Are We All Record-Breaking Wannabes?

Imagine being named as the tallest man on earth or even the richest person in a particular continent and having your name in the Guinness book of records. Great right?

Now, from these two titles, the tallest person on earth didn’t have to do any work to be given this title, they got it just from being who they are. But for the richest man in a particular continent, you’d have worked your whole life to get to be given that particular title. Some people will think that life is not fair but I like to believe that is just life and how it works.

The Guinness world record has been in existence way before I was born and there have been a lot of individuals having their names in that book for who they are or what they do. We didn’t have individuals breaking records every single day over the years until last year. I’d like to believe that Africans got to have a fair idea about how the Guinness world records work when Hilda Baci from Nigeria decided to hop on a cook-a-thon, cooking for 93 hours.

Since then, we haven’t had rest in Africa as everyday that passes by has something new for us. Between the time Hilda Baci broke the Guinness world record for the longest cooking hours to today, we have had over 7 people if I’m right trying to break this same record. And the funny thing is she didn’t even get to hold this record for even half a year. Sad right? Now, we have Faila who ended her 240 hours cook-a-thon just last week and now waiting for a response from GWR.

I bet someone is also out there making preparations to cook for 300 hours or even the whole year. Looking at how Africans in particular have taken this prestigious initiative into a something else , I’m sure we will have a lot more people trying to break non-existent records this year. All the ones we have seen so far are just warm ups, the worst is yet to come.

Breaking a Guinness world record is a great achievement to any individual who actually earned it from his or her hardwork but now it seems anyone can get up one day and just decide to break a record cos they just feel like it. Maybe I should also do a sleep-a-thon for the longest sleeping hours in history. Sigh. Just last week I saw a flier of someone trying to break a GWR by sewing for a number of days and I’m like really? I don’t even know what to think about this whole thing anymore because now we see anything around us as a record to break.

I don’t know if that’s just our nature as human or we are just constantly trying to hate on others and not be happy that they’re winning because why would someone hold a GWR for just a few days and someone will already be out there trying to break the same record. At least give them a break to celebrate their victory. I think with the way this thing is going, the Guinness work records team would have to go on a break or give Africa it’s own GWR book cos I know that this isn’t going to stop anytime soon.😂

I don’t know what the future holds for us all but I hope that people actually start to see the importance of the GWR and not see it as just a game they can decide to play anytime they feel bored.
