The Water Magician | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

I don't think I need to mention why I don't like to talk much about isekai anime lately. It's a fact for all of you who read me and are aware of what's being broadcast in this industry that isekais are one of the most exploited types of anime out there. Each season is an opportunity to fill the list with more and more works with the same premise, the same protagonist, and the same typical "hero's journey" story with nothing special to offer. In this case, unfortunately, this is exactly what has happened. Still, unlike many other isekais I've seen before, The Water Magician may have something interesting to offer.

While I think about what is "interesting" about this anime, I'll tell you how much I loved last summer's season. Whether it was the variety of genres or their quality, this season had it all. Maybe that's why I didn't care how many isekai anime were aired, I watched them all without complaint. Of course, there were a couple of anime that, no matter how hard I tried to watch them, I just couldn't stand their poor quality in both animation and story. Those who remember the top isekai animes I made for that season will know which anime I'm referring to.

Creo que no hace falta mencionarles el por qué no me gusta hablar mucho de animes isekai últimamente. Es un hecho para todos los que me leen y están al tanto de lo que se emite en esta industria que los isekais son de los tipos de animes más explotados que hay. Cada temporada es una oportunidad para llenar la lista de más y más obras con una misma premisa, un mismo protagonista y una misma historia del típico “camino del héroe” sin nada especial por ofrecer. En este caso, lamentablemente, sucede esto mismo que les acabo de mencionar. Aún así, a diferencia de muchos otros isekais que he visto antes, The Water Magician puede que tenga algo de interesante.

Be that as it may, what cannot be denied is that, from the beginning, you can see that it has a premise very typical of any other generic isekai, as it deals with the typical protagonist who dies and is reincarnated in a fantasy world. The only difference between this protagonist and the others is that he trains for years in this world until he becomes a great water magician (or whatever it's called). Normally, isekai protagonists always receive a blessing or special abilities that make them invincible from the start.

Otherwise, everything is similar to any other isekai story with the protagonist traveling the world, becoming an adventurer, completing difficult missions, and fighting impossible-to-defeat monsters. As I said, the story has nothing original to offer. You can't even say that the way they develop this protagonist throughout the series is interesting. It's just like any other generic isekai. What may have caught my attention is the way it starts and how they show us the whole process our protagonist goes through to become what he is later on.

Ahora, volviendo a The Water Magician, puede que tanto su animación como su historia fueran las responsables de querer verla hasta el final. Sea como sea, lo que no se puede negar es que, desde el principio, se puede ver que tiene una premisa muy típica de cualquier otro isekai genérico al tratarse del típico protagonista que muere y es reencarnado en un mundo de fantasía. La única diferencia que tiene este con los demás protagonistas es que entrena por años en este mundo hasta convertirse en un gran mago acuático (o como se llame). Normalmente, los protagonistas isekai reciben siempre una bendición o habilidades especiales que los hacen invencibles desde el principio.

De resto, todo es similar a cualquier otra historia isekai con el protagonista viajando por el mundo, convirtiéndose en aventurero, cumpliendo con misiones difíciles y luchando con monstruos imposibles de vencer. Como ya les dije, la historia tampoco tiene nada original para ofrecer. Ni siquiera se puede decir que sea interesante la manera en la que desarrollan a este protagonista a lo largo de la serie. Es como cualquier otro isekai genérico sin más. Lo que puede que me haya llamado la atención es la manera en la que empieza y cómo nos muestran todo el proceso por el que pasa nuestro protagonista para convertirse en lo que es después.

Other than that, neither the monsters, nor the secondary characters, nor even the villains in this anime catch my attention at all. I find it all so generic that it doesn't even make sense to talk about it. Well, except for the odd battle our protagonist has, there's nothing I'm interested in mentioning. As for this, the level of action in this anime is more than decent, very common in any isekai anime. But beyond the audiovisual aspect, there's not much to talk about here either. Something I'd like to highlight and that I find interesting, more than anything else, is that the protagonist doesn't have a harem of female companions who are in love with him.

I say this is interesting because it's very common to see this in any generic isekai anime. The funny thing is that it also doesn't have any fanservice, which always goes hand in hand with these harems of female characters who are always looking to sexualize themselves in some way. In this regard, it's good that The Water Magician doesn't use these cheap methods to attract attention. Instead, we see a relationship between our protagonist and a certain female character that does attract attention. In addition to all this, it's also worth mentioning that our protagonist isn't just some hormonal idiot like most protagonists in other isekais.

De resto, ni los monstruos, ni los personajes secundarios, ni los mismos villanos que tiene este anime me llaman la atención en absoluto. Todo esto lo veo tan genérico que no tiene sentido siquiera hablar de ello. Bueno, a excepción de una que otra batalla que nuestro protagonista tiene, no hay nada que me interese mencionar. En cuanto a esto, el nivel de acción que tiene este anime es más que decente, muy común de cualquier anime isekai. Pero más allá de lo audiovisual, no hay mucho de qué hablar tampoco aquí. Algo que me gustaría destacar y que considero interesante, más que nada, es que el protagonista no tiene ningún harem de compañeras que estén enamoradas de él.

