians love a good success story so I would share mine. In 2020, I made my first million (naira) on Hive. In 2021 I bought my first car courtesy Hive. Even in a bearish market like the one we are currently having, I have made a million naira. I am not trying to brag because these accomplishments are so insignificant when compared to the successes of other Nigerians in this space. I am telling you this, so you know it is very possible to achieve your financial goal by creating content about the things you care about and also supporting the hive ecosystem.
There are quite a number of Nigerians on Hive. We are probably the 3rd-4th largest community on Hive. Behind most successful communities on Hive are active Nigerian members. However, there isnt much to show for it. Most Nigerian creators are struggling, they probably do not have the right orientation about Hive and this is the problem I hope to solve, hence my journey as a community leader.
I do hate the term ‘leader’ because puts me on a pedestal. Rather than being called a leader I consider myself a community guide. I am here to provide you with relevant information and tips on how to go about your hive journey. So many Nigerians have benefited from my knowledge and have gone on to achieve amazing things on the chain even surpassing me in stake. So there is an 80% chance that if you listen to me you would end up a millionaire (in naira) by the next bull market. So here is what I have to tell you: Hivenaija is the community for you.
The thing about the Nigerian community is that we do not have structure, hence there are many individual successes and no collective successes. The issue with this is that we cannot propagate wealth or even our knowledge in our community and that makes whatever success we achieve individually unsustainable and limit our influence on the chain. It also makes our individual journey as we struggle to find support in other communities.
The reality is most Nigerians would rather support thriving communities than theirs because, at the end of the day, it is all about personal interest (to them). This is how many of us were raised, we cannot see the world past our purview, hence the sorry state of our nation which indirectly or directly impacts our lives. So individualism is a cancer in the long-run.
For instance, last week I was competing for 100,000 Hivepower delegations for the hivenaija community and it was just unfortunate that some Nigerians were trying to sabotage that by cheating and spying on my group. This is the delegation that would benefit more than 10 persons, including the persons cheating and not even me because I dont upvote my post with community stake. I can casually earn 2-3 dollars doing that but I don’t because I believe I can make that elsewhere. So these are the issues I want to address.
I understand it is tough out there and many people are just in survival mode. However, we can have a different approach to things that is sustainable and can propagate even after we leave this space. This is the legacy I want to leave on Hive and I want to invite everyone who this message resonates with to join the Hivenaija community.
There is so much the Hivenaija community has in the pipeline for Nigerians, but we need the numbers; we need people to participate in the building process. The reality is that this community is going to grow. I am working on a few partnerships. @deraaa (our current community leader) is doing amazingly well in trying to organise our community and also sourcing for new opportunities. So please do not miss out because in the long or short run, it is far more profitable to be active in this community than posting randomly and hoping for upvotes or visibility.
New entrants are coming into this space, so it is important that you take position and leverage the opportunities that already exist. In the next 6 months, the narrative would change and I won’t be the one asking you to join or participate so why not do that now? Engage in our weekly prompts. I plan to bring back the live sessions again by July. If we play our cards right we can be one of the strongest communities on Hive.
If this message resonates with you kindly reblog and tag other Nigerians in this space. Thank you.
If you have questions or suggestions, kindly leave them in the comment section.

I have been actually waiting for your post ever since I saw you comment on Jose’s post some time ago, you said you will be dropping something relating to us soon and boom I found this on your blog, I am happy I found this post first I guess, my first encounter with you is something I will never forget, you actually made me understand something on my first day on leothreads and thanks to that piece of advice, I was able to do a bit better, thanks…
Actually I have been a long term member of the hive naija community and always participating in weekly prompts, won several rewards and followed the curation trail because I believe hive naija is actually doing its best to keep the community and its members growing and I truly commend that effort but i literally went off for a while and completely neglected the community but now I am back fully and to be honest I really concur to everything you said in this post and I am willing to be amongst those who will help the community grow and now the prodigal son is back once again, with my very best effort I will do my best to keep the community growing…
Thanks for this enlightening post, it was really helpful…
Thanks man I'm glad you shared this on the tag's.
🔥❤️❤️
Thank you very much for supporting in your own way. Even I fell off at some point. The bear market is taking a toll on many people however, I still believe there is a lot we can do to support each other in our little way. So thank you once more.

Thank you. You are not doing badly yourself. Let's support the each other. We have the numbers. There is so much we can achieve here if we really put in the work.
I agree bro. weldone
You got me Boss, you have the leadership spirit... I learnt and realized that while we were on threads.
I believe we can do it and even better if we just have a few who are bent on moving this community forward.
I'd recommend a rebrand for the old ways of growing the community and a place we all connect as Nigerians to move things forward.
Maybe I'll come to your dm for an idea or two that I may have 🙂
Sure. I am open to ideas and suggestions. Anything to move things forward.

