Once again, I confess that I'm not much of an anime critic. Normally, if I don't like what I see, I just ignore it and don't review it. But in this case, Witch Watch isn't a bad anime per se, it's just that the idea I had about this work was very different from what it actually turned out to be in the end. Once again, I don't want to be seen as a killjoy, as I am a fan of comedy and everything related to this entertaining genre. But something I still haven't quite come to terms with (even after watching more than 300 animes to date) is the absurd humor of the japanese. Before talking in depth about the anime, I want to give my opinion—free of censorship and cancellation—about what this industry currently considers "humor".

I don't consider myself the right person to talk about humor when I'm someone who grew up watching Adam Sandler comedy movies since I was a kid. I consider my sense of humor to be the most difficult thing to define, as is my current mental state. While I am not a fan of american humor related to profanity and nudity, I will not deny that in some stories or circumstances it does make me laugh, especially if that is what the work itself is about. Now, on the eastern side, I have seen comedy anime of different styles. From black humor and jokes related to sex and nudity, to absurd humor where meaning and logic disappear completely. I feel a little guilty for enjoying the former more than the latter, to be honest.

Una vez más, confieso que no soy mucho de criticar animes. Normalmente si no me gusta lo que veo simplemente lo paso por alto y no le hago ninguna reseña. Pero en este caso, Witch Watch no es un mal anime en sí, solo que la idea que tuve acerca de esta obra fue muy diferente a lo que realmente llegó a ser al final. Una vez más, no quiero que me tomen por aguafiestas ya que soy fan de la comedia y todo lo relacionado a este divertido género. Pero algo que aún no he terminado de procesar (aún después de haber visto más de 300 animes hasta la fecha de hoy) es el humor absurdo que tienen los japoneses. Si, antes de hablar a profundidad del anime, quiero dejar mi opinión -libre de censura y cancelación- sobre lo que esta industria considera como “humor” actualmente.

No me considero el adecuado para hablar de humor cuando soy de los que crecí viendo películas de comedia de Adam Sandler desde que era un niño. Mi sentido del humor lo considero lo más difícil de definir al igual que lo es mi estado mental actual. Si bien no soy partidario del humor americano relacionado a groserías y desnudos, no voy a negar tampoco que en algunas historias o circunstancias sí me dan risa, sobre todo si la obra en sí se trata de eso. Ahora, en el lado oriental he visto animes de comedia de diferentes estilos. Desde humor negro y chistes relacionados a sexo y desnudos, hasta humor absurdo donde el sentido y la lógica desaparecen por completo. Me siento un poco culpable al divertirme más con lo primero que con lo segundo, la verdad.

But it's not that I'm against absurd humor; I find it entertaining, and sometimes it has its unforgettable moments. But there are many jokes and details that completely escape my understanding and just leave me somewhat indifferent. Although this is mainly due to the cultural differences between myself and the creator of the work. That's why anime with absurd humor aren't my favorites to choose from, to be honest. On the other hand, I almost missed a type of comedy that isn't one of my favorites either, but I like it more than absurd humor. I'm not sure what to call it, but it's the kind of humor that is mostly based on parodies and references to other works or to popular culture itself. This is where we return to Witch Watch, as its humor is a mixture of parodies and absurd humor.

Witch Watch is, in short, an anime about unusual teenagers with powers who are descendants of witches and fantastic creatures living their seemingly ordinary lives with a touch of magic and absurd moments from time to time. Much of the series deals with common cases involving Nico's friends, family, and classmates with common problems, but with an unusual and fantastic way of "solving" those problems. You have probably seen or recognized this type of work in other anime or similar series. It is the typical story that mixes common situations, as if taken from a Slice of Life, with magic and fantasy to give it a humor that is mostly absurd, but apparently fun for many.

Pero no es que esté en contra del humor absurdo, me divierte y a veces tiene sus momentos inolvidables. Pero hay muchos chistes y detalles que se escapan por completo de mi comprensión y solo me deja un tanto indiferente. Aunque mayormente esto se debe a la diferencia de culturas que hay entre uno y el creador de la obra. Es por eso que animes de humor absurdo no son de mis favoritos para escoger, la verdad. Por otro lado, casi se me escapa un tipo de comedia que tampoco es de mis favoritos, pero me gusta más que el humor absurdo. No sé muy bien cómo llamarlo, pero se trata de ese humor que se basa mayormente en parodias y referencias a otras obras o a la misma cultura popular. Es aquí donde volvemos a Witch Watch ya que su humor es una mezcla de parodias con humor absurdo.

