Hello, anime fans. The summer season has come to an end, which means it's time for my usual quarterly "TOPs" where I talk about the anime I liked the most (or maybe not so much). This time, we'll be talking about romance anime, not only because it's one of the most popular genres in the industry, but also because it completely dominated this season with an excellent list of series. I can say that this was one of my favorite seasons, without a doubt, as incomparable works such as My Dress-Up Darling (with its second season) and Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Clause (a highly anticipated sequel) returned.
A Couple of Cuckoos also returned with its second season, as did Rent-A-Girlfriend with its fourth season, but to be honest, they were more disappointing than surprising. However, as some of you may already know, in these TOPs I will only talk about anime that have been broadcast for the first time this season and not sequels or continuations of works already known or broadcast in previous years. I would also like to remind you that what you are about to read is my sincere and personal opinion, and that I have rated each anime on a scale of 1 to 10. Se puede decir que esta fue de mis temporadas favoritas, sin lugar a dudas, ya que regresaron obras incomparables como lo son My Dress-Up Darling (con su 2da temporada) y Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Clause (una secuela bastante esperada).
También regresó A Couple of Cuckoos con su 2da temporada y Rent-A-Girlfriend con su 4ta temporada, pero fueron más decepcionantes que sorprendentes, la verdad. Watari-kun's ****** Is About to Collapse
Let's start by talking about an anime that I still don't quite understand what it's really about. It's one of those rare RomComs that deals with certain sensitive issues, but with a sense of humor and a superficial and absurd approach, as was to be expected, unfortunately. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Naru Narumi, this animated adaptation was produced by Staple Entertainment studio. The anime is about the life of Naoto Watari, a teenager who lives with his younger sister at his aunt's house. He is in love with Yukari Ishihara, his classmate, but he has no time for relationships, especially with the return of his childhood friend, Satsuki Tachibana.
It's exactly what you just thought, a typical love triangle between teenagers, high school students. Or at least that's what I thought at first, given everything that was shown in the first episode. But whatever it is, I can already say that I don't like it at all. Not only because of its characters, who are all typical characters from any generic RomCom: the clumsy and naive protagonist, the popular girl who has feelings for the protagonist, the childhood friend who has always been in love with the protagonist, etc. Honestly, it's because of anime like this that I think it's getting harder and harder to find something original or authentic these days. The only thing that catches my attention are the themes dealt with in this generic story of love and heartbreak.
And the thing is, despite all the clichés, fanservice, and generic characters, this anime deals with themes that can be taboo for some audiences. In short, it talks about certain obsessions that young people and even adults can have in their lives regarding family, romantic relationships, and even sexual relationships themselves. Of course, the humor and all the other flaws in this adaptation may detract from the seriousness and meaning of these themes, but oh well. It's not like it has good animation either; its quality is quite mediocre when compared to other works I've already mentioned or will mention later. So, you'll have to see if you're interested in watching this anime or not. I don't recommend it at all.
Personally, I give it a rating of 4/10 in terms of the romance, comedy, and drama genres.

Empecemos hablando de un anime que aún ahora no termino de entender bien de qué se trata en realidad. Es de esos RomCom poco comunes que trata ciertos temas un tanto delicados, pero con un sentido del humor y una manera tan superficial y absurda como era de esperarse, lamentablemente. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Naru Narumi, esta adaptación animada fue producida por el estudio Staple Entertainment. El anime trata de la vida de Naoto Watari, un adolescente que vive con su hermana menor en la casa de su tía. Él está enamorado de Yukari Ishihara, su compañera de clases, pero no tiene tiempo para relaciones y menos con el regreso de su amiga de la infancia, Satsuki Tachibana.

Lo único que me llama la atención son los temas que trata esta historia genérica de amor y desamor.
Y es que por muchos clichés, fanservice y personajes genéricos que tenga; este anime habla sobre temas que pueden llegar a ser como un tabú para algunas audiencias. En resumidas cuentas, habla de ciertas obsesiones que jóvenes y hasta adultos pueden llegar a tener en sus vidas con respecto a la familia, las relaciones amorosas y hasta las mismas relaciones sexuales. Claro está, puede que su humor y todos los demás defectos que tiene esta adaptación le quiten la seriedad y el sentido a dichos temas, pero bueno. Tampoco es que tenga una buena animación que digamos, su calidad es bastante mediocre si lo comparamos con otras obras que ya he mencionado o que mencionaré más adelante. Así que ya verán si les interesa o no ver este anime, yo no lo recomiendo para nada.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 4/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance, comedia y drama.

