Secrets of the Silent Witch | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Among the many generic fantasy anime series that aired last summer, there was only one that particularly caught my attention because it was so different from the rest. Yes, I'm talking about Secrets of the Silent Witch, the anime this post is about. Although its premise didn't stand out as much as its first episode did, both its story and its characters completely captured my attention. Unlike most fantasy anime series that air every quarter, this underrated gem has a story that strays from the typical "hero's journey" storyline.

This alone was reason enough for me to decide to watch it until the end, but then I found more elements and reasons to make this anime one of my favorites in the fantasy genre. It's normal to come to this conclusion knowing that it has a very well-done mix of different genres such as comedy, mystery, and drama, apart from fantasy, of course. But I think the main credit goes to the protagonist, thanks to her unique and unusual personality, as well as her well-developed character and some unforgettable moments in this anime. We mustn't forget the story either, which I think deserves its own credit.

De entre tantas emisiones de animes de fantasía genéricas que hubo en la pasada temporada de verano, hubo solo una que me llamó especialmente la atención por ser muy diferente a los demás. Si, estoy hablando de Secrets of the Silent Witch, el anime del cual trata este post. Si bien su premisa no resaltó tanto como lo logró hacer su primer episodio, tanto su historia como sus personajes sí captaron por completo mi atención. Y es que, a diferencia de la mayoría de obras animadas orientables de fantasía que se emiten cada trimestre, esta joya infravalorada posee una historia que se aleja de la típica historia de siempre del “camino del héroe”.

Ya con esto fue razón suficiente como para decidir verla hasta el final, pero luego encontré más elementos y razones por la cual hacer de este anime uno de mis favoritos del género de fantasía. Y es normal que llegue a esta conclusión al saber que posee una mezcla muy bien lograda de diferentes géneros como lo son -aparte de la fantasía, obviamente- la comedia, el misterio y el drama. Pero creo que el mayor mérito se lo lleva la protagonista gracias a su personalidad única e inusual, además de tener un buen desarrollo y momentos que llegan a ser inolvidables en este anime. Tampoco hay que olvidarse de su historia, la cual considero que merece su propio mérito.

The story revolves around the life of Monica Everett, our protagonist, who is a great genius despite being only 16 years old. She is also one of the "Seven Sages", who are the most powerful wizards in this world. With her title of "Silent Witch", very little is known about her and her life because she spends her time locked away in a cabin isolated from the city. Yes, she is a shy girl with serious communication problems. Her problem is so severe that she invented magic without spells (which earned her that title). However, despite the occasional good deed, Monica has not contributed much to the Kingdom of Ridill since her appointment.

That is why one of her superiors, another Sage named Louis Miller, entrusts her with a special mission of great importance. This mission involves getting close to Prince Felix and protecting him from various assassination attempts that have been taking place at the illustrious Serendia Academy. To do this, Monica will have to enroll as a student in order to fulfill her mission. Obliged, she takes on the job despite doing so against her will, as going back to school is the last thing she wants to do right now. This is how we will see a fantastic story with seemingly ordinary characters in a magical world where anything can happen.

La historia como tal gira en torno a la vida de Mónica Everett, nuestra protagonista, quien es a su vez un gran genio a pesar de solo tener 16 años de edad. Es también una de los “Siete Sabios”, los cuales son los magos más poderosos de este mundo. Con su título de la “Bruja Silenciosa”, muy poco saben sobre ella y su vida debido a que se la pasa encerrada en una cabaña aislada de la ciudad. Si, es una chica tímida y con serios problemas de comunicación. Tanto es su problema que inventó la magia sin conjuro (la cual hizo que se ganara dicho título). Sin embargo, a pesar de una que otra buena hazaña, Mónica no ha aportado mucho más al Reino de Ridill desde su nombramiento.

Es así como uno de sus superiores, otro Sabio llamado Louis Miller le encomienda una misión especial y de muy alta importancia. Esta misión trata de acercarse y proteger al príncipe Félix de diversos intentos de asesinatos que han estado ocurriendo en la ilustre Academia Serendia. Para esto, Mónica tendrá que matricularse como estudiante para así poder cumplir con su misión. Obligada, asume dicho trabajo a pesar de hacerlo contra su voluntad ya que volver a la escuela es lo que menos desea hacer ahora. Así es como veremos una historia fantástica con personajes aparentemente comunes en un mundo mágico donde todo puede ocurrir.

