New Champions league format - Last round.

After what could be called a slow and uninspiring group stage to the new champions league format we are in the last round of the group stages and finally have something exciting to play for.

After weeks and weeks of play nearly all of the teams are still in with a chance to reach the next round with 24 of the 36 teams getting though to the next round in the expanded format.

Some people might call this a money grab.

Those people would be right.

It's just a way of getting more matches out of the top teams and more tv money from the advertisers.

A lot of the teams down the bottom of the table have no business in a champions league and their haul of <5 points after seven games says it all.

There were some heavy defeats handed out along the way and a sever lack of big fixtures over these seven weeks. Last week there was one game worth watching. At least this time there are a few more.

Celtic V Villa is my game of choice as Celtic are always worth a watch with their fast paced kamikaze football highly entertaining.

There are a few other games worth watching with Man City, PSG and a few others needing to win to be safe. It's all bunched very tightly around the middle of the table with 21 teams within 6 points of each other.

A lot to play for as some teams will just try to qualify while others will be trying to avoid extra games and qualify straight into the last 16.

If this match day is anything to compare with the old last round of the champions league we will see a lot of action, goals and cards across the board.

I'm betting on it.

Across the 18 games that's -

  • Over 3.5 goals.
  • Over 10 corners.
  • Over 4.5 cards per game.

At 28/1 it's a long shot. I think there will be a lot of goals. Corners is hard to win but cards can be hit with a few reds across the board.

It should be a live bet to the very end which is the best kind of bet.
