The new champions league format has lost it's attraction.
The old champions league was epic.
Every year you had the biggest and best clubs in Europe fighting it out for one of the biggest trophies in the world.
You had the best players in the world on show for Madrid, Barcelona, Man United, Milans all going head to head in must win games.
The tight little groups of four meant that almost every match was must win and if you lost your first game you were in serious trouble.
There were 32 teams in 8 groups with 16 making it to the knockout rounds where the real fun started.
Two legs, home and away with monster clashes on tv every single game week.
It was great to watch and the matches were hard fought for the most part and tight to call.
It was a real honor to win the trophy and there were no easy games.
The European honor roll goes:
- Real Madrid 15
- AC Milan 7
- Bayern Munich 6
- Liverpool 6
- Barcelona 5
- Ajax 4
- Inter Milan 3
- Man United 3
- Juventus 2
- Benfica 2
New format.
Under the new format this is unlikely to change very much as the same top teams are more than likely still going to be the teams in the last four again this year.
All that has really changes is that Eufa have added more shite teams as cannon fodder for the big European clubs.
With the new format they have also added another 50 games to the intial phase of the competition.
It has also removed the home and away group games which made the competition so good when team met twice.
Now it's a random draw for matches and everybody plays a different set of teams with most matches meaningless since 24 teams make it to the next round and you can predict them on match day 1.

Even now there are no surprises at the top of the table and very few near the bottom but i'm sure the rankings will reflect that at the end of the round.
They don't even show most of the games on our tv anymore and the ones that they do I don't bother watching. It's just not that important of a game if teams can rest their biggest players going into it.
I know that when we get to the last 16 teams it will be better and we will see the usual suspects involved but this new format just wastes all of our time until we get to that stage where we used to have top quality games and fierce competition.
Most weeks I don't even know who is playing and I don't even care. The coverage has dropped off and the profile gone way down form when it was one of the biggest sporting event during the week.
Overall Eufa is making more money form more matches and more TV money but for me it's not as good as it used to be.

I have to admit that I do like the format introduced last year. Nothing will change for the top teams but there suddenly is an option for the lower ranked teams to qualify for the next round.
Also last seasons some of the top teams had to fight until the last second of the last game to even qualify for the next round.
I do have a subscription to a sports channel. I could see all the games. Literally all of them.
The top teams are always going to be there for the last eight so nothing really changes other than a lot more minnows getting into the competition.
At least if your enjoying the format there are a lot more games to see.
I agree, the new format is a mess, a whole ranking but with teams that don't play each other
I have to say I like the new format with all teams in one table. The format reminds me a bit about the NFL regular season.
