Reality TV: Freedom of Entertainment or Social Responsibility?

On the other side, the one thing I haven’t still been able to wrap my heart around for so many years now is the concept of reality shows. I mean, everyone has their niche and what they love to watch but that has never really been my kind of thing. This isn’t to say that I haven’t seen some reality shows, I have followed some of them from the very beginning both local and international but what I found weird about each of them is me losing interest in it along the line for millions of reasons.
Now, what are reality shows? They are unscripted shows and dive into the real life experiences of people. It can range from a variety of things depending on what the producers want to focus on. For some, it’s music, fashion, food, relationships or just drama. And most people today, especially ladies seem to live the drama part of such shows. I remember when big brother Naija in Nigeria a Date rush in Ghana started streaming. You should see how the general public rushed for the show because there was a lot to unwrap every blessed minute, especially on big brother naija.
And to think that people actually could spend their whole day watching other people go about their day making money is out of the world. Some projects barely eat because they are just glued to their screens following every move. I’m totally not against these shows but I believe a reduction in the raw at which they are aired would do as more good. Also, if the producers could tone down on the context of these shows, that would be an icing on the cake. Why do I say this? It’s because these days, parents hardly have time for Tv. It’s always the kids that are always watching television and these shows are aired there.
The kind of content our kids consume these days isn’t healthy for them at all and even as adults, some of us don’t consume such content. Imagine walking in on your kid watching big brother Naija where people are doing all sorts of things you could think of. What they see is what they act on. The next thing you know, your child is fighting with people or even worse.

I understand that all these shows are business as usual for the producers. But let’s also remember our kid at home and the kind of future we want for them. We all want a better world and to achieve that, we mis walk the steps to it. Money can still be made if we don’t sexualize or make everything about violence and drama. If you ask me, good content does seep faster than bad content even though we are made to believe it hardly happens.
The world must be better and it must start with us.
