First Aid Basics: More Important Than You Think

Back in basic school, my school had the Red Cross society. Now don’t get me wrong, a lot of school had it but the old me then wouldn’t have joined but something did make me join. If you know about Red Cross you’d remember those small books they had where people donated to the cause. I joined for the money- if you know what I mean - I’m sorry if you can’t relate.😂

But aside the money, I learnt a lot more in the club. The one thing Red Cross teaches very well is first aid treatment and that was my first encounter with first aid. It wasn’t a big deal to me then but I still learnt it. It was good to have the knowledge and also the money on the side so why now. This knowledge of first aid carried me till I got to senior high and university. One time, I think I was in junior high, my dad got electrocuted by naked wire in the house and my first aid skill came to play plus a little bit of my African trait. He survived thought.😅

When I got to the higher level in school, I decided to go into the science field, specifically the health sector. I’ve actually learnt a lot from all these steps I have taken. At a point, I somehow forgot about fist aid because I didn’t have much use of it but once again, we were taught in school and made to practice. In my field, first aid is an everyday things and i get to apply it all the time. Also, it’s very useful to me because you never know when you or someone might need help.

First aid treatment is very crucial in our everyday life today with the way people are crazy out there. First aid isn’t only about bandages and CPR as many people think. It goes beyond that-I’ve seen situations where someone needs first aid treatment and the person is just moved about instead of being put in the right position while waiting for the medics. Others too just toss the victim into a car and take them to the hospitals. By the time they arrive the victim would have lost his life or even sustained some complications.

Most of these deaths and health complications arise not from the accident but from the lack of proper first aid treatment. When it comes to giving first aid treatment, we need to all understand that those few minutes are very critical to the individuals well being and we have to treat it as such. Most of us out there still need training on basic first aid skills and so let’s try to get those skill. It’s free in most places and thanks to the internet, we can’t learn anything we want with ease.

There’s nothing like to much knowledge so let’s seek knowledge on the daily basis for our own sake.
