The burden in freedom of speech and hate speech: how do we measure?

Salutations to all #silverbloggers, it's nice to be here to share ideas and opinions on some societal issues. Societies cannot be what we want them to be unless we play our parts hence, our part is to make known the things that ought to be known, saying things as they are without being political and also proffer solutions.

The fight for freedom of speech is such that everyone is involved because no one wants to be gagged. Everyone wants to have his opinion on a particular topic and subject matter. Freedom of speech is a right and everyone is supposed to respect the right of another person. However, we often experience the violation of this right either by the government or powerful individuals in society. Conversely, freedom of speech generally ought not to be gender-based. Respect to those societies who still segregate their citizens based on their genders, giving certain rights to some and denying the same to others.

How free is the freedom of speech??

Whenever the government projects and promotes freedom of speech, it appears as a trap fashioned against people, how do we then measure freedom of speech for one to know that he is not stepping boundaries?

The Dynamics of Hate Speech

The only problem I am having with the concept of hate speech is in the definition of the concept. No one has been able to clearly define what entails hate speech. My disappointment has been that whenever I listen to a local radio program about the activities of the government, callers, as well as the guests are not allowed to say certain things on air, for fear of being sanctioned. Most times when the government wants to oppress the people they begin with the enforcement of hate speech.

I think that there should be a universal meaning of hate speech and not what is relative to different regions or what different governments think it should be. This is a subtle way of denying the people their rights and freedom.

As the world marks World Press Day today, it is my call that people should be allowed to express themselves on matters that affect them without being intimidated or gagged.
