A grotto in the middle of the city [Eng/Esp]

There are few things more interesting than walking through the city where you were born, especially when you love that city with all your heart. For this reason, I always share the fruits of these walks with you. This time, my feet took me to a place beloved for its authenticity.

Have you ever seen a cave in the very heart of a city? Well, my Camagüey has a grotto right in its center, and while many legends have been woven about it, the truth lies just over a hundred years ago when a Catalan master built it.

Antonio Moya, a Catalan architect, decided to create this grotto using the stone-like elements of ferrocement, following the influence of Catalan Modernism driven by the great Gaudí. At the time, it was very attractive not only for its design but also for its damp, artificial formations of hanging stalactites and stalagmites growing from the floor.

This place is one of the most visited attractions for those who come to the city, as it is located in the Casino Campestre, which is also the largest urban park in the country. Although some weather phenomena have damaged it and it sometimes feels like it lacks a bit of maintenance from restorers, this site is always on the itineraries of park visitors.

One of the groups that often approaches the grotto is children. Having grown up away from nature and real caves, they come to it with admiration and astonishment. Parents often recreate many stories about this magical place.

I remember a friend I grew up with, with whom I studied the first school grades, assured me that anyone who entered the grotto could instantly appear in China, as it functioned as a transportation portal to the other side of the world. That story, however incredible now, fed our fantasy back then.

The day I took my little girl to see the place, I remember she came out crying. She didn't like the spot; I imagine a bit of fear accompanied her because of the darkness visible in its depths.

This grotto, although with clear origins and inspirations in Spanish and especially Catalan architecture, and close to Art Nouveau, is embedded in a very Caribbean environment surrounded by Royal Palms, the national tree of our country.

While walking through the grotto with some friends and taking photos, I laughed and told them that at times I felt like a real spelunker because, even though this construction is eminently artificial, it makes us feel very close to nature.

Researching when I got home, I discovered that in Barcelona, in Park Güell, there is a very similar grotto with these same stone-like elements. This is why many places refer to the Catalan grotto kept in the Casino Campestre of my Camagüey.

Una gruta en el medio de la ciudad

Hay pocas cosas más interesantes que salir a caminar por la ciudad que te vio nacer, y más cuando amas a esa ciudad con todas tus fuerzas. Por esa razón, siempre comparto con ustedes el fruto de esas caminatas. En este caso, mis pies me llevaron a un lugar que es amado por su autenticidad.

¿Ustedes han visto alguna vez una cueva en el mismo corazón de una ciudad? Pues mi Camagüey tiene una gruta en su mismo centro, y sobre ella muchos han tejido muchas leyendas, pero la verdad se remonta a poco más de cien años atrás, cuando un maestro catalán la construyó.

Antonio Moya, un arquitecto catalán, decidió hacer esta gruta con elementos pétreos de ferrocemento que seguían la influencia del modernismo catalán impulsado por el gran Gaudí. En su momento, resultó muy atrayente no solo por su diseño, sino por sus húmedas formaciones artificiales de estalactitas colgantes y estalagmitas creciendo desde el piso.

Este lugar resulta ser uno de los atractivos más visitados por los que pisan la ciudad, pues está enclavado en el Casino Campestre, que es además el parque urbano más grande del país. Aunque algunos fenómenos meteorológicos se han encargado de dañarla y a veces se siente que falta un poco de mantenimiento por parte de los restauradores, este sitio nunca falta en los itinerarios de los visitantes del parque.

Uno de los sectores que muy a menudo se acercan a la gruta son los niños. Alejados de crecer cerca de la naturaleza y de las verdaderas cuevas, llegan a ella con admiración y asombro, y no son pocas las historias que los padres recrean acerca del mágico lugar.

Recuerdo que una amiga que creció conmigo y con la cual estudié los primeros grados escolares me aseguraba que quien entraba a la gruta podía aparecer al instante en China, ya que funcionaba como un portal de transporte hasta el otro lado del mundo. Esa historia, aunque increíble ahora, en aquel momento alimentaba nuestra fantasía.

El día que llevé a mi niña a conocer el lugar, recuerdo que salió llorando. El sitio no le gustó; imagino que un poco de temor la acompañó por la oscuridad que puede verse al fondo de ella.

Esta gruta, aunque con claros orígenes e inspiraciones en la arquitectura española y catalana en especial, y que se acerca al Art Nouveau, está empotrada en todo un entorno muy caribeño, rodeado de palmas reales, que son el árbol nacional de nuestro país.

Mientras recorría la gruta junto a algunos amigos y tomaba las fotos, me reía y les decía que por momentos me sentía como toda una espeleóloga, porque aunque esta construcción es eminentemente artificial, nos hace sentirnos muy cercanos a la naturaleza.

Investigando cuando llegué a casa, descubrí que en Barcelona, en el parque Güell, hay una gruta muy similar con estos mismos elementos pétreos, por lo que en muchos lugares se habla de la gruta catalana que guarda el Casino Campestre de mi Camagüey.
