Transparency vs. Tranquility: Should Citizens Know Everything?
There’s nothing that can be fully hidden on the surface of this earth and we all know that. No matter how something is hidden, it wound one day come out in the public and I can’t assure that it would be a good things. That is what we always preach that always speak the truth because the truth shall set you free. From where I come from, we all know ourselves. I say this because African leaders are known for being incompetent to some extent.
Obviously, there are somethings that should not be made public by a government of every country. But, growing up in Ghana, I have seen instances where very private documents were being made public by God knows who. Just yesterday, I saw a document online which was from the Norwegian government being addressed to a particular office in the Ghanaian government but it found its way to the general public someway somehow. The worst part of it is that the Ghanaian government is not even really concerned that such a document has found its way to the public domain.
Growing up, I used to watch 7pm news with my family every blessed day but if it was to be announced on the news that I would be arrested today, trust me I wouldn’t know about it until my friends who are active on social media come to tell me. If they don’t ,that’s how I would be arrested. The good part of all this is that, I no more need to sit and watch news because whatever is going to be said on the news at 7pm would have been on Ghanaian Twitter space by 1pm the same day. I’m not really a fan of social media but anytime something is trending, I trust that Twitter will have some news for me. That’s Ghana for you.
Ghana is so democratic to the extent that people can even go on social media to insult a whole president without being sanctioned. Also, even though we have the right to know what’s going on in our country every minute that passes by, some things are meant to be private and only within the government. But, you know we always have that one person that can’t keep their mouth shut. So, even if something was discussed in a particular government office and is meant to be private, someone would mistakenly spill the beans and that’s how come the whole Ghana will find out about it.
I think it’s actually better that we know whatever is happening in our country public because with the shege we have seen over the past few years, there’s no way we can trust the government to keep things away from us because who knows when they would decide to sell us all for their own personal gains. If we had competent and trustworthy leaders, maybe we would be okay with being in the dark when it comes to some stuff but with this government, it’s a no no!
Sometimes it’s really not about the information being put out there, it’s about our leaders and how much we trust them. Currently, I believe that it is in the best interest of every Ghanaian to make everything happening in our country public so as to prepare ahead and act accordingly.

Certain Information should be public which enables the citizens to know whatever is happening in the country they reside but then not all information about the government should be public, some are better off left secret.
You’re right
Why is Ghana sounding so much like my dear country Nigeria 😂😂
But I strongly feel that the public doesn't have to know about everything happening in the country.
We are neighbors so we have so much in common.😂😂
But can the government keep a secret?
Right 😂😂
That's the thing, and we both know the answer 😅
As much as we have the right as citizens to know what's going on our country, we still don't need to know everything.
You’re very right, but our governments don’t even know how to keep a secret anymore.😂
You have said something very poignant here --- and that’s the only best part in the article – “the truth will sset you free”
I can’t comment on Government stuff kept private or public because we are always used to Government secrescy. It’s a long topic.
In India for writing truth about Govt. and discussing things there was fear of percecusion.
So, I hardly wrote much on political topics but I did write few, taking the risk of getting defamed, targeted, trolled but not many read my articles so nothing of that kind happens.
So, its amazing your Govt has cool attitude on this
In my country we still don’t know how Govt. manages finances, and corruption cases. And hidden hands of Govt. nexus behind stock market crash and they obtaining secret funding blackmailing companies…
It’s very grim and black…
0 transperancy, lots of fake news in main stream and I don’t watch those news so I am not brainwashed, and those brainwashed people call us anti nationals.
Well…long story… I don’t have sympathy with Govt or film stars having privacy unless they are good people.
But bad people fooling people that they are competent and good…na…no mercy… give details, tell the truth…
Some gossip will be there yaar… its how masses are…anyway…
There are too mant skeletons in the cubboards of our politicians, involves misuse of public money and commiting atrocities… No mercy I have on these guys right to privacy… the Govt. is accountable to people, they rule us without connecting without respecting that people right to get good governace and all that…
It’s really sad to hear about the situation in your country. I hope that the youth is able to call the government out for the better because you all deserve to at least know what is going on in your country.
Thanks for passing by.
Arey... its a big story... but most of the population were brain washed by Govt. propaganda and lies. But a section of independent journalism survived in digital domain - youtube and website and Govt. could not curb that.
THese journalists were threathened often for reporting truth, women get rape threats and murders... trolled and raids at home and some journalists were put in jail too... still they survived.
Web2 helped in funding ...
And people like me... are branded as anti national, terrorists for talking facts about Govt. but I don't have much people I talk too so it was less but I too got abused by friend who did not like me critizing Govt.
Ultimately, though things are not gone worst because that Govt. which is doing all this, is very weak now, opposition is now strong to question them. So, I and the journalists and citizens are free to write facts and analyse Govt. critically but we all feared expressing our opininon on social media.
It's good I don't have much friends because I would have had it difficult with the brain washed lot... good thing is the unbrainwashed lot got closer, we share news articles, discuss stuff and have fun...and that will continue ..
But India is one of the most dangerous place for women and journalists of late. Still, they survive... anyway... I am actually supposed to go journalistic way, but could not go because I am cowardly by nature, but even so, inside me the writer, and story teller, and passionate journalist spirit flames, I can't live without good quality news stories... and I try my best to only read news stories that are facual, good quality. GOt plenty of brave independent journalists doing that now...
In reality we are not born free, there are practical things you can;t do...because of Government and society being one way. Anyway
It’s one thing to get abused by power up there in the bigger offices but your friend? That’s extreme.
I honestly thought India was a safe place but reading this, I’m scared for everyone there. I pray for safety for everyone out there and I hope things get better for you all.
