Three Challenges Of Choosing Career Paths for Students

Introduction

Choosing a career path, as easy as it may sound, like saying 'I want to be a doctor' or 'I'll definitely be an engineer,' or expressing an interest in drawing with thoughts like 'I like drawing; maybe I will be an artist,' is certainly one of the biggest and most challenging decisions one has to make. This choice will, in some ways, determine the future of the individual.

Choosing a career path refers to the process of deciding what career to pursue after considering a number of factors such as one's interest, ability and value.

Choosing a career path is undeniably a complicated process due to several challenges. On one hand, it involves more than more than just financial considerations, it is all about choosing something you genuinely enjoy and finding happiness in the process. Sadly, many people fail to see it this way. To them, it is all about choosing what will bring in money, or as they might say, 'it's all about chasing the bag.

The Persuasion to choose a career path that is financially lucrative outweighs the need to choose a career path base on interest. For instance, a student might choose teaching as a career path. But due to the fact that in some countries, teaching is not considered a lucrative job, such a student might feel pressure from family and friends to choose a more financially rewarding career.

This pressure can create feelings of anxiety and stress for the student because, on one hand, they want to be on good terms with their family, and the convincing arguments from others make them think there might be a valid point in opting for a financially lucrative career. On the other hand, the student actually loves and is passionate about teaching. This conflict can be confusing for the student when making a decision. It is like being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, not knowing whether to jump into the sea or remain standing.

Pressure from family and friends is one of the most common challenges students face when choosing career paths. We often hear statements like, 'I want to study geography, but my parents think it is a useless choice and want me to study law. But, I have zero interest in law.' No doubt, families, especially parents, have the best interests of their children at heart, and every parent would like to see their child succeed. However, trying to persuade or convince a child into choosing a career that does not align with their interests, simply because of its financial prospects, is certainly not a good way to demonstrate that you have your child's best interests at heart.

In Addition, the number of career paths to choose can be quite confusing. Similar to being presented with a menu of delicious meals where making one choice feels challenging, the number of interesting and attracting career paths can make it a dauting task to choose what to focus on and what to ignore especially on the part of students.

One may choose to be a nurse but also contemplate being a doctor since it's all in medicine. Additionally, thinking about becoming a surgeon adds another layer of consideration. It becomes challenging to decide because all these options are attractive and similar to what he or she initially wanted, which is to be a nurse. Without careful consideration, this dilemma can make it extremely difficult to focus on one career path, and that's why we see people switching from one course to another.

Lack of understanding about what a particular career path is all about is yet another reason why students find it challenging to choose a career path.

For example, a student choosing to study medicine and surgery might fail to understand that there is to more to it than being a doctor, a nurse or a surgeon attending to patients, reading and interpreting lab reports, administering treatment and recommending drugs.

There are other things that adds to it which one needs to consider before choosing a particular career such as, What kind of lifestyle is associated with this career? What is the stress level? how much time is involved in doing works associated with this career? and so many other things one need to consider. Nevertheless, It is not always easy to know or find out every tiny detail about a particular career, or what skills and qualifications are required especially if you haven't worked in that field before. And without this information, it is hard to make an informed decision about whether a particular career is right for you.

Conclusion

In summary, the process of choosing a career path is a challenging decision that involves numerous factors, such as pressure from family and friends, lack of the right and proper information about a particular career, and the overwhelming array of career options. This complexity can lead to indecision and may even prompt individuals to switch courses in search of the right fit.

Regardless of all the challenges, it is essential for individuals, especially students, to prioritize their genuine interests and happiness. Recognizing that a fulfilling career is one that aligns with both personal passion and practical considerations is crucial.
