Coastal Sentry

Today I will be drawing a character from Splinterlands—an aquatic creature called Coastal Sentry. It's a cunning being that strikes enemies when they are at their weakest, acting as stealthy sentinels. It is a common rarity card from the Chaos Legion set.

Hoy estaré dibujando un personaje de Splinterlands: una criatura acuática llamada Coastal Sentry. Es un ser astuto que ataca a los enemigos cuando se encuentran más débiles, actuando como centinelas de naturaleza sigilosa. Es una carta de rareza común de la entrega Chaos Legion.

I want to work on this drawing using a mix of traditional and digital techniques—doing all the line art with pen and importing it into Ibis Paint for coloring. But first, I’ll start with the sketch to clearly define all the parts of my character. This character is known for a seductive and dangerous mermaid design: she has gills on the sides, pointed ears with earrings, a shark fin, and her most distinctive feature—a large, wavy blue mane.

Quiero trabajar este dibujo en una mezcla entre tradicional y digital, haciendo todo el line art a bolígrafo e importándolo a Ibis Paint, donde haré el coloreado. Pero antes empiezo con el boceto para dejar claras todas las partes de mi personaje. Este personaje se caracteriza por un diseño de sirena sensual y peligrosa: tiene branquias a los costados, orejas puntiagudas con pendientes, aleta de tiburón y lo que más la caracteriza, su gran cabellera azul ondulante.

The next step is to use a pen to gradually complete all the linework of the drawing. The most important thing is to make sure the lines are very well defined so that Ibis Paint can extract them properly. I really enjoy doing linework like this because it helps me relax, and little by little, it gives shape to the drawing. I really liked how the drawing turned out, so I took a photo of it—and that’s it!

Lo que sigue es utilizar un lapicero para poco a poco hacer toda la línea del dibujo. Lo más importante es que el dibujo tenga líneas muy bien definidas, para que Ibis Paint las pueda extraer bien. Me gusta mucho hacer líneas así porque desestresa mucho y poco a poco le da forma a nuestro dibujo. Me gustó mucho cómo quedó el dibujo, así que tomé una foto del dibujo y listo.

Upon importing the drawing into Ibis Paint, the app automatically gives me the option to extract the lines. From there, I can gradually adjust the lighting and shadows until I get the linework just the way I want it. Something tricky happened, though: the photo I took wasn’t well lit, and when I imported just the drawing, I realized it too late—I no longer had the original to retake the photo.

Still, I worked with what I had. I had to make several corrections in Ibis Paint, removing noise that had been imported as stray lines and fixing parts of the linework that didn’t come through properly.

Al importar el dibujo a Ibis Paint, automáticamente me da la opción de extraer las líneas, y puedo ir poco a poco ajustando luces y sombras hasta obtener las líneas como quiero. Me pasó algo difícil de solucionar: al tomar la foto, no quedó bien iluminada, y cuando importé solo el dibujo me di cuenta de eso, pero ya no tenía el original para volver a tomar la foto.

Aun así, trabajé con esa imagen. Tuve que hacerle varias correcciones en Ibis Paint, eliminando ruido que se importó como líneas y corrigiendo trazos que no quedaron bien definidos.

In my drawing, I worked in layers for the different parts of the composition. I would first paint each section, then add shadows, and finally highlights. I added some textures to the tail and fins. I especially loved how the hand fin turned out—between the textures and the lighting, it looks really good.

Drawing the hair was incredibly satisfying. I experimented with different line styles for the highlights and shadows, and I absolutely loved the result. The light and reflections on the skin also turned out beautifully; they give it that shiny, aquatic-creature texture that I was aiming for.

The coloring process was super enjoyable. I had a great time working on it—it was very relaxing. I love coloring with my finger in Ibis Paint; it’s such a calm and soothing experience.

En mi dibujo trabajé en capas para las distintas partes de la composición. Primero pintaba cada sección, luego le agregaba sombras y finalmente luces. Agregué algunas texturas a la cola y a las aletas. Me gustó mucho cómo quedó la aleta de la mano—entre las texturas y las luces se ve muy muy bien.

Dibujar el pelo fue muy satisfactorio. Experimenté con distintas líneas para luces y sombras, y me gustó mucho mucho cómo quedó. Las luces y reflejos de la piel también me encantaron porque le dan esa textura brillante de piel de criatura acuática.

El coloreado fue muy muy entretenido. Pasé un muy buen rato coloreando y fue muy desestresante. Me encanta colorear con el dedo en Ibis Paint—es muy muy tranquilo y ayuda a relajarse.

I’m sharing the finished drawing with you again—this is a piece I really loved. I was very happy with the colors and especially with the use of textures, which is something quite new for me in Ibis Paint. I want to keep exploring this technique that blends traditional and digital art, because it gives me the ease of traditional line art and the richness of digital coloring.

I’d love to keep painting like this—not just Splinterlands characters, but also characters from my favorite video games and mangas. I hope you enjoyed my drawing! Les vuelvo a compartir el dibujo finalizado. Este es un dibujo que me gustó mucho. Me gustaron mucho los colores y me gustó mucho el uso de texturas, que en Ibis Paint para mí es algo bastante nuevo. Quiero seguir dibujando en esta técnica entre tradicional y digital, porque me da la facilidad del line art tradicional y la calidad del coloreado digital.