Daalu ooo, Nonso. I will join in again if the community wants to move and I hope it won't be another abandoned project.
As long as I am here I will keep pushing. Na Una support I need. If we grow it benefits everyone. I really do want to see more Nigerians do better in this space
This is cool stuff Nonso, I have been admiring the Venezuelan and Indian communities for what that going on for them on Hive, I think Nigeria can do the same and even better without sounding like it is a completion.
The world out there has caused us to act in ways as our leaders do, sabotage, dubious with conniving ways, it will do our best interest to act transparently, after all, we are on a transparent blockchain, so there are rewards directly or indirectly for genuine actions.
As some know, I am a Nigerian but not residing in Nigerisn so am up for supporting the #hivenaija community.
I know and I see what you are doing. The things is if we have structure we can grow our influence on the chain which is the most important thing. I just hope more people key into this
And thank you for stopping by. We appreciate your support directly or indirectly
@cool08, @tozill, @debbyrose, @fexonice, @treasuree
you need to see this.
seen thanks for the tag
Oga Nonso. Well done sir.
It's a pity that this sis coming at such a time even though it is not totally bad.
Some of the things I wish that can be addressed first is that when everyone in the community are treated equally, then you will likely have received the support needed elsewhere. I feel that you came up with this idea because you felt some fellows who ought to be your kinsmen and support you did not do so.
I have been in the #hivenaija community for quite a while and have received little or no support whatsoever. The slogan ought to be have been Brother Helping Brother but the reverse has been the case
However, with this new uprising, I wish the status quo would change so that the support needed to thrive would come alive.
I wish that all Nigerians would come together and form the synergy that is needed to forge ahead.
I understand where you are coming from and you are right. We ought to support each other. I do so in my little way. There are many things I do in the background that most people don't know and I don't sing my praise.
However, I will also like to come from the angle not of not just thinking about what they community can do for you but what you can do for the community. For instance, I earn nothing from doing this. Absolutely nothing. After working here, I still have to support other projects I belong to. It is not an easy feat. However, I believe if we can grow the community to the point where it is support everyone who contributes meaningfully then we should. We should play the long game.
I see the vision and I hope I am selling it to everyone who has read this post. There is so much we can do. But we need to grow first
I am already in from the moment I read your post. It's just that some of us still feel that those Nigerians who have made it real big here are not supportive enough.
I have seen Pakistanis and other nations, like the Americans, help each other grow very fast and earn enough to make them want to belong to that community.
No body want to be in a place where they are not making any profitable progress.
Well, if that's what Nigerians are looking for then I don't think I can help them. My upvote would barely get anyone dollar. And I don't think there is any Nigerian on hive who can give you 1 dollar if he or she upvotes you. So this narrative about Nigerians not helping other Nigerians is false. There are very few people here that can say they've not benefited from my influence directly or indirectly.
Also lets think more about what we can do individually and collectively to help and not worry about what other people are not doing. If i was thinking that way i probably would not be here trying to rally people together. I benefit little to nothing from doing this but i do it anyways because i want to help in my little way.
@jhymie @whitneyalexx @fashtioluwa @seunruth @dianelson @ayomike come check this out

I'm always ready and willing to support the community in whichever ways I can.
You are doing well Funshee. I see the effort. Let's keep pushing. Many might not appreciate it now but in due time I believe we will reap the fruit of our labour.