There's No Freaking Way I'll be Your Lover! Unless…
Let's talk now about another RomCom that, I warn you right away, is not for everyone. It is, literally, a Yuri (a love story between women). Honestly, and in my own defense, I confess that what hooked me at first was its premise. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Teren Miami and illustrated by Eku Takeshima, this animated adaptation was produced by Studio Mother. The anime tells the story of Renako Amaori, a high school student who has serious problems socializing but appears to be popular, especially since her best friend is the most famous girl in the entire school. However, Mai Oduka doesn't just see Renako as her friend, but as something more.
Beyond the obvious, this anime has a story and characters that, in my opinion, are worth getting to know. And I don't just follow it because it's a well-made Yuri, but because it deals with common teenage issues such as finding true friends in today's world. It also deals with issues such as isolation, egocentrism, pride, and dependence. What interested me most about this anime is its protagonist, since apart from being a heartbreaker, she has certain problems dealing with people of the opposite sex, which gives some sense of why she only hangs out with girls her age. Regardless of whether you like Yuri or not, I must admit that this anime entertained me quite a bit, mainly because of its ironic humor, awkward scenes, and typical RomCom misunderstandings.
But what I liked the most is definitely the way each main character is developed, as entire episodes are dedicated to each one so that you can identify with them. Of course, this is until the usual clichés ruin everything. In terms of audiovisuals, you can see that it has a fairly pleasant level of quality. It's not the best adaptation of the season, but it does manage to give us an aesthetic, fluid, and quite colorful balance. The sound effects and soundtrack are fine, although I prefer the opening theme because of how catchy the song is and its lively, cheerful style. In short, this is an anime dedicated to fans of teenage love stories, regardless of whether they are between women.
Personally, I give it a rating of 7.5/10 in terms of the romance and comedy genre.

Basada en la serie de novelas ligeras homónimas escritas por Teren Miami e ilustradas por Eku Takeshima, esta adaptación animada fue producida por Studio Mother. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Renako Amaori, una estudiante de preparatoria que tiene serios problemas para socializar, pero que aparenta ser popular y más cuando su mejor amiga es la chica más famosa de toda la escuela. Indiferentemente de que te guste o no el Yuri, debo admitir que este anime me entretuvo bastante, más que nada por su estilo de humor irónico, sus escenas incómodas y típicos malentendidos de cualquier RomCom.
Pero lo que más me gustó es definitivamente la forma en la que desarrolla a cada personaje principal ya que le dedican hasta episodios enteros a cada una para así poder identificarte y todo con ellas. Claro, esto es hasta que los típicos clichés de siempre lo arruinan todo. En cuanto a lo audiovisual, se puede notar que tiene un nivel de calidad bastante agradable. Tampoco es que sea la mejor adaptación de la temporada, pero sí consigue darnos un equilibrio estético, fluido y bastante colorido. Los efectos de sonido y la banda sonora están bien, aunque prefiero más su Opening por lo pegajosa que es la canción y el estilo animado y alegre que tiene. En resumen, este es un anime dedicado a ese público fanático de las historias de amor adolescentes, sin importar que sea entre mujeres.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance y comedia.

This seems to be common in countries like Japan, where talent is glorified as a blessing, while those who have nothing special are rejected by society.

Yes, it has its clichés and its ironic humor, full of misunderstandings and awkward moments like any other RomCom, but it also takes great care to develop its characters and create strong bonds with a protagonist who really tries hard to win the approval of the Mikadono sisters. Esto es exactamente eso lo que vemos en este anime, el cual se centra en una historia romántica de tres hermanas talentosas y un joven sin talento con los que van a vivir juntos por cierto tiempo. Si, tiene sus clichés y su humor irónico y repleto de malentendidos y momentos incómodos como cualquier otro RomCom, pero también tiene el detalle de desarrollar muy bien a sus personajes y generar lazos fuertes con un protagonista que sí le echa ganas para conseguir la aprobación de las hermanas Mikadono. En cuanto a lo audiovisual, es de esperarse que veamos un nivel de calidad y detalles bastante notables gracias al estudio a cargo. Lo mismo sucede con su diseño de personajes, paleta de colores brillantes, luces y sombras. En fin, este es un anime que puede llegar a interesarte si te gusta el romance entre adolescentes.

