Hello, anime fans. This time, I bring you another top list, but this time with five fantasy anime that, in my opinion, are the best I've seen in 2024. Fantasy is one of the most popular, exploited, and repetitive genres in this growing industry, so it's normal that it's currently very difficult to find good works to watch. That's why I make these kinds of posts, to bring you a list of the best series in the genre that are worth watching for different reasons, which I'll mention below. Among the dozens of anime I've seen over the past year, there are a few fantasy works that stood out for their quality, originality, and premise. So stick around until the end, and you're sure to find your favorite later on.
Last year, there were a few eagerly awaited returns, such as the fifth season of DanMachi, which I won't be discussing in this top list. You could even consider all Isekai anime to be part of this genre, as it is a demographic that emerged from a type of work that is very popular in this industry. But anyway, the Top Isekai Animes list is already out, so there's no point in repeating it. I remind you that everything you will read below is just my opinion. I rank and order these anime from 1 to 10, starting with the lowest rating and ending with the highest rating. I have already reviewed several of these anime, so you will see their names linked to them.

Hola, fanáticos del anime. En esta oportunidad les traigo otro top, pero esta vez con cinco animes de fantasía que, considero yo, son los mejores que he visto el pasado 2024. Siendo la fantasía uno de los géneros más populares, explotados y repetitivos que existen en esta creciente industria; es normal que actualmente sea muy difícil encontrar buenas obras para ver. Es por eso que hago este tipo de posts para traerles una lista de las mejores series del género que valen la pena ver por diferentes motivos que les estaré mencionando a continuación. De entre las decenas de animes que he visto el año pasado, hay una que otra obra de fantasía que resaltaron por su nivel de calidad, originalidad y premisa. Así que quédate hasta el final que seguramente encuentres tu favorita más adelante.
El año pasado hubo uno que otro regreso esperado como lo fue la quinta temporada de DanMachi, obra de la cual no hablaré en este top. Incluso se podría considerar que todos los animes Isekai forma parte también de este género al ser una demografía que salió de un tipo de obras muy populares en esta industria. Pero bueno, ya el Top de Animes Isekai está, así que no vale la pena repetir más. Les recuerdo que todo lo que leerán a continuación es solo mi opinión, nomás. La forma en la que clasifico y ordeno estos animes es del 1 al 10, empezando por el de menor calificación y terminando con el de mayor calificación. The Unwanted Undead Adventurer
Let's start this top list with a fantasy anime that is very unusual in its genre. Unlike the typical "hero's journey" premise and all that, we see instead a somewhat strange mix of an adventurer and a monster. This is one of those series that went largely unnoticed at the time, but I'm bringing it up here to remind you how interesting it is. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Yu Okano and illustrated by Jaian, this animated adaptation was produced by Connect Studio. The anime tells us about the life, death, and subsequent resurrection of Rentt Faina, a 25-year-old lower-class adventurer. He is killed by a dragon in a hidden passageway in a dungeon, but immediately afterwards he awakens as a living skeleton (undead).
Many will probably think of fantasy anime with protagonists who are super strong and invincible, characters adored by a harem of girls or idealized by everyone while maintaining a facade or simply playing dumb and innocent. You know, those stories that are repeated over and over again every season, but with a different title, studio, and cast. This anime, on the other hand, breaks with this well-worn mold of the "hero's journey" and brings us a premise that is very different from what we are used to. That is why, and only why, I am including it here in this top list. And it is more than curious that the protagonist himself is the one who dies at the beginning and becomes a monster, an undead creature from a dungeon. Personally, this idea caught my attention from the beginning and did not disappoint me until the end either.
Of course, there are details to mention about this anime, such as its animation, mainly, being from a studio that seems to have not been paid enough to make an animated adaptation that is a little more than just decent. The use of CGI in the monsters and battles, the lack of fluidity and quality in the animation leaves a lot to be desired in this work. However, its animation style, dark color palette, and character designs are not bad. Another point to mention is the fanservice, which surprisingly is not much seen in this work, a detail that is positive in my personal opinion. The mix of action and fantasy and the good character development are noteworthy. This is especially true of the protagonist, who escapes the typical strong, innocent, or stupid character archetype. Instead, he shows remarkable and quite decent development.