Daalụ. I just viewed the post. Hehe
You are welcome Nne. I dey try rally my people.
You are doing well bro
More grease to your elbow
Hey Nonso, I never knew you are one of the HiveNaija community leader, so good that I read this today. Almost all the issues you mentioned in your post resonate with me. Though I am new to Hive, I have experience in leading in the capacity that you operating now. The Nigerian problem of individualism is like Cancer that has eaten deeper into the fiber of the root of the heart.
While on read.cash blogging site, I tried to do something to help Nigerian writers on the platform by creating a WhatsApp group where we can collaborate, share links and support each other. I didn't do that for myself because I was already a top writer on the platform making something really good. But, the Nigerian individualism problem would not allow the group to function as planned, hence I stopped pushing my ideas to the people and allowed them do as they want. The rest is history.
I have never posted into the HiveNaija community once though I joined the community on my first day on Hive. I think I made an enquiry post in the community but not even a single person responded to me. Since then I never take a second look into the community.
I am so much inspired by your success story here, and as a goal chaser myself, I hope to have a great success story for my Hive journey in the near future. I will start posting into the community from now on, and I hope the leaders would not be wearing of my presence.
Thank you for calling out on your fellow country-men, God bless you richly.
Well Done, Bro.
I know how things work when you are involved and I'm looking forward to how this adventure will unfold. I believe there will be more follow-up updates to this.
I will be on the lookout for that.
As far as our words and action align, everything will go well.
Thank you bro. I want to give this community thing another shot again. We were doing fine but the bear market kinda ruined things and most of our best hands have left. But there is still potential in this space.
I see the potentials too because I've tasted best of both (bull & bear) experience.
Thanks for taking up this Community project, again.
@airhawk-project @kayceefresh @topworlds @botefarm @airhawk-exchange
Honestly, this is great..
The fact is I'm also to be blame because I haven't participated much in the hivenaija and that ends today. I want to be part of the success story and make things work. Though I don't know much naija people here probably that why I haven't been carried along that much.. But na here we dey and we go make sure say we rule this place.. Thanks for the post and encouragement.. You aren't just a community guide.. You are a leader too
Also thanks to @merit.ahama for tagging me..
@rare-gem
Well done for all the messages you have passed across. You have done your best to at least bring some Nigerians who are here on hive together. I was once coming to this community during the weekend engagement program, if I may tag it with that word. You have made a lot of being here on hive as you have said and even some who you brought in have somehow moved ahead. This is truly a good testimony to give.
After all that you have said, I found the fault from those who have gained a lot here on hive that called themselves Nigerians.
- biased: You people only focus on yourselves and the friends you have here, leaving other Nigerians behind. I have seen most posts here that have no or limited upvotes, while those who have more reputations kept having votes just because of friendship.
Life is not about being bias, but about working together to achieve better results. We always run to other communities just because of the love they showed us. We run to other communities just because of the way they treat us. They treat us just like the way they treat others, but not biased, just like the Nigerians.
Supports: I posted on a community which, I can't remember, and what they said shocked me. “Hey, it seems you are not from our country. You should try other contents related community. Thank you”. After all being said, I still received upvotes anyway, but their member's posts do receive upvotes, no matter how the content is.
Most community do support those from their country, mostly. They can never do without working together. Look at the Dutch and the likes. Nigerians failed to support each other when they had the power to do so. It is not just happening here on hive but also in reality.
Hive is now ”man-know-man”. I go support you if you be my friend. This, I think, is the slogan.
It is so simple to teach someone, and simpler to make the person understand what he or she is being taught. I graduated from steemit to hive and I saw what the Nigerians did to their fellow Nigerians. They were ready to support steemians from other countries, ignoring their brothers. This also floated to hive. I have tried so many communities, but hivenaija community is the worst I have even seen when it comes to supporting others.
Please, what I said up there is my mind and ”if I no talk am, my mouth go smell and e go die with me”.
Most people right here have one or two things to say, but are not free to speak their minds.
I'm sorry if what I said up there is annoying, but that was my mind, OOO...
It is good to build a community where there is support and unison, but worse to build a community where there is no support from even the one who built it.
A community cannot stand without people, and even the owner cannot even manage it himself. We are Naija and we hope for a better future in this community only if cooperation.
We stand as one Naija and hopefully, we shall take this community to a greater height if and only if things do not turn out to be flop.
Mr.Cool, thank you for your submission. I appreciated the time and effort you put into your feedback. However I have a few question to ask:
You've been on this platform since 2017, long before I joined, have you taken up any community initiative?
Now when you say those who have made it do not support others, my assumption is that you think that this is their responsibility and this is where I do not agree. No one can lay calm to another's success. Some of these people you mentioned worked their way from the bottom without anyone's help, hence they owe no one anything. If you admire their success and want to replicate, you either reach out to them or learn from what they do
In my post I appeal to everyone who needs some form of agency or representation on the blockchain. I highlighted what the benefits are...now if that resonates with anyone they can join or support. Joining hive naija isn't compulsory. I and the other mods are volunteers. We are not being paid to do this work. We are all playing the long term game because we know the value of a strong community
With Hive Naija we are more concerned about building a healthy community which we can leverage. Upvotes are nice but we are aiming for something better. There are also initiatives for those those who want to earn. The issue is we are not going to upvote someone's post because they are Nigerian. They have to engage and put in the work.