Now it's time to finish this TOP list with what I consider to be the best romance anime I've seen this summer season. Yes, I know what you're going to say: "But it's just another teen romantic comedy". And in part that's true, but unlike the previous ones, this one has something that no other current RomCom has. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Saka Mikami, this animated adaptation was produced by the renowned studio CloverWorks (the same studio that brought us My Dress-Up Darling and Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus this season). The anime tells the story of Rintaro Tsumugi, a student at Chidori Public High School, and Kaoruko Waguri, a student at Kikyo Girls' High School. Both schools hate each other to death, but Rintaro and Kaoruko feel the opposite.
You've probably already seen or read about this anime before reaching this part of the TOP list, which is to be expected given how popular it has become, even before it began airing. This series has a story that, personally, I find charming. Not only because it is completely free of fan service, bad jokes, awkward moments, and all the clichés that every RomCom has, but also because it is clear that they took great care to tell us an authentic and quite emotional love story between two teenagers who, due to social and educational differences, have completely different lives. It is like the typical love story of a couple made up of members of two completely opposite sides.
This love story with a beginning, middle, and happy ending is what earns it this spot in the TOP. And not only that, but you can empathize with the protagonists, their parents, and even their friends and classmates. In terms of audiovisuals, I have no complaints about CloverWorks, as they managed to meet the high expectations of the audience and offered their best (even though they were very busy this season). The character design, the vivid and soft color palette, the visual details, and the fluidity of this animation are fascinating. I also really like the transitions, motion effects, and depth of field. The sound effects aren't bad, but I prefer the soundtrack for more than one or two reasons. In short, this is an anime worth watching, especially if you're a fan of teen romances.

Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Saka Mikami, esta adaptación animada fue producida por el reconocido estudio CloverWorks (el mismo que nos trajo de vuelta a My Dress-Up Darlingll y Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Clause para esta misma temporada). El anime nos cuenta la historia de Rintaro Tsumugi, estudiante de la Preparatoria Pública Chidori y Kaoruko Waguri, estudiante de la Preparatoria Femenina Kikyo. Ambas escuelas se odian a muerte, pero Rintaro y Kaoruko sienten todo lo contrario.
Seguramente ya habrás visto o leído sobre este anime antes de llegar a esta parte del TOP y es de esperarse por lo popular que se ha vuelto, incluso mucho antes de empezar su emisión. Esta serie posee una historia que, en lo personal, me parece encantador. No solo porque está completamente libre de fanservice, chistes malos, momentos incómodos y todo ese cliché que todo RomCom posee. Sino porque se nota que se esmeraron en contarnos una historia de amor auténtica y bastante emotiva entre dos adolescentes que, por diferencias sociales y educativas, tienen vidas completamente distintas. Es como la típica historia de amor de una pareja conformada por miembros de dos bandos completamente opuestos.
Dicha historia de amor con inicio, desarrollo y final feliz es lo que hace que se lleve este puesto en el TOP. Y no solo eso, ya que puedes llegar a empatizar con los protagonistas, sus padres o hasta sus amigos y compañeros de clase. En cuanto a lo audiovisual, no hay nada malo con lo que quejarme de CloverWorks ya que consiguió cumplir con las altas expectativas del público y ofreció lo mejor (a pesar de que estuvieron muy ocupados esta temporada). El diseño de los personajes, la paleta de colores vivos y suaves, los detalles visuales y la fluidez que tiene esta animación es fascinante. También me gustan mucho sus transiciones y sus efectos de movimiento y planos profundos. Los efectos de sonido no están mal, pero prefiero más su banda sonora por más de una o dos razones. En fin, este es un anime que vale la pena ver y más si eres fan de los romances adolescentes.
