Our Pediatric Clinic Visit: Reviews, Recommendations, and My Son’s Journey

Two weeks ago, I visited a pediatric neurologist with my child in a teaching hospital outside the state where I reside. This visit came with a recommendation since we have done several neuro clinics here in Lagos for over 4 years without tangible results. Hopefully, we will see positive changes going forward.

Mothers' sacrifices, I can say, are unlimited. We go to any length to see that our kids are fine. It was many hours of a trip to see this recommended neurologist, but I didn't mind all the discomfort, and I didn't mind the money involved; whatever sacrifice to see that my son's health improves has been my driving force. Good enough. I always have my family and friends giving me all kinds of support to see that I pull through the whole situation, and that alone reminds me that indeed, I am NOT alone!

When a health challenge is brain-related, it's usually not funny; it's been overwhelming and energy-draining, sometimes frustrating with emotional trauma, but I can only trust the healing process with faith in God and with a positive mindset.

After lots of review during the visit, MRI of the brain, EEG, and others, the consultant had to change his routine drugs for the start, and also for now, he restricted him from screen time, be it TV, phones, etc. My son is ten years old at the moment.You may agree with me that kids under his age don't joke with TVs and games via the phone, even though there should always be a limit to everything when it comes to screen time with the kids.

This new reality is already something I know will not be too easy for me to deal with, and so the consultant advised that I get him things he likes that can keep him busy during the day.

My son has already been a music lover right from age 4. He can use things at home to disguise as a complete set of musical drums and be drumming, and the same with piano and guitar. This made me enroll him in the music club in his school, but never bought his own music gadgets until now that I thought of what I can use to distract him from the screen at home, as such exposure triggers the brain health challenge more often recently.

For instance, we were on admission last week in the hospital, and during the midnight hour, he picked up my phone to watch cartoons against my instructions when I stepped out. It wasn't up to 5 minutes until the cartoon was on, and he started screaming, "My head, my head!" You see?

I had to visit a kids' store and got a kids' guitar, piano, and toys, at least to start with.

So far, all these tools have been keeping him away from the screen. Sometimes, he still wants to join his siblings during their screen time, but to keep things balanced, I reduced his siblings' screen time almost to zero. It's more all of them engaging in other kinds of play aside from games on the phones and cartoons. After all, it's not too good for healthy kids to expose themselves to screens that much.

There are many processes and procedures to his healing, according to the new pediatric neurologist we met. On my end, I will diligently follow it up, keeping to all medical instructions while praying for God's divine healing over my child as well.
