CITY CLINIC HEALTH AWARENESS
Topic: ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE
INTRODUCTION:
This is when infections (viral, bacterial, parasitic or fungal) becomes so difficult to treat as a result of not responding to the routine drugs they formerly responded to.
WHY IS ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE A PROBLEM?
In our environment where we live with microorganisms as our neighbours, surely, developing resistance to antimicrobials or antibiotics is very worrisome...
For instance, this is the lab result of a patient who had wound injury to the arm and he has been hospitalized for 3 months now simply because of Antimicrobial Resistance.As you can see the organism responsible for his infection is now resistant to 5 good antibiotic drugs.
They make infections so hard to treat
They are financially draining as they require you to step up the antibiotics to an alternative one, which obviously will be expensive.
Routine interventions done for others without much thought becomes a challenge for doctors on you because of the fear of you coming down with infection which they can't treat because of your resistance.
WHAT CAUSES THIS ANTI MICROBIAL RESISTANCE?
It is YOU! And nobody else...maybe you've been oblivious of your actions..
Misuse of Antibiotics!!! And this most times arises from self prescription and self treatment.
You have a yeast infection or a fungal infection or parasitic infection and boom! You already bought flagyl or ciprofloxacin, maybe because your doctor prescribed it for you when you had fever and automatically whenever you have fever, it is your first to-go-to
Not completing a prescribed dose!!!
When you feel like your good, you suddenly stop your medication even without completing the prescribed dosage.
N/B: Tablet Antibiotics are most times taken twice/ day for at least 5days
What happens?
You might be fine, no doubt but then you need to remember that "An arrow pulled back in a bow flies farther forward' and that is the momentum you just gave that microorganism.
Overuse of Antibiotics!!!
Even when your antibiotics was prescribed by a doctor, some finish the required dose and feel like there's a need to add extra , maybe to surprise the infection.
Poor prevention and control of microorganism!!!
Prevention they say will always be better than cure my fellow Citizens
What can YOU do?
💊 Make effort to complete your prescribed antibiotics.
💊 Never self-medicate nor take drugs without doctor's prescription
💊 Practice good hygiene—handwashing saves lives.
💊 Get recommended vaccines to prevent infections.
