Sorairo Utility | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

As I mentioned last time, there are certain anime that I usually set aside and don't review after watching them each season. Some are because I didn't like them (either because they're very bad, have too much fanservice, or are very generic), but others are because I don't usually talk about certain genres. The anime I'm bringing you today is one of those I discarded last year simply because it's a Spokon, that is, dedicated to a specific sport. Sorairo Utility is specifically about golf, a sport known throughout the world.

As with Ruri Rocks, this anime also has a mostly female cast, although thankfully it has no fanservice in comparison. The premise caught my attention a bit, and although I was expecting something more exciting than a girl learning to play golf, in the end, I wasn't completely disappointed, quite the contrary. Perhaps it's because of its natural mix of humor with elements from the world of sports and somewhat striking characters. Another reason could be its excellent animation and audiovisual style, which is what attracted me in the first place, to be honest.

Como ya les mencioné la vez pasada, hay ciertos animes que normalmente los dejo a un lado y no les hago reseñas después de verlas en emisión cada temporada. Algunas son porque no me gustaron (ya sea porque son muy malas, mucho fanservice o son muy genéricas), pero otras son porque no acostumbro a hablar de ciertos tipos de géneros. Este anime que les traigo hoy es uno de esos que descarté del año pasado simplemente por ser un Spokon, es decir, estar dedicado a algún deporte en específico. Sorairo Utility trata especialmente del golf, un deporte conocido en todo el mundo.

Así como sucede con Ruri Rocks, este anime también posee un elenco mayormente femenino, aunque gracias a Dios no tiene nada de fanservice en comparación. La premisa me llamó un tanto la atención y si bien esperaba ver algo más llamativo que una chica aprendiendo a jugar golf, al final no me decepcionó por completo sino más bien todo lo contrario. Tal vez y sea por su mezcla natural de humor con elementos de este mundo deportivo y personajes un tanto llamativos. Otra razón pudo ser por su excelente animación y estilo audiovisual, lo cual fue lo que me atrajo en un mismo principio, para ser honestos.

Perhaps some of the three or four people who will read this post aren't interested in watching an anime about girls playing golf, but what's interesting about this anime is the way the story is told and developed. Something that Japan has, and which in turn makes anime so spectacular, is the natural way of telling stories that feel genuinely entertaining and interesting at the same time. You're probably wondering what the heck is so interesting about a high school student learning golf, and this is where I would respond by asking you to think a little about the main plot first.

As I'm sure you've already read above, the anime introduces us to Minami Aoba, a teenager who is just living her life but feels that there is nothing that fascinates her as much as video games. She feels that something is missing in her life to make it "interesting", such as a goal, purpose, or destiny. In this simple way, the anime introduces us to an existential doubt that many of us surely have at some point in our lives. At least that's how it was for me on more than one occasion, so obviously I felt a strong connection with her.

Tal vez a algunos de los tres o cuatro que leerán este post no les interese ver un anime de chicas jugando al golf, pero lo interesante de este anime es la forma en la que nos cuentan y desarrollan su historia. Algo que posee Japón y que, a su vez, convierte al anime en algo tan espectacular es la manera tan natural de contar historias que se sientan auténticamente entretenidas e interesantes al mismo tiempo. Seguramente te preguntarás qué rayos tendrá de interesante una estudiante de secundaria aprendiendo golf y aquí es donde te respondo que pienses un poco en su trama principal, primero.

Como supongo que ya leyeron arriba, el anime nos presenta a Minami Aoba, una adolescente que apenas está viviendo la vida, pero que siente que no hay nada que le fascine tanto, más allá de los videojuegos. Siente que falta algo en su vida para que sea “interesante” como una especie de meta, propósito o destino. De esta forma tan sencilla, el anime nos introduce una duda existencial que seguramente muchos llegamos a tener en algún momento de nuestras vidas. Al menos así sucedió conmigo en más de una ocasión, así que obviamente me sentí un tengo identificado con ella.

Unlike classic fantasy stories where the protagonist is entrusted with a mission to defeat the demon king, save the world, and thus become a hero, reality is much less colorful and fantastical than it seems at first glance. Sorairo Utility shows us that even commonplace activities such as playing golf with amateur players can generate that feeling of satisfaction and achievement that one normally seeks throughout life. Every goal, every game, every "hole in one" feels like an absolute success.

This is the beauty of Slice of Life stories, especially when they are mixed with other genres such as Spokon, as we see in the case of Sorairo Utility. But not only that, it also has a certain level of humor that makes each episode more enjoyable. There is no suggestive or absurd comedy here, just ironic humor with funny scenes and simple jokes. This mostly falls on our protagonist, Minami, who sees her life as if it were a non-linear MMORPG. That's why the most common thing we'll see in this anime are comparisons of golf with video games.