The only difference between this story and many others is its humorous tone, which comes along with the peculiar personality of the protagonist. This is mostly evident when we see our little Monica Everett facing various situations since her admission to Serendia Academy. These seemingly ordinary situations end up leading to something bigger as our protagonist becomes more and more involved. Her difficulty communicating, her enormous nerves, and her extremely low self-esteem will cause her to experience moments that are both embarrassing and entertaining to watch. Personally, I really like this type of humor in an anime.

Mainly because this humor does not rely on fanservice, double entendres, or anything like that. This anime is free of these details, which, unfortunately, are abundant in many other fantasy anime. Another thing I like about this anime is how our protagonist solves each of the problems or situations she has to face at this academy while protecting the prince. I mention this because both her particular personality and her tastes and way of doing things lead us to see unexpected twists and shocking moments. One of the good things about Secrets of the Silent Witch is that it has almost no typical clichés.

La única diferencia que tiene esta historia de muchas otras es su tono humorístico que viene junto con la peculiar personalidad de la protagonista. Mayormente esto ocurre al ver a nuestra pequeña Mónica Everett afrontar diversas situaciones desde su ingreso a la Academia Serendia. Estas situaciones, aparentemente comunes, terminan desembocando en algo más grande al paso que nuestra protagonista se ve involucrada cada vez más y más. Tanto su dificultad para comunicarse como sus enormes nervios y su bajísima autoestima la harán vivir momentos vergonzosos y a la vez divertidos de ver. En lo personal, este tipo de humor me agrada bastante en un anime.

Más que nada porque dicho humor no depende del fanservice ni de chistes de doble sentido ni nada parecido. Este anime está libre de estos detalles que, lamentablemente, muchos otros animes de fantasía abundan muchísimo. Otra cosa que me gusta de este anime es cómo nuestra protagonista soluciona cada uno de los problemas o situaciones que tiene que afrontar en esta academia mientras protege al príncipe. Esto lo menciono ya que tanto su personalidad particular como sus gustos y forma de hacer las cosas hacen que veamos giros inesperados y momentos impactantes. Una de las cosas buenas que también tiene Secrets of the Silent Witch es que no posee casi ningún cliché típico.

Well, apart from the fact that the protagonist is one of the most powerful witches in this fantasy world, it's very typical of any anime of this style. But even so, the fact that the entire anime is based more on academic life, where it is forbidden to draw attention for various reasons (starting with her mission to protect the prince), means that we see our prodigious protagonist solving problems in a different way than the generic protagonists of any other anime usually do. And speaking of generic things, this anime doesn't have many action scenes, to say the least.

This may put you off and make you think twice about watching this anime, and I completely understand that. Nowadays, it's common for western audiences to expect all anime they consider good to have non-stop action and battles, as if all genres and works were the same. But this kind of backward mentality doesn't apply here; here, any type of work is valued as long as it's well done. In the case of Secrets of the Silent Witch, it's perfect for you if you're looking for a unique story about a teenage witch with communication issues who faces unusual problems at a prestigious academy.

O bueno, aparte del hecho de que la protagonista sea una de las brujas más poderosas de este mundo fantástico es algo muy típico de cualquier animes de este estilo. Pero aún así, que todo el anime se base más en una vida académica donde está prohibido llamar la atención por diversas razones (empezando por su misión de proteger al príncipe), hace que veamos a nuestra prodigiosa protagonista resolver problemas de una forma distinta a como comúnmente lo solucionan los protagonistas genéricos de cualquier otro anime. Y hablando de cosas genéricas, este anime no tiene muchos momentos de acción que digamos.

Posiblemente esto último te eche para atrás y te haga pensar en ver o no este anime y lo comprendo completamente. Ahora es común que el público occidental espere que todos los animes que consideren buenos tengan acción y batallas sin parar como si todos los géneros y obras fueran iguales. Pero aquí no se aplica este tipo de mentalidad retrógrada, aquí se valora cualquier tipo de obra siempre y cuando esté bien hecha. En el caso de Secrets of the Silent Witch se puede decir que es perfecta para tí si lo que buscas es una historia única de una bruja adolescente con problemas de comunicación que afronta problemas poco comunes en una academia prestigiosa.

