Aunties, Family Gatherings, and the Marriage Conversation

It’s no news that we all have that one auntie who is always asking us when we will get married at any given opportunity. Well, it will interest you to know that I have more than one of such aunties. Quite recently, I visited my family to spend sometime with them. I don’t know one of my aunties will pay us a surprise visit.

But hey, she did. And it wasn’t even two hours in when she started talking about how busy I’ve been with my life and how she’s waiting to see the man I’ll bring home. I just looked at her and told her there’s more to marriage than men. This alone was enough to keep her off my back throughout her two days visit. Recently, everyone is getting married. We all complain of how there’s no money in the system yet every Sunday, over 50 people end up married in this country. I thought we were all broke? Apparently it was just me.😂

Marriage as we all know is a great union. Everyone deserves to experience the joy of marriage and also having someone to call their own. However, marriage shouldn’t always be the center of our lives. Gone were the days when our great grand mothers and mothers were told their lives were nothing without marriage. Today, women are empowered, we have goals to achieve in life and big things to do. Let’s not center our entire lives around marriage because once you do that and the marriage goes south, you’d lose your entire life.

I wish to get married, but at the right time. There’s no day I will feel pressured to get married because of an Aunty who doesn’t give me a dime or yearn to get married because all my friends are getting married. What we need to understand is that life is about time. Everyones time will come. I probably am not destined to get married this month, but maybe in the next two weeks or months I would be happily married. This is why I always tell people who try to tell me to marry that it’s better to marry late and marry right than marry early and marry wrong. It’s all a matter of time.