Personally, I give it a rating of 7/10 in terms of the fantasy genre.

Empecemos este top con un anime de fantasía muy poco común en su tipo. A diferencia de la típica premisa del “camino del héroe” y todo eso, vemos más bien una mezcla un tanto extraña de un aventurero como un monstruo. Esta es una de esas series que pasaron muy desapercibido en su momento, pero que se las traigo aquí para recordarles lo interesante que es. Basada en la serie de novelas ligeras homónima escrita por Yü Okano e ilustrada por Jaian, esta adaptación animada fue producida por el estudio Connect. El anime nos cuenta sobre la vida, la muerte y la posterior resurrección de Rentt Faina, un aventurero de clase baja de 25 años. Este es asesinado por un dragón en un pasadizo oculto en una mazmorra, pero justo después despierta siendo un esqueleto viviente (undead).
Seguramente muchos pensarán en animes de fantasía con protagonistas que son súper fuertes e invencibles, personajes adorados por un harem de chicas o idealizados por todos mientras mantienen una fachada o simplemente se hacen los tontos e inocentes. Ya saben, esas historias que siempre se repiten una y otra vez cada temporada, pero con un título, un estudio y un elenco diferente. Este anime, en cambio, rompe con este molde bastante usado del “camino del héroe” y nos trae una premisa muy distinta a la que estamos acostumbrados. Es por eso y solo por eso que lo traigo aquí en este top. Y no es más que curioso el hecho de que el mismo protagonista sea el que muere al principio y se convierte en un monstruo, un muerto viviente de una mazmorra. Personalmente, esta idea me llamó mucho la atención desde el principio y no me decepcionó hasta su final tampoco.
Claro está, hay detalles a mencionar con este anime, como es el caso de su animación, principalmente, siendo el de un estudio que parece que no le pagaron lo suficiente como para hacer una adaptación animada un poco más que solo decente. El uso del CGI en los monstruos y las batallas, la poca fluidez y calidad en la animación deja mucho que desear a esta obra. Igualmente, su estilo de animación, paleta de colores oscuros y diseños de personajes no están mal. Otro punto a mencionar es el fanservice, lo cual sorprendentemente no es mucho lo que se ve en esta obra, detalle que es positivo en lo personal. La mezcla de acción con fantasía y la buena construcción de personajes es notable. Sobre todo cuando hablamos del protagonista, quien escapa del típico tipo fuerte e inocente o estúpido de siempre. Sino que muestra un desarrollo notable y bastante decente.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía.

Sengoku Youko
Let's continue with an anime that mixes action with fantasy and the supernatural in a way that is very different from what I have commonly seen in this industry so far. A series that I didn't have high hopes for at the time, but which nevertheless left me with a good story and memorable characters. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Satoshi Mizukami, this animated adaptation was produced by White Fox studio (the same studio that animated the great Re:Zero, by the way). The anime shows us a world where humans and monsters (katawara) are in a never-ending war. However, a couple made up of Tama, a fox spirit who loves humans, and Jinka, a wise young man who hates humans, encounter a young ronin in search of power.
This was one of those anime series that caught my attention from the beginning because it tells a story that is very different from what we know now. A world where humans and monsters live in constant struggle, a somewhat curious mismatched couple, and a young man seeking to become a swordsman. All of this sounds a lot like a mixture of one of those stories from ancient Japan with swordsmen, monsters, gods, and mystical beings. The mix of action with comedy and drama is what stands out most in this anime. And best of all, it doesn't focus on just one main character, but on several. What's more, this anime has a total of 35 episodes, half of which feature a very noticeable change in the main characters. To say that this work has good character development would be an understatement, which is ironic.
