The Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria
THE IGBO PEOPLE OF EASTERN NIGERIA: A TRIBE THAT STILL STOOD TALL DESPITE BEING CRUSHED
I am a Nigerian and I am proud to be one. I was born and bred in the southern region of the country. I am not an Igbo neither do any of my parents are Igbo. I have no relatives from the Igbo tribe so what I am about to write is devoid of ethnic sentiment and biased.
Nigeria is a blessed country with abundant resources both human and material. She's the most populous black nation on earth with her citizens scattered all over the surface of the earth and doing exploits wherever they found themselves. Nigeria is located in the West African region of the continent, with over 300 ethnic groups and over 400 languages. The three major and dominant ethnic groups are the Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba, and the Igbo. These three ethnic groups are distinct culturally and religiously and they occupy different regions in the country. They have a rich cultural heritage and different languages and appearances.
Who then are the Igbos?
The Igbo people occupy the eastern part of Nigeria. They happen to be the third largest ethnic group in Nigeria after the Hausas and the Yorubas. The Igbos have a rich cultural heritage that has spanned over thousands of years. They are known for their exploitations and breakthroughs in businesses. The Igbos happened to be the most hard-working tribe in Nigeria. This is evidenced in their ability to exist in every nook and cranny of the country. They are a special breed of people who are naturally blessed with knowledge on the conduct of business enterprises and innovations. Although the Igbos have migrated to almost every part of the country and the world at large, they are majorly resident in the five eastern states in the country. They are, ANAMBRA, ENUGU, ABIA, IMO, and EBONYI. These people are united and they see themselves as brothers. One of the key things that unites them is their language. Wherever they found themselves they must make use of their dialects to converse.
Another outstanding thing about the Igbos is their inclination to succeed. This is the only tribe that sees success as their birthright. Hence, whatever an Igbo person does must succeed. They are in full control of the productive and distributive sectors of the country's economy. As a result of this, the eastern region is mostly developed by individuals rather than the government. They are innovative and industrious. They are known as the Japan of Africa.
Politically, they have an acephalous political culture. What do I mean? They do not have a godfather they pay allegiance to because in Igbo land everyone is a king. Most of the time, they believe in their ability to survive even without a government. The Igbo tribe has been the only tribe in Nigeria that has fought and demanded secession and self-government right from the beginning of time. They believe in themself. No tribe has ever done that. As a result of this demand led to the civil war that claimed the lives of millions of Igbos from 1967 to 1970. Even at this, their demands are still intensified toward self-determination.
The Igbos have passed through deprivations from the government of Nigeria, their distrust has led to them not being allowed to occupy strategic positions in the government of their country. No Igbo president, neither vice president as well as strategic military positions. Even with these, they still stand strong and refuse to be on their knees.
I am proud to share a country with the Igbos and together we can have a stronger and more industrialized country.
