Electricity Supply: A Shared Struggle, Different Stories

Electricity as we all know has grown to become an integral part of our lives today as individuals. Gone were the days when we had to resort to kerosine lamps and candles as our source of electricity but thanks to development today, we have electricity which serves us so many purposes today.

I use electricity a lot in my daily life as I need to use my bulb as my source of light, charge my gadgets and also use my fan, and other stuff I have at home. I bet other people have more use for electricity on a normal day than I do and all this proves the importance of electricity in our world today. However, every country has its issues and for some countries, their major problem is electricity supply. My country Ghana has had its share of problems with our electricity supply and that was a few years ago. I think it should be about 6-7 years ago and then, I was back in high school then. It wasn’t easy for everyone because we literally had a time table in our country for electricity supply.

Each community would have electricity for about 12 hours and then they turn it off for another 12 hours so another community can have 12 hours of electricity. This went on for about a year until everything came back to normal. This is to not say we don’t have power outages anymore, we do but it happens once in a while. Now, the current governments main goal is to work on providing us with constant electricity supply and they have dedicated this year to work on that agenda and it’s going pretty well.

I have heart of big brothers in Nigeria complain of their electricity shortages in some part of the country and with my little experience from Ghana,I totally understand how frustrating it can be. Nigeria is a very big country which a huge population. This means that the government needs to put in extra work to ensure there’s constant supply of power to the citizens. We in Ghana are having a constant supply of power on the daily basis but that comes at a cost. The price of electricity has skyrocketed over the past years. Our meters have been changed with the coming in of every government and that means extra cost.

To some extent we can’t complain because in as much as it costs us quite a lot to have power, we need it and so we have no choice but to pay for it. I’m the future, I hope that the governments goal to provide us with constant power at a lower cost turns out great.

I totally agree with you in the aspect of we can't complain about the outrageous electricity bills because we need it for our daily use. Nigeria government are not the owner of electricity. They are part of it but, it belongs to a private company now. Thanks for sharing.

Private companies work for profit and so it makes sense that Nigeria is struggling with power supply.
Hopefully things get better