I say this because, being mainly an action anime, it gives the impression that it does not have well-developed characters. At first, we only see a small group of individuals trying to fight monsters and humans with evil intentions. But suddenly, the story takes a complete 180-degree turn that quickly leaves you with many questions and curiosity. Unfortunately, the animation doesn't do much to enhance the epic moments of action and confrontation we see in this series, which is quite disappointing. And we're talking about a studio that animated one of the best action sequences seen in recent years (which, by the way, is in Re:Zero, check it out). So, seeing that this anime doesn't have the animation quality it should have makes you lose interest a little. I appreciate that they make good use of visual effects and don't use much CGI, but I don't like many of the shots at all. Anyway, I still think it's worth checking out.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the action and fantasy genre.

Sigamos con un anime que mezcla la acción con la fantasía y lo sobrenatural de una manera muy diferente a lo que comúnmente he visto en esta industria hasta ahora. Una serie que en su momento no le tenía muchas esperanzas, pero que a pesar de todo me dejó con una buena historia y buenos personajes para recordar. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Satoshi Mizukami, esta adaptación animada fue producida por el estudio White Fox (mismo estudio que animó la grandiosa obra de Re:Zero, por cierto). El anime nos muestra un mundo donde los humanos y los monstruos (katawara) están en una guerra interminable. Sin embargo, una pareja conformada por Tama, un espíritu zorro que ama a los humanos y Jinka, un joven sabio que odia a los humanos; se topan con un joven ronin en busca de poder.
Este fue ese esos animes que me llamaron la atención desde el principio al contar una historia muy distinta a lo que conocemos ahora. Un mundo donde humanos y monstruos viven en constante lucha, una pareja dispareja un tanto curiosa y un joven en busca de poder convertirse en un espadachín. Todo esto me suena mucho a la mezcla de una de esas historias de la Japón antigua con espadachines, monstruos, dioses y seres místicos. La mezcla de acción con comedia y drama es lo que llama más la atención en este anime. Y lo mejor de todo es que no se centra solamente en un solo personaje principal, sino en varios. Es más, este anime tiene un total de 35 episodios, de entre los cuales la mitad hacia adelante vemos un cambio de protagonismo que llama mucho la atención. Decir que esta obra tiene buenos desarrollos de personajes sería decir poco, lo cual es irónico.
Esto lo digo ya que, al ser un anime de acción, principalmente, aparenta la idea de que no tiene personajes bien desarrollados. Al principio solo vemos a un pequeño grupo de individuos intentando luchar contra monstruos y humanos con malas intenciones nomás. Pero de repente, la historia da un giro completo de 180 grados que rápidamente te deja con muchas dudas y curiosidad de más. Lamentablemente, la animación no ayuda mucho a ensalzar esos momentos épicos de acción y enfrentamientos que vemos en esta serie, lo cual es bastante decepcionante. Y eso que estamos hablando de un estudio que animó una de las mejores secuencias de acción que se han visto en estos últimos años (que por cierto está en Re:Zero, véanlo). Entonces ver que con este anime no notamos esa calidad de animación que debería tener, hace que uno pierda un poco el interés. Agradezco que se aprovechen bien de los efectos visuales y no usen casi CGI, pero muchos planos no terminan de gustarme en lo absoluto. En fin, de resto considero que vale la pena echarle un vistazo.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de acción y fantasía.

The Witch and the Beast
Let's talk now about an anime that deals with a type of fantasy that many will be familiar with. That's right, I'm talking about "dark fantasy," this work being one of many that became part of the magical and dark world that this genre possesses. In my opinion, it is one of the best works related to witches, wizards, and monsters, in addition to having a much more disturbing tone than it appears to have. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Kousuke Satake, this animated adaptation was produced by Yokohama Animation Laboratory. The anime is about a couple made up of a wizard and a girl with the spirit of a monster solving cases of incidents related to witches in a very British-style world with a mix of the old and the modern.
