It doesn't matter if it's noon and the sun melts with the cobblestones of my city, or if the heat is so overwhelming that it drenches us in sweat, for when there is a desire to explore, to walk the streets we love so much, we do not stop for any reason or excuse.

I have decided to wander through the corners of one of the busiest squares in this city that owns my dreams. It is the well-known Workers' Square or also Plaza de la Merced. In each of the photographs I show you, you will notice how crowded the place is, even during the time of day when the shadows hide and everything is invaded by the sun.

The Plaza de los Trabajadores, and that is its current name, is one of the oldest squares in Camagüey, presided over by the Merced Church, which is without a doubt one of the great churches of the entire region and also houses treasures venerated by the faithful, such as the Holy Sepulcher, made of silver and gold and displayed during Holy Week in full pilgrimage, or the much-visited Catacombs, a historical treasure that lies dormant in the underground spaces.

Restored several times, it still exhibits its original colors and the details that have always made it one of the most beloved. Its clock continues to chime at the exact hours, which is appreciated by the local residents.

On one of the streets leading to the square, two buildings dazzle the passerby: the Birthplace of Major Ignacio Agramonte, one of the most revered heroes of Camagüey, and next to it, the headquarters of the Central Post Office of the province. As a detail, in front of Agramonte's Birthplace, there is a replica of the house with a legend in braille that can be touched in all its details, made specifically so that the visually impaired can learn about such a lasting and imposing building.

On one side of the church, walking at the pace of other passersby, is a bronze statue of Cuba's National Poet, who, for being born in our province, is venerated here as a symbol of the value of our people.

The square, presided over by a ceiba tree that, as you can see, is very young, was planted not long ago when the one originally planted was accidentally knocked down.

Bordering the square are the Banco de Crédito y Comercio, located in well-preserved century-old buildings, and the headquarters of the Provincial Radio Station Radio Cadena Agramonte, the pride of every Camagüeyan and one of the most common ways to stay informed.

Majestic and blue, competing with the magnanimous blue of the sky at that noon hour, stands the Santa Cecilia Convention Center, with the city's coat of arms on its front, a place of great beauty and host to major national and international events.

Art occasionally takes over the square, and until recently, we could find beautiful paintings by local artists, but at the moment, only a large-scale perennial metal sculpture watches over the steps of the passersby.

The benches, the chairs of the square's café, the trees, and above all the blue sky are witnesses to how beautiful this square can be, which is often the center of cultural events such as music festivals, visual arts, and even sports exhibitions.

No importa si es mediodía y el sol se funde con los adoquines de mi ciudad, o si el calor es tan soberbio que nos inunda de sudor; pues cuando hay deseos de conocer, de caminar las calles que tanto amamos, no nos detenemos por ninguna causa o pretexto.

He decidido andar por los rincones de una de las plazas más transitadas de esta ciudad, dueña de mis sueños. Se trata de la conocida Plaza de los Trabajadores o también Plaza de la Merced. En cada una de las fotografías que les muestro, notarán lo concurrido del lugar, aun tratándose del horario donde las sombras se esconden y todo es invadido por el astro rey.

La Plaza de los Trabajadores, y ese es su nombre actual, es una de las plazas más antiguas de Camagüey, presidida por la Iglesia de la Merced, la que sin duda es una de las grandes iglesias de toda la región y que además cuenta con tesoros venerados por los fieles, como el Santo Sepulcro, hecho de plata y oro y mostrado en Semana Santa en plena peregrinación, o las tan visitadas Catacumbas, un tesoro histórico que yace dormido en los espacios subterráneos.

Restaurada varias veces, hoy sigue exhibiendo sus colores originales y los detalles que la han hecho siempre una de las más queridas. Su reloj sigue dando las campanadas a las horas precisas, lo que agradecen los vecinos del lugar.

En una de las calles de entrada a la plaza, dos edificaciones deslumbran al transeúnte: la Casa Natal del Mayor Ignacio Agramonte, uno de los héroes más venerados del Camagüey, y a su lado la sede del Correo Central de la provincia. Como detalle, se muestra delante de la Casa Natal de Agramonte una réplica de la casa, con una leyenda en braille que puede ser tocada en todos sus detalles y está hecha específicamente para que las personas con discapacidad visual conozcan tan duradera e imponente edificación.

A un lado de la iglesia, caminando al ritmo de los demás transeúntes, hay una estatua de bronce del Poeta Nacional de Cuba, que por haber nacido en nuestra provincia es venerado aquí, como símbolo de lo valioso de nuestra gente.

La plaza, presidida por una ceiba que, como observan, es muy joven, fue plantada no hace mucho tiempo cuando la que originalmente estaba sembrada sufrió un accidente y fue derribada.

Bordeando la plaza, los Bancos de Crédito y Comercio, ubicados en edificaciones centenarias y bien conservadas, y la sede de la Emisora Provincial Radio Cadena Agramonte, orgullo de cada camagüeyano y una de las formas más utilizadas para mantenerse informado.

Majestuosa y azul, compitiendo con el magnánimo azul del cielo a esa hora del mediodía, se alza, con el escudo de la ciudad en su frente, el Centro de Convenciones Santa Cecilia, lugar de gran belleza y de grandes eventos nacionales e internacionales.

El arte de vez en cuando toma la plaza y hasta hace poco encontrábamos bellas obras pictóricas de exponentes de la plástica del patio, pero en estos momentos, solo una escultura de metal a gran formato perenne vigila los pasos de los transeúntes.

Los bancos, las sillas del café de la plaza, los árboles y sobre todo el cielo azul son testigos de lo bella que puede ser esta plaza, que a menudo es el centro de eventos culturales como festivales de música, artes plásticas y hasta exhibiciones deportivas.

Esta es una invitación a no desaprovechar los momentos en esta ciudad, donde los pasos siempre te dirigen hacia la historia y el arte.
