Life, Loss, and the Long Walk to Meaning

Over the past year, I’ve lost so many people in my life and that go me thinking a lot. Earlier this year, I happened to just get back from my grandfather’s funeral only to be told I had lost a very good friend of mine to a car accident. I didn’t know what to think because it felt like people were dying every blessed day and some of these people were people I knew on a personal level.

At my friend’s funeral, one of our friends suddenly asked us what the purpose of life was if we were all eventually going to die and be forgotten at some point. The reply that was given to this friend of mine by another friend has actually stuck with me till today. He said, ‘the fact that we know that we are going to die one day doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do anything with our lives. Unfortunately, some of us will die young and others will live king enough to see their great grand kids. If you decide that you won’t do anything because you will eventually die, you might and will one day look back and realise you wasted your life away for the fear of death.’

This got me thinking, everything we do in this life has its meaning. Us being alive today living this day isn’t a coincidence, it was meant to happen. Believe it or not, we all have a role to play in this world be it good or bad. Good people exist because of bad people and vice versa. And at the end of the day, we all will fulfil our purpose on this earth before leaving. For sometime, you might not really know what your purpose is on this earth. It takes a lot of self discovery and learning to really know what you want to do in the life and from there, you need to put in the work to achieve it all. I know what I want from this life and I have reasons to push further for it and do better. I have siblings, family, friends and even strangers who lookup to me, hoping I will be great person in future. And I also know I have people watching my every move, waiting for me to fall. This is actually something to be proud about because at least, there’s people out there who believe in you enough to know that you can fail, but just not yet.

A lot of things keep me going on the daily. Getting to where I am today isn’t just from by hard work. It’s been God, my family and my friends support that has kept me going this far. There were days I didn’t wish to wake up, but I thought to myself, did I fight so hard just to give up at this point? Obviously not. Things might not always go as planned but if there’s one thing I’ve learnt from life, it’s the fact that once there is life, there’s always hope.

Things will turn out well, you will fail, but so will you rise. Just keep the fire burning.

Even though it hurts that one day we will leave everything we have laboured for, i think, leaving something behind to be celebrated for is something to be proud of.

There is a reason for our existing, it's not even about chasing material things alone. It's not about amassing wealth or making names for ourselves, I think it's about the impact we have made in the lives of people and that alone is a reason to keep pushing the through the struggle.

You’re right. Your wealth wouldn’t really matter if you haven’t been able to impact the lives of others.

So sorry for the lost of your friend. Life sometimes can be really stressful and makes you think if it's really worth it. But despite everything we won't give up, we will keep moving

I believe in the saying as long as there is life then there is hope. Like we sleep snd hope to wake up the next without knowing our next purpose or where we will end

That’s very true. Just leave everything to God and do your best.

This is so true, the fact that we all will die at some point which we do not know doesn't mean we should limit ourselves 'because what is the use of living life and then dying at some point', I promise if you limit yourself from living life to the fullest, you yourself won't be proud of the life you lived at your later age.

Thank you for sharing this, and sorry about your loss, may you be comforted.