Witch Watch es -en resumen- un anime de adolescentes poco comunes con poderes y descendencias de brujas y criaturas fantásticas que viven sus vidas, aparentemente comunes, con un toque de magia y momentos absurdos de vez en cuando. Gran parte de la serie trata de casos comunes de amigos, familiares y compañeros de Nico con problemas comunes, pero con una forma poco común y fantástica de “resolver” dichos problemas. Seguramente habrás visto o reconocido este tipo de obras de otros animes o series parecidas. Es la típica historia que mezcla casos comunes, como si fueran sacadas de un Slice of Life, con magia y fantasía para darle un humor que mayormente es absurdo, pero divertido para muchos, aparentemente.

It's not that I don't enjoy it, because there are moments that are genuinely funny, especially when entire episodes are parodies of popular culture. It's like watching a kind of animated Sitcom, but without the background laughter. When I understand the references or the messages the anime is trying to convey, I end up enjoying it. But when I expect a seemingly romantic and fantastic story between teenagers with a linear sequence of events and character development, it's normal for me to end up somewhat disappointed when I don't find any of this in this anime. At least not as I expected, to be honest, since it does have its plot and development during the first half of the anime, but it's more like introductory episodes of new characters.

But otherwise, what we see are these cases from the daily life of Nico and Morihito, where the teenage couple lives together with other kids of fantasy descent. I like that the japanese play with what is common in their daily lives, but adding characters taken from a fantasy story. There are more than a few cases that I consider to be among the best anime I've ever seen, but unfortunately, that's not the case here with Witch Watch. Not only because of what I mentioned earlier, but also because I honestly can't quite get familiar with any of the characters in the group of kids and the teenage witch who is the protagonist. Maybe it's because I haven't seen any of these characters develop in a way that convinces me.

No es que no me divierta a mí ya que hay momentos que son verdaderamente divertidos, sobre todo cuando son episodios enteros de parodias de la cultura popular. Es como ver una especie de Sitcom animado, pero sin las risas de fondo. Cuando entiendo las referencias o los mensajes que intenta enviar el anime termino disfrutando de la misma. Pero cuando espero una historia aparentemente romántica y fantástica entre adolescentes con una secuencia lineal de sucesos y un desarrollo de personajes; es normal que termine un tanto decepcionado al no encontrar nada de esto en este anime. Al menos no como lo esperaba, la verdad, ya que sí tiene su trama y desarrollo durante la primera mitad del anime, pero no es más como episodios introductorios de nuevos personajes.

Pero de resto lo que vemos son estos casos de la vida diaria de Nico y Morihito donde vive la pareja de adolescentes junto con otros chicos de ascendencia de seres de fantasía. Me gusta que los japoneses jueguen con lo que es común en sus vidas diarias, pero añadiendo personajes sacados de una historia de fantasía. Hay más de un caso que considero son de los mejores animes que he visto en mi vida, pero lamentablemente no es lo mismo aquí con Witch Watch. No solo por lo que ya mencioné anteriormente, sino porque sinceramente no termino de familiarizarme con ningún personaje del grupo de chicos y la bruja adolescente que tienen como protagonista. Tal vez y sea porque no he visto un desarrollo de alguno de estos personajes que me terminen de convencer.

Or maybe it's the fact that the anime seems to be more interested in entertaining with these common everyday situations mixed with unusual and nonsensical solutions, rather than telling a story with a plot that can be followed and understood. But no, what we have are random situations involving random people with random characters doing random things. There is no clear plot or storyline to follow, unlike any other anime or television series. I don't know, honestly, I have no idea what exactly it is that I don't like about this anime. But one thing I do know is that what it tried to convey from the beginning was not what it turned out to be later on.

Maybe I'm just jumping to conclusions with all this, and the random cases in this anime are what have made me think that this work is not worth following in the future. Maybe right after this, before the anime ends, it will get more interesting with some kind of conclusion or arc that can be followed and enjoyed as such. I repeat, it's not that I don't like all the humor and parodies or references in its random case episodes. It's just that, to watch a work like this, I'd rather watch The Big Bang Theory or any other funny Sitcom by Warner Bros. sitcom for the umpteenth time. Asian humor is still not my favorite, to be honest.

As if that weren't enough, we still haven't talked about what "romance" is in this anime. Because yes, what we're supposed to see in its more than 20 episodes is a romantic comedy. But I think they went overboard with the comedy and completely forgot about the romance, leaving it in the background of this story. What is supposed to be the development of a romantic relationship between Nico and Morihito is simply a few romantic clichés and tender moments scattered between episodes of parodies and random jokes. There is no development, no declarations, no sign of progress, nothing. Honestly, this anime is disappointing in terms of romance, to be honest.

