Reading Culture Among Youngsters in Schools: My Perspective. Eng/Esp

I have been in the classroom for the past eight years as a teacher. I teach high school students, and as young as they are, one thing I have experienced that I wish to share with everyone here is that the reading culture among high school students is drastically dropping. I don't know about other climes, but in my environment, children are not taking their studies as seriously as they are supposed to. It happens that yearly, the situation is getting worse, and I am afraid that it will get to the extent that schools will have to shut down. Before this time, we had the best brains that took their studies seriously. Many students were striving to be the best in their classes, and the competition was so intense that people who missed the first position would cry their eyes out and warm up to do better in the coming academic session. But today, students have developed a laissez-faire attitude towards education. They do not take reading as a serious venture. They don't even see the need to read.

Currently, senior secondary school students are taking the West African examination that will usher them into tertiary institutions. Going around some schools in my locality, I found out that examination practices have taken hold of the education sector in my country. I weep for the coming generation. Examination malpractices that were seen as a crime and people were hiding to do it has suddenly become a way of life in societies. It's at this point I have come to realize why students are not taking their studies seriously because they know how to manoeuvre their way in some of these examinations. The society where a great chunk of students do not read will be evident in their respective national and international examinations. For example, the just concluded joint admission and matriculation examination results show that about 50% of the students could not score up to 250 points. This is so bad for the people aiming for admission into the university. These are people who spend their time on social media doing unprintable things, wasting their time on things that will not add value to their lives.

A society that students don't read is a failed society. Such a society is on the verge of collapse. And if intervention does not come early, then such a society’s misfortune becomes irredeemable. The foundation of every society is built on books. Show me a society with readers and I will show you a society with great minds, development strides and problem solving. A society with great enlightenment and an increased standard of living.

There is so much knowledge to gain from reading books. Many people do not know this, lots of hidden secrets of life are contained in books. These secrets can only be made known if you read books. Parents and guidance should make their children see the need to read books. No one can become useful to oneself and society if one does not read. We will continue to have amateur doctors, architects, masons, musicians, and lawyers, among others, if our youngsters do not take reading books seriously. When this happens, the next generation will be the endangered species of humans.

He estado en el aula durante los últimos ocho años como profesor. Enseño a alumnos de secundaria, y por muy jóvenes que sean, una cosa que he experimentado y que deseo compartir con todos aquí es que la cultura de la lectura entre los alumnos de secundaria está descendiendo drásticamente. No sé en otros climas, pero en mi entorno, los chicos no se están tomando los estudios tan en serio como se supone. Ocurre que cada año, la situación empeora, y temo que llegue al extremo de que las escuelas tengan que cerrar. Antes teníamos los mejores cerebros que se tomaban en serio sus estudios. Muchos estudiantes se esforzaban por ser los mejores en sus clases, y la competencia era tan intensa que los que no llegaban al primer puesto lloraban a lágrima viva y calentaban motores para hacerlo mejor en la siguiente sesión académica. Pero hoy en día, los estudiantes han desarrollado una actitud de laissez-faire hacia la educación. No se toman la lectura en serio. Ni siquiera ven la necesidad de leer.

Actualmente, los alumnos de secundaria superior se presentan al examen de África Occidental que les permitirá acceder a los centros de enseñanza superior. Recorriendo algunas escuelas de mi localidad, descubrí que las prácticas de examen se han apoderado del sector educativo de mi país. Lloro por la próxima generación. Las malas prácticas en los exámenes, que se consideraban un delito y la gente se escondía para hacerlo, se han convertido de repente en una forma de vida en las sociedades. Es en este punto donde me he dado cuenta de por qué los estudiantes no se toman en serio sus estudios porque saben cómo abrirse camino en algunos de estos exámenes. La sociedad en la que una gran parte de los estudiantes no lee quedará patente en sus respectivos exámenes nacionales e internacionales. Por ejemplo, los resultados de los exámenes conjuntos de admisión y matriculación que acaban de concluir muestran que alrededor del 50% de los estudiantes no pudieron obtener hasta 250 puntos. Esto es muy malo para las personas que aspiran a ingresar en la universidad. Son personas que pasan el tiempo en las redes sociales haciendo cosas impresentables, malgastando su tiempo en cosas que no añadirán valor a sus vidas.

Una sociedad en la que los estudiantes no leen es una sociedad fracasada. Una sociedad así está al borde del colapso. Y si no se interviene pronto, la desgracia de esa sociedad se convierte en irremediable. La base de toda sociedad son los libros. Muéstrame una sociedad con lectores y te mostraré una sociedad con grandes mentes, avances en el desarrollo y resolución de problemas. Una sociedad con una gran ilustración y un mayor nivel de vida.

La lectura de libros aporta muchos conocimientos. Mucha gente no lo sabe: en los libros se esconden muchos secretos de la vida. Estos secretos sólo pueden darse a conocer si se leen libros. Los padres y los orientadores deberían hacer ver a sus hijos la necesidad de leer libros. Nadie puede llegar a ser útil a sí mismo y a la sociedad si no lee. Seguiremos teniendo médicos, arquitectos, albañiles, músicos y abogados aficionados, entre otros, si nuestros jóvenes no se toman en serio la lectura de libros. Cuando esto ocurra, la próxima generación será la especie humana en peligro de extinción.