At the time, I think I was very indifferent to this anime when I saw it on TV last year. But it was thanks to the opinion of my dear @ale.maar, with whom I shared it, that I reconsidered it some time later. The mixture of magic, monsters, magicians, and witches is something that doesn't often end up with such a unique result as this work achieves. I say this in the darkest possible sense, as it is a world in which we remember the era of the "witch hunt" with cases of murders and mysteries that show us the darkest and most evil side of human beings. The use of magic and the way of showing us this interesting and colorful world is another detail that caught my attention in this anime.
But I think the best thing of all was the presentation and construction of its characters, not only the couple we see at the beginning, but also some secondary characters who develop and unfold very well. The battle scenes and confrontations between magicians, monsters, and an aggressive and powerful blonde are among the best. This is where the animation comes in, its visual aspect being the most striking, with a dark style and a palette of cool, neutral colors that combine very well. The details in the animation, the character designs, the rawness, and the visual details are among the best. In addition, there are a few moments in the anime that are quite impactful, these scenes being very difficult to forget. I still don't understand why many people didn't like this work and it went unnoticed afterwards, as it is one of the best works I have seen last year.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9/10 in terms of the fantasy genre.

Hablemos ahora de un anime que trata de un tipo de fantasía que no pocos conocerán. Así es, estoy hablando de la “fantasía oscura”, siendo esta obra una de muchas que llegaron a formar parte de ese mundo mágico y oscuro que posee dicho género. De las mejores obras relacionadas a brujas, magos y monstruos, en mi opinión; además de tener un tinte muchísimo más perturbador de lo que aparenta ser. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Kousuke Satake, esta adaptación animada fue producida por el estudio Yokohama Animation Laboratory. El anime trata sobre una pareja conformada por un mago y una chica con el espíritu de un monstruo resolviendo casos de incidentes relacionados con brujas en un mundo muy al estilo británico con algo de antiguo y moderno entremezclado.
En su momento considero que fui muy indiferente con este anime cuando lo vi en emisión el año pasado. Pero no fue gracias a la opinión de mi querida @ale.maar con la que lo compartí que lo reconsideré tiempo después. Y es que la mezcla de magia, monstruos, magos y brujas es algo que no muchas veces termina dando un resultado tan único como lo logra esta obra. Esto lo digo con el sentido más oscuro posible al tratarse de un mundo en el que recordamos la época de la “caza de brujas” con casos de asesinatos y misterios que nos muestran el lado más oscuro y malvado del ser humano. El uso de la magia y la forma de mostrarnos este mundo tan interesante y vistoso es otro detalle que me llamó mucho la atención en este anime.
Pero creo que lo mejor de todo fue la presentación y construcción de sus personajes, no solamente de la pareja que vemos al principio, sino de algunos personajes secundarios que llegan a desarrollarse y desenvolverse muy bien. Las escenas de batallas y enfrentamientos entre magos, monstruos y una rubia agresiva y con mucha fuerza son de lo mejor. Aquí entra el tema de la animación, siendo su aspecto visual de lo más llamativo al tener un estilo oscuro con una paleta de colores fríos y neutros que combinan muy bien. Los detalles en su animación, los diseños de los personajes, la crudeza y los detalles visuales son de lo mejor. Además, hay uno que otro momento en el anime que llega a impactar bastante, siendo estas escenas muy difíciles de olvidar. La verdad es que no entiendo aún por qué a mucha gente no le gustó esta obra y quedó desapercibida después si es de las mejores obras que he visto el año pasado.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de la fantasía.

Wistoria: Wand and Sword
Let's continue with one of the best animated works I had the pleasure of seeing last year. An anime that became moderately popular at the time thanks to its excellent animation and mix of fantasy, magic, and non-stop action. This curious mix of Harry Potter and Black Clover made it to this spot because of its premise and unparalleled audiovisual aspect. Based on the manga series of the same name written by Fujino Ōmori and illustrated by Toshi Aoi, this animated adaptation was produced by Actas and Bandai Namco Pictures. The anime tells the story of Wil Serfort, a student at the most important magic school in the world. He dreams of becoming a "Magic Seller", but he has a small problem: he can't perform magic. So he'll have to use his intelligence and sword skills to reach the top.
