Perfect Babies: Scientific Miracle or Ethical Nightmare?

There are a lot of things we don’t get to decide in our lives as individuals. Like the family you’re born into or who your parents are. But also, there are so many things you can decide in your life such as who you become and what you do with what you have so as to be a better person.

As I always say, life is simple but we always find ways to complicate things for ourselves. Being a parent is one thing post people dream of in their lives. Wanting to meet someone you love and making a vow to spend the rest of your life with them, starting a family and raising your beautiful kids to be the best they could ever be. I mean, it’s all fulfilling and beautiful.

If there’s one thing I’ve never seen before, it’s parents saying they don’t want their kids because they lack this or that or they could have had this or that trait but they don’t. Since I’ve been born, my parents have always loved me just the way that I am. I get that I can be stubborn sometimes but they have never gotten up one day and day oh, today we are going to throw you in the bin because you don’t have superpowers and we wanted a kid with superpowers.

No one is perfect and parents know that the most. Being able to have a kid itself is a blessing not everyone is lucky to experience. For most parents, just having their kids alive and with them today is more than enough for them. They don’t really care about modifying their kids to have some particular gifts , talents or whatever. They just let them be who they are and groom them to be respectable people in future.

Speaking of parents modifying the genes of their kids so they could have special traits and all of that. I don’t think it’s really ethical because what if this child is born and he says he never chose to have these superpowers being given to him? To me, it’s more like already deciding the child course of life before he is even born. Recently, I saw a series, Gen V - where parents inject their kids with a V vaccine which gave them powers. At the end of the day, some of these parents had a lot to deal with because of this decision of theirs. Some lost their lives because these kids didn’t even know what to do with those powers while others kids hated their parents for giving them something to make them superhuman when all they’ve ever wanted was just a normal life.

You’d probably be coming at me from the angle of preventing congenital defects and what have you. Let you stop you right there. As someone in the health field , I can tell you that there are a million and one things a pregnant woman is advised to do and not do so as to give birth to a healthy kid. For most of these issues, the mother may have had some habits which led to that or it was just bound to happen.

So, this action wouldn’t really be justifiable on all fronts for me. Let these kids live, grow and decide who they want to be. They can still manipulate their genes when they are older and then, we’d know they did it on their own accord.

Children are beautiful gifts from the lord, why would anyone even reject one for any reason? But then, some actually treat some like they are no human being. I have seen, and I have been told; and most time, it gets me wondering.

Thank God you know you're stubborn 😂 but, you're still very much loved. Though it's good to reach an age to decide on one's genetic modifications however, some errors are best prevented before birth. I hope you understand the contexts of genetic sampling and selection. Thank you for sharing.

That’s true. But if there’s no such situation, i don’t think there’s a need to mess with a kids genes.

I don't have children yet, but the only thing I ask is that they be healthy. As for having perfect children with superpowers and gifts, in the future they may feel the weight of these abilities and ask their parents why they made them that way. With great power comes great responsibility.
