Reflecting on Education: Past and Present Disparities

Being a student back in the day, I could vividly remember how we usually do recitation on the assembly grounds every morning. Each student will be given a passage to study or even a story to memorize, then come to the assembly ground and face the entire group of students and teachers to give the presentation. The thing is that right from that early period, this recitation exercise starts building one for public speaking. You will start developing those skills where you can memorize something and overcome stage fright. These are the advantages of those recitations, and the good part of them is that students speak from their own experience as well. However, I am not sure if this recitation program is still in existence in today's education, especially in public schools in my country, where so many things are dead already.

In terms of sports and competition, I remember experiencing inter-school competition. Different schools in the same locality go for different competitions; it could be sports, it could be quizzes, it could be debates. People discover their talents at that stage through these activities. Some people can play football, some sprint, volleyball, basketball, etc. But now, it has been discovered that most schools do not even have space for such activities anymore. They just build schools—no play ground—but focus primarily on profits, and it becomes difficult for students in such schools to develop those skills at that stage. These are things I feel should be put in place in our today's educational institutions, just as they were back in the day.

One thing that was bad about being a student back in the day, but students now enjoy it.

Before, there was no computer in the curriculum, and even when it came, it was like drawing a computer on the board. So that exposure to computer knowledge was not there back in the day, and a lot of things change all the time. Most things that were in the curriculum back then are even outdated right now, so the fact that schools are including computer education now is a very positive development that students enjoy currently, as having access to the internet makes their work and research easier. No longer traveling to the state or federal library in search of information. That basic background it gives students from primary school to secondary school makes them have that basic computer knowledge. If you notice, the era we are in is the communication age. Many things are done through the computer, AI, and the rest. So the introduction of computers in the curriculum presently is a welcome development and is something that I wish was there then.

What could be done about the disparities?

Bringing those activities I mentioned above back to the school will be beneficial to present-day scholars. In terms of sports, debates, recitation, quizzes, and all that, I think the government should come in to make sure that they don't approve any school without having a play ground where students can play football and other sports activities. These should be the basic requirements for any school to be approved. I think the government should play that part in trying to bring back those activities that can no longer be found in most schools today. For the computer aspect, nothing can be done in terms of disparity; it's gone already, so I think schools should ensure that there's a well-equipped computer room in each school and be sure that each student practically has access to it for improved learning.

Inter school competition was the real deal then, he it’s sports, debate or whatever. The spirit of together and all the fun was a really great experience.

Now school is just all about books and boring stuff for some students.😂 Some schools only care about making money so they don’t even think of organising some of these activities to hype the kids up.

And when you see some schools that still does all that, they will make parents to pay separately for it but then, I don't hesitate paying for my kids to participate because I know how important extra curricular activities is even though the school will make it optional. Back then, my parents didn't pay for me to participate in those activities but here we are today.. everything money money, well as far as knowledge is guaranteed, haha 😂

They say all work and no play makes jack a dull boy, there are some times the brain need rest and to ease stress, the extracurricular activities are needed and the likes of sport, debate, quiz are part of making student relax the brain which i believe when there is improvement there, schooling would be fun

The standard of education goes so low on a daily basis, imagine most difficult finds it difficult to do recitation rather they play till they play no more.

I hope they can use the available resources to improve on themselves

Those recitation was a drill that helped sharpened my brain. Whenever I return from school, I will forget about playing and grab my story to read and memorize

Integrating the past and present dimension of school would go along way to bring all rounder transformation in the educational system.

ICT presently has metamorphosed educational system to learning at your comfort zone.

And we need that kind of transformation I our present day school. The now government should go back and pick those vital things that will make education flourish even more better

Many activities has been lost from school with time. Somewhere good some were bad. But one thing is very bad now because School became a business institution in the current time focus less on study and focus more on business. People are opening school just by taking some room. It's very bad happening here now.

Yea... you can hardly find schools that are so intentional towards nurturing the students with other skills aside education and when u see...it comes with a huge price but it's fine provided the students will learn from it

Those things then use to build our public speaking and confidence.
There was healthy competition.
If they can be brought back, it will help.

You've spoken well on this subject matter and I also remember the recitation days ,it's always a great way to improve our communication skills and facing public confidence, such is hardly in place again.

But in this general the advent of technology have changed a lot of things and students now have access to internet to research and do things swiftly.

Yes...is hardly in place anymore
I agree that tech has changed alot of things but bringing back some old things that worked well is also nice

hmm another post the mentions recitation. I don't get this haha is it something you guys do in your country? I never had to do that. I can see how it helps but I think the same thing can be done through presentations and at least there it can be more natural.

If anything um i only remember having to do the pledge of allegiance which is something most elementary schools did at the beginning of class. Not sure if they still do it anymore though.

Hahaha, many schools back then embraced recitation and it did help students build up their public speaking skills..not only that, going back home, it made us always wanting to memorize pages of our books for recitation.. indirectly, we are learning along

Yea, replacing it with presentation sounds good and I have seen some secondary schools, doing that. Private school though

I see. I'm not too sure that is as effective now with the newer generations as their attention span even lower. Personally, I don't really like memorizing. Recitation made you want to study more? That's an interesting one. I feel like I would be put off by it.

Things have really changed. We have come to a generation that students are not ready to learn anymore. Every one will just go the Google and ask questions. God have mercy on us.
Thanks for sharing

I remember, how we use to play school inter house sports then. Honestly alot has really changed o. The computer era is a good innovation to the educational system. And if they can follow everything you said here the system will be okay.

You too played interhouse sport? That was a nice experience from that side I had
Yes..if only all students will be given access to computer, then it will be great

The students of today are truly enjoying, every piece of information they need is at their fingertips.

I have also noticed those schools with limited space for extra curriculum need to do better. Those physical activities are as important to the kids as much as the class room activities.

Yea... students today have infos available for them at ease...all they need is to apply effort
Yea, physical activities are important for students..only if most of our school owners should put that into consideration
Thanks so much for visiting

You post brings back memory for me. How I was the best student back then but denied the opportunity of going for a Shell competition. Instead they took the 5th best student because his father is a king 😂😅... He did win the competition with his father's influence of course but as God may have it, before the scholarship for the junior secondary school education came, he was already in SS2. That was how he missed the opportunity 😂.

Thank you #dreemport for letting me see this story that took me down memory lane 😂.