O posiblemente sea el hecho de que el anime pareciera que busca más entretener con estos casos comunes de la vida diaria mezclados con soluciones poco comunes y sin sentido; en vez de contar una historia con un desarrollo que se pueda seguir y entender. Pero no, lo que tenemos son casos randoms de gente random con personajes random haciendo cosas random. Sin una trama clara ni una línea de historia por seguir como cualquier otro anime o serie de televisión. No lo sé, sinceramente no tengo idea de qué es exactamente lo que no me termina de gustar de este anime. Pero algo que sí sé es que en cuanto a lo que se intentó contar desde el principio no fue lo que resultó ser tiempo después.

Tal vez y solamente me precipite con todo esto y los casos randoms que tiene este anime son lo que me han hecho pensar que esta obra no vale la pena seguirla en un futuro. Tal vez y justo después de esto el anime, antes de terminar con su emisión, se ponga más interesante con algún desenlace o un arco que sí se pueda seguir y disfrutar como tal. Repito, no es que no me guste todo el humor y las parodias o referencias que tiene en sus episodios de casos randoms. Solo que, para ver una obra así, prefiero mejor verme por enésima vez The Big Bang Theory o cualquier otra Sitcom divertida de Warner Bros. El humor asiático sigue sin ser de mis preferidos, la verdad.

Por si no fuera suficiente, aún no hablamos de lo que es el “romance” en este anime. Porque sí, se supone que lo que veremos en sus más de 20 episodios es una comedia romántica. Pero creo que se pasaron de comedia y se olvidaron por completo del romance, dejándolo hasta en un segundo o tercer plano en esta historia. Lo que se supone que sería el desarrollo de una relación romántica entre Nico y Morihito es simplemente uno que otro cliché romántico y momento tierno súper contado entre episodios y episodios de parodias y chistes randoms nomás. No hay desarrollo, no hay declaraciones, no hay ninguna señal de avance, nada. Sinceramente, lamentable este anime en lo que respecta a romance, la verdad.

Last but not least, let's talk about another detail of this anime that I didn't really like either, and that is its audiovisual aspect. It wasn't like that at first, but with the rest of the episodes, Witch Watch ended up showing signs of being an animated adaptation with a production level that wasn't as high as expected. Don't get me wrong, visually it looks good, at least in terms of character design, visual effects, transition styles, and movements. Even the appropriate use of lighting, shadows, and a vivid and varied color palette is attractive. However, where it often falls short is in its fluidity and consistent quality throughout all its episodes. There are episodes that have a fairly striking level of quality, with extremely high fluidity and very remarkable visual details.

But the rest ends up showing us static images with some basic motion effects. I'm not saying that the animation is bad, I repeat, it's just these details that don't quite convince me. As someone who watches a lot of anime every season, I know quite well what bad animation is, and this is definitely not the case. But I wouldn't say that the animation is as good as it seems at first either. Still, for a work that has to play with random scenarios, exaggerated expressions, and even visual references and parodies, it's normal for them to take pains to vary its audiovisual quality. As for the sound effects and soundtrack, they're not bad, but I prefer the first opening theme. In short, this is an anime for anyone who likes randomness, absurd humor, and magic in everyday life.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the fantasy, romance, and comedy genres.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos de otro detalle de este anime que tampoco me terminó de gustar y es su aspecto audiovisual. Al principio no era así, pero con el resto de los episodios Witch Watch terminó mostrando señales de ser una adaptación animada con un nivel de producción no tan alto como se esperaba. No me malentiendan, visualmente se nota que tiene un buen aspecto, al menos en lo que respecta al diseño de personajes, efectos visuales, estilos de transición y movimientos. Incluso el uso adecuado de luces, sombras y paleta de colores vivos y variados es hasta atractivo. Sin embargo, en lo que llega a fallar muchas veces es en su fluidez y la constante calidad que muestra en todos sus capítulos. Hay episodios que tienen un nivel de calidad bastante llamativo, con una fluidez altísima y detalles visuales muy destacables.

Pero de resto termina mostrándonos planos de imágenes estáticas con algún efecto de movimiento básico. No digo con esto que tenga una mala animación, repito, es solo estos detalles los que no me terminan de convencer. Como alguien que ve muchos animes cada temporada sé bastante bien lo que es una mala animación y en definitiva este no es el caso. Pero tampoco diría que tiene una animación tan buena como aparenta al principio. Igual, para ser una obra que tiene que jugar con escenarios randoms, expresiones sobre-exageradas y hasta detalles de referencias visuales y parodias, es normal que se esmeren en variar su calidad audiovisual. En cuanto a los efectos de sonido y banda sonora no está mal, pero prefiero quedarme con su primer opening, nomás. En fin, este es un anime para todo aquel que le guste lo random, el humor absurdo y la magia en la vida cotidiana.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, romance y comedia.