After watching the first episode, I was completely hooked on this anime until the end. This is something that is very difficult to achieve without a good story that grabs your attention or good animation that is entertaining enough. To my surprise, this series has both, as both its story and animation are on par in terms of quality. Of course, it must be admitted that it has a premise very similar to other works such as MASHLE or Black Clover, which we mentioned earlier. But its style, the way it develops its characters, and how interesting this luminous magical world hidden in great darkness looks manages to develop something different from what we see at first. The mix of the magic school with the dungeons is another interesting detail, as here we can see both sides and how our protagonist performs in each case.
In terms of action, this anime captures the viewer's attention with a display of magical power against a boy with a sword and eye protectors. Battle after battle, we see how one of the largest animation studios in the industry demonstrates its superiority by producing such audiovisual masterpieces. The drawing style, the character designs, the incredible fluidity of the animation in each frame, and the vivid and varied color palette of this anime are among the best. While this series has its plot, introducing and developing our unique protagonist in this world of magic and cave monsters, it doesn't fall behind in also introducing us to a varied number of secondary characters who manage to perform very well. Although at the time I raved about this work as I do now, there are details that didn't quite convince me in the end, although it's nothing serious.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in terms of the fantasy and action genre.

Un anime que se volvió medianamente popular en su momento gracias a su excelente animación y mezcla de fantasía, magia y acción sin parar. Esta mezcla curiosa de Harry Potter con Black Clover llegó a este puesto debido a su premisa y su aspecto audiovisual sin igual. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita por Fujino Ōmori e ilustrada por Toshi Aoi, esta adaptación animada fue producida por Actas y Bandai Namco Pictures. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Wil Serfort, un estudiante de la escuela de magia más importante de este mundo. Este tiene el sueño de convertirse en “Magia Vender”, pero tiene un pequeño problema: no puede realizar magia. Así que tendrá que utilizar su inteligencia y sus habilidades con la espada para llegar a lo más alto.
Al ver su primer episodio en emisión me quedé completamente enganchado con este anime hasta el final. Esto es algo que muy difícilmente se puede conseguir sin tener una buena historia que atrape o una buena animación que entretenga bastante. Para mí sorpresa, esta serie tiene ambas cosas, ya que tanto su historia como su animación están a la par en cuanto a calidad. Claro, hay que admitir que tiene una premisa muy parecida a otras obras como MASHLE o el mismo Black Clover que ya mencionamos antes. Pero el estilo que tiene, la forma de desarrollar a sus personajes y lo interesante que se ve este mundo mágico luminoso escondido entre una gran oscuridad logra desarrollar algo diferente a lo que se ve al principio. La mezcla de la escuela de magia con las mazmorras es otro detalle interesante, ya que aquí sí podemos ver ambos lados y cómo nuestro protagonista se desenvuelve en cada caso.
En cuanto a acción este anime captura toda la atención del espectador con una demostración de poder mágico frente a un chico con espada y protectores para los ojos. Batalla tras batalla vemos cómo uno de los estudios de animación más grandes de la industria demuestra su superioridad al producir tales obras maestras audiovisuales. El estilo de dibujo, los diseños de los personajes, la increíble fluidez que tiene su animación en cada frame y la paleta de colores vívidos y variados que tiene este anime es de lo mejor. Si bien esta serie tiene su trama al presentarnos y desarrollar a nuestro protagonista único en su estilo en este mundo de magia y monstruos de las cavernas; no se queda atrás al presentarnos también a una variada cantidad de personajes secundarios que logran desenvolverse muy bien. Si bien en su momento hablé maravillas de esta obra como lo hago ahora, hay detalles que no me terminaron de convencer al final, aunque no es nada grave, igual.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía y acción.

Delicious in Dungeon
We conclude this list with one of the best anime series I had the pleasure and honor of watching last year. And it's no exaggeration to say that this series made as big an impact as Frieren did in 2023. It's a wonderful work in terms of story, characters, and moments that are simply unforgettable. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Ryoko Kui, this animated adaptation was produced by Trigger studio. The anime tells the story of a small group of adventurers who rush into a dungeon with the few resources they have, with the idea of reaching the lowest level and saving their companion who was devoured by a huge red dragon. However, in order to survive, they will have to improvise by preparing different dishes made from the remains of monsters they kill along the way. A gem that I highly recommend you watch.
