The Nigerian Health System: The Good, the bad and the ugly. Finding solutions In the Midst of These.
The Nigerian Health System: The Good, the bad and the ugly. Finding solutions In the midst of these.
Hello everyone, I am so excited to participate in this competition and I want to thank the forerunners of this community for coming up with this amazing community.
The health industry in my country is characterized by lots of loopholes even when we have the best human resources in the world. What I mean is that Nigeria has one of the best brains in the medical industry all over the world which is why Nigerian doctors are sought after all over the world.
Just like every other system, the Nigerian medical industry is faced with lots of challenges and these challenges if looked upon, will be a thing of the past.
Challenges in the health industry
The health industry in my country is faced with so many challenges. A few of these are:
The issue of brain drains
The pressing issue the Nigerian medical industry is facing is brain drain. A lot of our doctors do not want to practice their profession in their country because of better payments offered to them in overseas countries. According to Voice of Africa, about fifteen to sixteen thousand doctors have left Nigeria for Europe in the past five years. The effect of this is so glaring in the country.
Shortage of healthcare workers
So many factors are responsible for this, beyond the brain drain issue I mentioned earlier, it is important to note that many healthcare workers do not want to practice their profession in the country as a result of low incentives. Comparing their emoluments with their counterparts abroad is enough discouragement. Nigeria is the most populated black nation on earth yet with the shortest number of wealth workers. Consequently, the work in our health centres is not as professional as it ought to be.
Dearth of health facilities
Talking about health facilities in my country is another thing that we're facing as a country. We lack health facilities to take care of some basic medical issues. The world is technologically driven and international best practices are absent in our health services because of the dearth of facilities. Consequently, a lot of people prefer to treat themselves outside of the country because of this.
These challenges are not impossible to tackle; they are things that the government can take care of.
First of all, I want to suggest that the government should make a law against doctors leaving their country immediately after their training. At least they should practice their profession for at least 10 years in their country before they're given the license to leave the country if they want.
Moreover, the Nigerian government should look into the salaries and earnings of health workers in the country. Their pay should be in pari passu with their count parts abroad. This will discourage them from seeking jobs elsewhere.
The government and other stakeholders in the industry should invest in the medical industry rather than going abroad for treatment. At the same time, the latest medical equipment should be provided to make their jobs effortless and seamless.
With these, I believe that some of these challenges will be addressed.
Therefore, I believe that @etukakpan01 and @ubglo17 will find this post interesting and participate in the contest.
