Should Medical Checkups Be Made Compulsory?

If we were to arrest people for not going for medical checkups, almost 90 percent of Ghanaians would be in jail. Why because we don’t pay much attention to our physical and mental health. In Ghana, once you’re not extremely sick and lying in bed, you’re okay going about your daily life as usual.

Growing up, my family had a personal doctor and with this, we were required to go for medical checkups all the time, mostly every month . This was to make sure that everyone of us is in good health with no illness whatsoever. On days when one of us was sick in bed, we’d have the doctor come in and diagnose us. Health they say is wealth. As humans, we are all bound to fall sick once in a while throughout our stay on earth. On most days, we are healthy and well and are able to go about our daily activities and on other days, we can’t even get ourselves out of bed. That’s just how life works.

As individuals, we are always being advised to take good care of our health by engaging in healthy activities which include eating balanced diets , engaging in physical activities , practicing meditation and many more. All these acts are expected to keep us in shape, however, we also need to go for medical check ups regularly because anything can go wrong even though we are trying our best to keep fit.

With the rate at which most Ghanaians fail to go for medical checkups, i would totally agree with the idea of making medical checkups mandatory for citizens. This way, we’d drastically reduce the high rate of admissions in our hospitals on the daily basis. On most days, the hospitals are always choked with cases which could have been avoided by a simple medical checkup. I’m sure citizens would totally not reject this idea because it’s for our own good. If there’s a reason why citizens will reject this idea, then it would have to be related to the high cost of the taxes to paid. I for one didn’t like going to the hospital at some point in my life because of the high medical costs but I eventually had to start going for check ups because my health was at risk at some point in time and I couldn’t keep on not wanting to visit the hospital.

For an average citizen, having to pay so much for medical costs might be a problem but once the cost is subsidized, everyone would be good to go. Health is important, and it is very important that our government put the health of the people in mind and work towards achieving a healthy community. I believe mandatory checkups in todays era is the way to go. But to make this a success, a lot must be invested into making it a sustainable and efficient project which can stand the test of time.
