Hope, Accountability, and a New Year

Some years ago, the economy in Ghana was nothing to write home about because our government then was hell bent on finishing us off. Inflation was at its highest, the cedi- dollar rate was shocking , taxes here and there and citizens were really suffering. As for our leaders, they were basking in riches with their families.

Thanks for clarity, Ghanaians finally saw the light and voting a different government into power and since then, I’d say Ghana is doing a lot better because our leaders are serving us well. The cedi is standing at a good rate compared to the dollar, inflation is at its lowest, fuel prices have dropped and all unnecessary taxes such as covid tax and the others have been scraped off.

We the citizens of the country are seeing the change but given how bad our economy was before this new government took over, it will take about a year or two before we can actually say that the country is in a very good standing and that would determine on how far the government is willing to go for us. But so far, it’s been getting better by each passing day. However, there’s actually one thing that I believe isn’t getting better.

You see, business is business. And every businesses goal is to make some profit- fair point. But then, imagine the government making sure that businesses are able to buy goods at affordable prices and expect them to sell them at reasonable prices to the people but then they don’t. Prices of most stuff are still the same at retail prices even with all the reduction in prices. Food is still expensive and the value is still the same.

Our farmers are selling their produce to traders are low prices yet foodstuffs are still expensive. Now, do we blame the government? Partly, yes. But i would say the main problem has to do with us. One thing about some Ghanaians is that they always want to be pushed before they do something and this is where I think the government needs to come in.

Instead of assuming the people are sensible enough to reduces the prices of goods to be reasonable given the fact that they are getting them at lower price, the government needs to actually set laws and rules with regards to some of these stuff. There should be a stable price in the market for some goods and even if there should be variations, it shouldn’t be much. We can’t keep doing this to ourselves and expect the government to do better when we aren’t doing better for ourselves. But then again, if the people aren’t helping, then I think the government needs to shove them into the right direction. And this right here is what I expect from the Ghanaian government this year.

In Nigeria, the market decides the price, no regulation whatsoever and the poor people suffer.

I agree that the government should regulate prices of basic food items.

It’ll never make sense to me how people are quick to increase prices but take years to reduce them. I think the government should start having a standard price for things like how they used to advertise the price of kalyppo and tin tomatoes so that before going to a shop to buy it, you already know how much you have to pay.