Apart from all this, the anime also has good characters and very notable development, as I mentioned before. To give an example, let's take the case of our protagonist, Monica Everett, who, in fulfilling her mission at the academy, has to face her anxiety and communication problems on a daily basis as she has to interact with all kinds of classmates and unusual people. Throughout the episodes, we can see the reasons why she is so insecure and shy despite being a prodigy of magic and someone revered by many young people. The same is true of other characters we meet later on.

Although they are only the main characters, the characters in this anime are very well developed, and I'm not just saying that because of everything we get to see and learn about each of them throughout the episodes. It's also because of the natural way in which we become familiar with each of them. Let's remember that what we see are ordinary students living their academic lives in an ordinary way, only with magic and unusual situations thrown in. Apart from this, we can also notice the typical class distinctions and treatment that each one receives, as well as how some of the problems our protagonist faces are related to political and social issues in this world.

Aparte de todo esto, el anime también cuenta con buenos personajes y un desarrollo muy notable, como he mencionado antes. Para poner un ejemplo, pongamos el mismo caso de nuestra protagonista, Mónica Everett, quien al cumplir con su misión en la academia tiene que diariamente afrontar sus problemas de ansiedad y de comunicación al tener que relacionarse con todo tipo de compañeros de clase y personas poco comunes. Podemos ver a lo largo de los episodios las razones del por qué ella es así de insegura y tímida a pesar de ser una prodigio de la magia y alguien venerada por muchos jóvenes, inclusive. Lo mismo ocurre con otros personajes que vamos conociendo más adelante.

Aunque sean solo los principales, los personajes que tiene este anime tienen un muy buen desarrollo y no solo lo digo por todo lo que logramos ver y conocer de cada uno a lo largo de los episodios. Sino también por la manera tan natural de nosotros familiarizarnos con cada uno de ellos. Recordemos que lo que veremos son estudiantes comunes viviendo sus vidas académicas de forma común, solo que con magia y situaciones poco comunes de por medio. Aparte de esto también podemos notar la típica distinción de clases y tratos que cada uno tiene, además de cómo algunos de los problemas que nuestra protagonista afronta están relacionados con temas políticos y sociales de este mundo.

While it doesn't have all the action that many would expect from a typical fantasy anime, I believe that the story it has to tell is even more valuable than that of any generic work today. It has a good pace, as well as humor that can be enjoyed by all audiences. It also has its moments of action, but they are few and far between, although that doesn't detract from how impactful they are overall. It even has its dramatic moments where we can see the background of certain situations that our protagonist experiences in this academy and how this reminds her of her sad past. I would say that it even has romance, but this is not seen until the end.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of Secrets of the Silent Witch. Despite not being very well known, the studio in charge of this adaptation did a great job with this anime. To begin with, the animation is excellent. It's not the best out there, but it easily stands out from most. The character designs, the vivid color palette, the effects, and the visual details are the most noteworthy aspects, especially in scenes involving magic or action. As for the sound effects, they are well done, but they are nothing compared to the soundtrack of this anime. In short, if you are looking for something different from the typical fantasy work, then you have to watch this anime.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the fantasy and comedy genre.

Si bien no tiene toda la acción que muchos esperarían de un anime de fantasía cualquiera, considero que la historia que tiene para contarnos es aún más valiosa que la de cualquier obra genérica actual. Tiene un buen ritmo, además de un humor disfrutable para todo tipo de público. También tiene sus momentos de acción, pero son contados, aunque eso no le resta para nada lo impactantes que son por sobre todo. Incluso tiene sus momentos dramáticos donde podemos encontrarnos con el trasfondo de ciertas situaciones que vive nuestra protagonista en esta academia y cómo esto le recuerda a su triste pasado. Les diría que tiene hasta romance, pero esto no se ve sino hasta el final.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene Secrets of the Silent Witch. A pesar de no ser muy conocido, el estudio a cargo de esta adaptación hizo un grandioso trabajo con este anime. Para empezar, la animación es excelente, no es de las mejores que existen, pero logra destacarse por sobre la mayoría muy fácilmente. Los diseños de los personajes, la paleta de colores vivos, los efectos y detalles visuales son de lo más destacable. Sobre todo en escenas de magia o acción. En cuanto a los efectos de sonido está todo bien logrado, pero no es nada comparado con la banda sonora que tiene este anime. En fin, si buscas algo diferente que la típica obra de fantasía de siempre, entonces tienes que ver este anime.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía y comedia.