Y digo que esto es interesante ya que es muy común ver esto en cualquier anime isekai genérico. Lo curioso es que tampoco tiene fanservice, cosa que siempre viene de la mano con dichos harems de personajes femeninos que siempre buscan sexualizar de algún modo. Por este lado, está bien que The Water Magician no utilice estos métodos baratos para llamar la atención y, por el contrario, veamos más bien una relación que tiene nuestro protagonista con cierto personaje femenino que sí que llama la atención. Amén de todo esto, también hay que mencionar que nuestro protagonista no es cualquier idiota hormonal como lo son la mayoría de protagonistas de otros isekais.

We also see that he's very energetic and confident in his abilities and skills, unlike other protagonists who are portrayed as if they believe they're the weakest, when in reality they're not, just to make us laugh. Let's say that it mostly relies on awkward moments, jokes, and somewhat risqué pranks. Even so, I think it's an anime that everyone can watch, of course.

Another detail I can't deny about this anime is the way it introduces and develops its secondary characters. Apart from Abel and Ryo's other adventurers and companions, there is one character in particular whose development really caught my attention. Of course, he always falls into the typical joke of being completely overshadowed when the protagonist appears, but even with his presence, this character I'm talking about manages to attract attention. There is also something about the story of this anime that intrigues me a little, and that is how it takes its time to tell us about each event that the protagonist experiences.

Incluso se puede decir que tiene su carácter y su estilo de hacer las cosas y tomar decisiones sin importar con quién se enfrente. Vemos que también es alguien muy enérgico y confiado de sus capacidades y habilidades, no como otros protagonistas que nos lo venden como si creyeran que son los más débiles cuando en realidad no lo son nomás para dar risa. Y hablando de risas, el tipo de comedia que posee este anime no es tan absurdo ni estúpido como otros animes de su estilo. Digamos que mayormente depende de momentos incómodos, chistes y bromas un tanto subidos de tono. Aún así, considero que es un anime que todo el mundo puede ver, claro está.

Otro detalle que tampoco puedo negar de este anime es su forma de introducir y desarrollar a sus personajes secundarios. Aparte de Abel y los demás aventureros y compañeros de Ryo, está el caso de un personaje en particular que me llamó mucho la atención cómo lo desarrollaron. Claro está, siempre cae en el típico chiste de ser opacado por completo al momento de aparecer el protagonista, pero aún con su presencia, este personaje del cual hablo consigue llamar la atención. También hay algo en la historia de este anime que me intriga un poco y es el cómo se toma su tiempo para contarnos cada suceso que vive el protagonista.

Personally, I don't think this story is bad at all, nor is it one of the best isekai stories I've ever seen, far from it. But at least it has everything an action, fantasy, and adventure audiovisual work needs to be entertaining. So if a second season comes out in the future, I might watch it and then update my opinion on it, if I get the chance and feel like doing so.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this anime. This is what caught my attention the most from the beginning, without a doubt. Despite not knowing anything about the studios in charge of this adaptation, I admit that they did an excellent job. At least at the beginning, although the rest of the episodes aren't that bad either. It's not the best animation in the world, but it does stand out quite a bit. The quality of the animation, the drawing style, the character designs, the fluidity, the color palette, and the details are all noteworthy. The same goes for the sound effects and soundtrack. In short, this is the perfect anime for you, especially if you like isekais.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the fantasy, action, and adventure genres.

Es como si lo que vimos en estos 12 episodios de temporada fuera solamente la introducción de algo más interesante que podamos llegar a ver en un futuro, si es que se anuncia una segunda temporada. En lo personal, no está nada mal esta historia, tampoco es que sea de las mejores historias que he visto de un isekai y mucho menos. Pero al menos llega a tener todo lo que hace falta en una obra audiovisual de acción, fantasía y aventura para que sea entretenida. Así que si llega a salir una segunda temporada en el futuro puede que la vea y luego actualice mi opinión al respecto, si es que se me da la oportunidad y los ánimos de hacerlo de aquí allá.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene este anime. De lo que más me llamó la atención desde el principio, indudablemente. A pesar de no conocer nada acerca de los estudios a cargo de esta adaptación, admito que hicieron un muy excelente trabajo. Al menos al principio, aunque en el resto de episodios tampoco es que estén tan mal. No es la mejor animación del mundo, pero sí llega a destacarse bastante. Tanto la calidad de animación, su estilo de dibujo, los diseños de los personajes, la fluidez, la paleta de colores y los detalles que tiene son de lo más destacable. Lo mismo sucede con sus efectos de sonido y su banda sonora. En fin, este es un anime perfecto para ti, sobre todo si te gustan los isekais.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, acción y aventura.