I know a few times I have curated your content in the past both on hivenaija and proofofbrain based on the quality of your content. So it quite unfair to say the community or even other Nigerians don't support other Nigerians. Most of these people do not even have the vote weight to give you the supposed upvote you think they should give.
Let's be the change we want to see. The universe has its way of rewarding those who are steadfast. I am a testament to this fact. I am an individual just like you trying to rally my fellow countrymen and women. I am not earning from it. If I can do so I believe you can as well.
I have truly being here for so long now but without support. I quit just because steemit packed up and taking the shape of hive, brought me back. Came back here 2021 and was struggling to meet up. I don't have the power to build up something like this. You have acquired a lot and I have not. So, there is a great difference between us, you know.
Anyways, we be naija and up we go. I'm here and here to make the newbies grow.
I only spoke my mind...you know. Let's just stand to bring others together as together we shall move.
I can tell you, I admire your courage.....
Thank you for this input Mr. Cool. But I would Like to point out that we have hardly seen your engagement. If we are going to talk about support, we should practice what we preach. And back to what Nonso said, we believe in lending a hand. None of the MODs are doing this worm for anything. We do it because we genuinely love the community. At some point, people move on and new people come. It doesn't mean we are biased.
We truly appreciate your input.
I was once coming around but seeing the way things are here, I decided to leave.
But, please, it's my views I just pinpointed. At least one needs to say his mind mo matter what. I'm not like those who kept quiet even when they are dying. So, erring my views was the best instead of letting my mouth closed.
If we don't speak up, it will keep burning in us. So, I think this has been said and @nonsowrites has clarified things.
We are one here and so shall we, ok?
I wasn't tagged though but still find this post and had to check out most of the comment here but your comment actually need some reply maybe to just clear you on some certain things since you said you join this platform since steemit days.
if truly you have been active and you know what most people that stayed this long faced, you will know at some point we all have to focus on ourselves, backed in the days there are up to 5-7 Nigerians top members who received delegations to support the nigerian community but they only focus on themselves and friends while they left those majority of us behind, if you arent doing something for them or if they dont know you well enough, then you are on your own to the extend of them report most of we newbies, so we had to learn how to find our way around, they lost the delegation though and 80% of them left, leave few who have learnt the hard way. So those with reputations receiving votes isnt because of friendship, it is because they know their way around by been active on the platform and also putting their effort into what pay them more (if I can put it that way), we nigerians are much but we never have a strong community based on some certain reason (which complain and not able to make certain sacrifice) is part of them.
You have spoken so eloquently @valchiz, building one's self consciousness right here is the best, but one cannot do it alone.
We have so many Nigerians who have gotten frustrated and could not cope just because of one issues or the other.
I have purged out my mind previously.
We will have a stronger force if and only if they are aware of this update. Moving from one community to other is just because of what they offer us, and so those out there kept on moving to where it would favor them.
I think we shall call them home together.
Hey, man. I agree with how you feel about everything you have seen on Hive. Surely, it isn't a pleasant thing to not feel supported and encouraged, which in your case would mean getting votes and attention. And it's even harder when you see your fellow people doing well, and then you just feel like you're doing something wrong. I understand that.
I would like for you to reason with me from a different perspective that is just as insightful as yours.
You see, all that you have talked about is mainly a reflection of what we are trying to solve. And because you felt it needed solving, you thought to speak your mind. I personally appreciate that.
What you would like, just like many of us here, is to be supported, recognized, and appreciated. And as you have implied, that's much more easily achieved if we can all find a way to work in symphony. That's why this humble letter is "open" for everyone: so they can see things in a new light and think in a direction that's in unison for the growth of our home, this community.
I assure you that the other communities that are thriving started just like us: confused, without structure, without support, and without active members. It's the people who choose to take it within themselves to make a difference in any little way that build it up to the taste of community you seek.
The little difference can come in many forms: engagement, contribution by posting, delegations, Discord server activities, and the like. And then someday, somehow, you'll look back and see the community flourish—looking like the ones you admire now.
If you put yourself in the shoes of the community guides, you sure would be discouraged by the energy you have shown. It's difficult to want to continue as a leader when people just lash out right away when you start something.
You have spoken your mind, and that's fine. But then, "it is a dangerous thing to mistake speaking without thought for speaking the truth."
You can do a lot to help the community grow by lending a hand in the most convenient way you can, not by discouraging people. I hope you consider this just as I have considered yours.
Haaayyyy.....my man, you have spoken so well. I got all you have said and I'm ready to be part of this unique community. Discouraging other naijas would be dar from it.
I know that engagement matters most in any community and so I will always do my best to engage more just like the way I do to other communities and even more since it concern my brothers.
Thanks a lot....
Nothing good comes easy I guess.. thanks @deraaa, I've really been seeing a lot you do in the organisation
I appreciate your mission most of the Nigerians I know were tagged already. But I didn't sawa @peterale.

Thanks for the tag @deraaa and Welldone, keeping the fort.
Thank you Guide @nonsowrites.
If only Nigerians can come together and make this community grow but some prefer to struggle somewhere else.
Because behind every successful community on hive Nigerians are the most active users there but they just choose to ignore their own people
Let's be the change we want to see. If we all were individually looking out for each other irrespective of our stake size we all would be in a better position.
You are absolutely right

This is beautiful. I believe that together we can grow our communities and help other Hive members do better with their blog.
I'm sorry about the HP issue. I'm only just hearing of it. Hopefully, this post will help other Nigerians see the need for a collective effort.
Thanks for the tag @johnuko
