Not Every Shade Needs Sunlight

I just got off a two hours call with a very close friend of mine. Something happened today which I was a bit mad about and so I called to discuss it with my friend. The whole thing is that, I had a discussion with someone today about something. We laughed about it and we went about our day.

I got back home from work at around 7pm, picked my phone and went to whatsapp. The next thing I’m seeing is this persons status lowkey throwing shades at me. Well, that post might totally be unrelated to me but it was centered on the discussion we had. And so the typical me just concluded it was a shade. I found it be very childish and petty and when I told my friend about it, he also said the same thing.

But he told me something else and it was the fact I might have reacted to that post. The point being that, even if the person was trying to type shades that would mean they wanted a reaction. On a normal day, I would have confronted them and just get it off my chest. But then I took it to my friend. Regardless, I still reacted in a way and now, I’ve learnt that not everything requires my reaction.

This led so a series of discussions about so many thing in this life. I for one always stand on business and what’s right. But sometimes, people wouldn’t always agree with me because everyone is entitled to their opinion. If there’s one thing that my friend said to me that stuck with me, it’s the fact that life is about balance. As much as I feel I’m right about something and need to be heard, I also need to be able to listen to others and reason with them the same way I want them do with me.

This isn’t something most of us practice. We say we stand for this and that, but do we actually try to see things from different perspectives? Do we put ourselves in others shoes? I doubt we do.
Today, I leave you with this little piece of advice- don’t always be defensive about everything, hear people out, see things from their perspectives and give them some grace. This way, we can all create a balance in this life.