I remember when I started watching it on TV and initially gave up on it because I didn't think it had enough to hook me from the first episode. Thankfully, I picked it up again some time later, which was one of the best decisions I've ever made, and with good reason. Although it seems like a very calm, comical, and ordinary fantasy anime to pass the time at first, after a while you realize that it's one of those surprises that are a pleasure to watch. It's a work with a very well-developed story from start to finish, in which every decision, every step, or every path our protagonists take leads them to an increasingly entrenched and interesting crossroads to resolve. Despite appearances, this anime manages to offer us a story that is supported by an interesting construction of a medieval and fantastic world, as well as the characters we see and get to know along the way.
Yes, there are many who say that this anime is boring for the most part, that it doesn't have much to offer other than its excellent animation made by one of the most prominent studios of this generation. But personally, it's one of those anime series that are worth watching and relaxing to, enjoying a long, slow, and peaceful journey into the depths of a dungeon that becomes more and more dizzying and shocking the deeper you go. What I can assure you is that this series is in this position because it is one of the best surprises I have had the pleasure of seeing in 2024. Not only that, but it is also one of those audiovisual gems that can easily compete with masterpieces such as Frieren. The striking drawing and animation style, the fluidity and good use of visual effects, the transitions, the vivid and varied color palettes, and the mix of humor with action and adventure are the best this anime has to offer. I repeat, go see this anime, you won't regret it at all afterwards.

Finalizamos este top con uno de los mejores animes que he tenido el placer y el honor de ver en emisión el año pasado. Y no es de exagerar cuando digo que esta serie consiguió impactar tanto, al igual que lo hizo Frieren en su momento en 2023. Una obra maravillosa tanto en historia, personajes y momentos que son simplemente inolvidables. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Ryoko Kui, esta adaptación animada fue producida por el estudio Trigger. El anime nos cuenta la historia de un pequeño grupo de aventureros que se apresuran por entrar en una mazmorra con los pocos recursos que tienen con la idea de llegar al nivel más bajo y salvar a su compañera que fue devorada por un enorme dragón rojo. Sin embargo, para sobrevivir tendrán que ingeniárselas preparando distintos platos de comida hechos por restos de monstruos que van matando por el camino. Una joya que desde ya les recomiendo ver.
Recuerdo cuando empecé a verla en emisión y en primera instancia la dejé por creer que no tenía lo suficiente para engancharme desde su primer episodio. Menos mal y lo retomé al tiempo después, siendo esta de las mejores decisiones que he tomado en mi vida y con mucha razón. Si bien parece ser un anime de fantasía muy tranquilo, cómico y común para pasar el rato al principio, luego de un rato te das cuenta de que es de esas sorpresas que dan gusto poder ver. Una obra con una historia muy bien desarrollada de inicio a fin, en el cual cada decisión, cada paso o cada camino que recorren nuestros protagonistas los llevan a una encrucijada cada vez más y más atrincherada e interesante de resolver. A pesar de las apariencias, este anime logra ofrecernos una historia que se llega a sustentar con una interesante construcción de un mundo medieval y fantástico, a su vez que también están los personajes que vamos viendo y conociendo en el camino.
Si, hay muchos que dicen que este anime es aburrido en su mayor parte, que no tiene mucho para ofrecer más que su excelente animación hecha por uno de los estudios más destacados de esta generación. Pero en lo personal es de esos animes que valen la pena ver y relajarse disfrutando de un largo, lento y tranquilo viaje en las profundidades de una mazmorra que, cada vez que van adentrándose más y más, se vuelve más vertiginoso e impactante. Lo que les aseguro es que esta serie está en este puesto por ser una de las mejores sorpresas que he tenido el placer de haber visto el pasado 2024.