A diferencia de las clásicas historias fantásticas donde el protagonista se le encomienda una misión para vencer al rey demonio, salvar el mundo y así convertirse en un héroe; la realidad es mucho menos colorida y fantasiosa de lo que parece a simple vista. Sorairo Utility nos demuestra que en cosas tan comunes como lo es el jugar golf con gente aficionada puede generar esa sensación de satisfacción y logro que normalmente uno busca siempre a lo largo de su vida. Cada meta, cada partido, cada “hoyo en uno” se siente como un éxito absoluto.

Esto es lo hermoso de los Slice of Life, sobre todo si estos se mezclan con otros géneros como lo es el Spokon, como lo vemos en el caso de Sorairo Utility. Pero no solo es eso, sino que también posee un cierto nivel de humor que hace más agradable cada uno de sus episodios. Aquí no manejan ningún tipo de comedia sugerente o absurda, solo es humor irónico con escenas graciosas y chistes sencillos. Esto mayormente recae en nuestra protagonista, Minami, quien ve su vida como si fuera un MMORPG no lineal. Por eso lo más común que veremos en este anime son comparaciones del golf con cosas de videojuegos.

The great thing about this anime is that, when you watch it, it makes you want to learn more about the world of golf. Especially when you meet Akane Haruka, who, not only because of her appearance or her energetic and positive attitude, completely hooks us and helps us learn certain common details about this sport. We also learn a little about her past and her life, which is interesting because it puts into perspective how a simple sport like golf can make you experience many things. Being a well-known sport, the theme of talent and competition is also part of this story.

Although we don't see much of this at the beginning of the anime, it does come up in a couple of episodes later on, especially when we learn about Akane's story. Unlike our clumsy beginner Minami, Akane is a natural talent in the world of golf. The curious thing is how we get to know her from the first episode and how we then discover all this later on. Without giving away any spoilers for those who are interested in watching it when they finish reading, I will just mention that Akane's case teaches us something very valuable about life.

Lo bueno que tiene este anime es que, al verlo, te generan ganas de querer saber más sobre el mundo del golf. Sobre todo al conocer a Akane Haruka quien, no solo por su aspecto o su actitud enérgica y positiva, nos engancha por completo y nos ayuda a conocer ciertos detalles comunes de este deporte. También conocemos un poco sobre su pasado y su vida, algo que es interesante ya que nos pone en perspectiva cómo un simple deporte como el golf puede hacerte vivir muchas cosas. Al ser un deporte reconocido, el tema del talento y la competencia también es parte de esta historia.

Si bien no vemos mucho sobre esto desde un principio del anime, sí se llega a manifestar en un par de episodios más adelante, sobre todo al conocer la historia de Akane. Y es que, a diferencia de nuestra torpe y principiante Minami, Akane es todo un talento innato en el mundo del golf. Lo curioso es cómo llegamos a conocerla desde el primer episodio y cómo luego descubrimos todo esto más adelante. Sin darles ningún spoiler para el que le interese verla cuando termine de leerme, solo les mencionaré que el caso de Akane nos enseña algo muy valioso sobre la vida.

This is how a simple anime about girls playing golf can really hook us, as well as entertaining us with its unique story and characters. Things like having a hobby in your life, having fun with friends, working as a team, and dedicating yourself to what you love most are just some of the many themes we'll see in this anime. But what we'll see most is pure golf at its finest in every episode, most of which have a very calm pace for a sports anime. There's not much drama, clichés, romance, or anything like that. Just pure golf and girls playing nonstop.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of Sorairo Utility. Yostar Pictures is a studio that almost no one has heard of, but it still does an excellent job when it comes to animating an hour-long show. In this case, as it is an original production, the animation style, character designs, drawing style, and attractive color palette are more highly valued. The fluidity of this anime is quite good for simply being about girls playing golf. The sound effects aren't bad either, but the most notable thing is its soundtrack. Anyway, here's another different, sporty, and interesting anime for you to watch.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the sports and comedy genre.

Es así como un simple anime de chicas jugando al golf nos puede enganchar bastante, aparte de entretenernos también con su historia y personajes tan particulares. Cosas como el tener una afición en tu vida, divertirse en compañía, trabajar en equipo y dedicarte a lo que más te gusta son solo algunos de los muchos temas que iremos viendo en este anime. Pero lo que más llegaremos a ver es puro golf en su máximo esplendor en todos sus episodios, la mayoría con un ritmo muy tranquilo para ser un Spokon. Sin tanto drama, clichés, romance ni nada por el estilo. Puro golf y chicas jugando sin parar.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene Sorairo Utility. Yostar Pictures es un estudio que seguramente casi nadie, pero que aún así realiza un muy excelente trabajo al momento de animar una hora. En este caso, al ser una producción original se le valora más el estilo de animación, los diseños de los personajes, el estilo de dibujo y la atractiva paleta de colores que posee. La fluidez que tiene este anime es bastante buena para ser simplemente chicas jugando golf. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, pero lo más destacable es su banda sonora. En fin, aquí les dejo otro anime diferente, deportivo e interesante para ver.

Personalmente, les doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género del deporte y la comedia.
