Food Wastage? - What I Do
One major thing that I am sure most people are trying to find solution to at a time when there is a high rise in the cost of commodities, especially food, is how to spend less and save more.
As a wife and mother, who is always tasked with meal planning and preparation, this is what I am faced with every single day and week. It is not easy spending my energy thinking of how to get the best deals with the limited resources available for feeding my family, so that means I have to look for ways to ensure that my efforts are not allowed to waste.
When it comes to shopping, I normally prefer buying things in bulk as I am able to get some discounts on certain items. Particularly, buying fruits and vegetables in bulk when they are in season is what I love to do.
Recently, however, I am slowing down on buying more than I can use at a time because of the issue of preservation and storage. This is mainly because of irregular power supply in my part of the world, making it difficult/impossible to use refrigerators and freezers for storing and preserving food items for long periods of time.
Recently, I have been thinking of buying a dehydrator so as to be able to dry some vegetables and store for later use, but I am not yet ready for the financial implications of that. Moreover, a dehydrator runs on electricity and the erratic power supply over here is also a concern.
The cheapest alternative would therefore be to sun-dry, and that can only be possible during the dry season when the rains are gone.
At the moment, I buy my groceries a little at a time to reduce the risk of food spoilage and reduce food wastage, since the options I would have explored for food preservation are not possible for now, but certainly will be in the nearest future.
