At first, I said that this anime was quite underrated due to its lack of success and how easily people forgot about it over time. Last season was one of the best for the science fiction genre in the anime industry, and this series showed a lot of promise, especially since it had the same director who brought us the famous masterpiece Cowboy Bebop. However, despite its excellent production values, Lazarus seems to have failed to live up to the high expectations that the public had for it. Personally, I think the biggest mistake that many people (including the director and marketing team) made was to constantly compare it to the aforementioned 90s science fiction classic.

I say this because, independently, Lazarus has a very well-constructed story set in a futuristic, dystopian world that is very similar to the real world, not to mention its unique characters and excellent action sequences. For any science fiction fan or anyone new to the anime industry, Lazarus may be the perfect choice to watch and enjoy without wanting anything more. In this review, I will focus more on making a much more general and less specific observation, without giving away any spoilers—as always—or making direct comparisons to other well-known titles (that have not already been mentioned above). I want to justify why I consider this anime to be better than many people think, and not just give the mere excuse that it was made by MAPPA and that's it.

Al principio dije que este anime fue bastante infravalorado debido al poco éxito que tuvo y lo fácil que la gente llegó a olvidarlo con el tiempo. La temporada pasada fue de lo mejor para el género de la ciencia ficción en la industria del anime y esta serie prometía bastante, sobre todo por tener al mismo director que nos trajo la famosa obra maestra de Cowboy Bebop. Sin embargo, a pesar de lo excelentemente producido que está, Lazarus parece no haber alcanzado llenar las altas expectativas que tenía el público desde entonces. En esta reseña me centraré más en hacer una observación mucho más general y menos específica, sin caer en spoilers -como siempre- ni hacer comparaciones directas de otros títulos conocidos (que no se hayan mencionado ya anteriormente). Quiero justificar el por qué considero que este anime es mejor de lo que muchos creen y no solo dar la mera excusa de que fue hecho por MAPPA y ya.

Starting with its plot, it is interesting that Lazarus reminds us of those famous science fiction films that became very popular in the 1990s. A supposedly utopian future that ends up being more dystopian than any other future ever seen on the big screen, and a supposed medicine that cures pain but suddenly becomes the cause of death for millions of people. All this while a group of five people search for an eccentric doctor and genius who has been missing for three years and whose whereabouts are unknown. At first glance, we can say that it sounds like any typical action and science fiction film that would become very popular on this side of the world if it were made as a Hollywood feature film.

But beyond appearances, the story that unfolds throughout the episodes of this original series contains many social, political, and moral messages and themes that give us a lot to think about today. Starting with technology and the typical discourse of how humanity has become quite dependent on it. The same is true of medicine and how the big pharmaceutical companies or corporations in charge of this huge market manipulate the masses and use the society as "lab rats" for their tests while taking every last penny out of their pockets. There is even talk of the wars going on in the world and how medical advances have depended heavily on this dark market, as in the case of the aforementioned Hapna and how it became a deadly weapon in this futuristic world.

Empezando por su trama, es interesante que Lazarus nos recuerde a esas películas famosas del género de la ciencia ficción que se popularizaron mucho desde la época de los 90s. Un futuro supuestamente utópico que termina siendo más distópico que cualquier otro futuro ya visto en la pantalla grande y una supuesta medicina que cura el dolor que se convierte de repente en la causa de la muerte de millones de personas. Todo esto mientras un grupo de cinco personas buscan a un doctor y genio excéntrico que ha estado desaparecido por tres años y que nadie conoce su paradero. A simple vista podemos afirmar que suena como a cualquier cinta típica de acción y ciencia ficción que en este lado del mundo se volvería muy popular si fuera hecha como largometraje hollywoodense.

Pero más allá de las apariencias, la historia que vamos conociendo a lo largo de los episodios que tiene esta serie original posee muchos mensajes y temas sociales, políticos y morales que en la actualidad nos ponen a pensar bastante. Empezando por la tecnología y el típico discurso de cómo la humanidad se ha vuelto bastante dependiente de ella. Lo mismo sucede con la medicina y cómo las grandes farmacéuticas o corporaciones que están a cargo de este enorme mercado manipulan a las masas y utilizan a la sociedad como “ratas del laboratorio” para sus pruebas mientras les sacan hasta el último centavo de sus bolsillos. Incluso se habla de las guerras que hay en el mundo y de cómo los avances médicos han dependido bastante de este oscuro mercado, como es el caso del ya mencionado Hapna y cómo se volvió un arma asesina en este mundo futurista.

This is where our supposed "enemy" appears, who is nothing more than the antagonist and victim of everything that happens in this story. Dr. Skinner goes from being the most peaceful and kind man in the world because of his wonderful medicine to being the most wanted and dangerous man in this dystopian future. Despite his limited appearances throughout the series, it must be acknowledged that his influence on this society and the events that occur make him the center of everything and a threat to governments and powerful figures. However, his final message leaves us thinking deeply about the purpose of each individual and how life is not always as good as we think it is. On the other hand, we have "Lazarus", a special team of people with different abilities whose mission is to find Skinner and bring him to justice before the deadline expires and most of humanity is wiped out for having ingested Hapna at least once in their lives.

Perhaps the most striking and interesting thing about this series is this team of individuals with a past, unusual problems, and special abilities that make them the best team that has ever existed. To talk about their particularities, their virtues, their flaws, and their stories would be to spoil the whole series, so I'll spare you that part. I'm not a big fan of this type of story involving teams and all that; I'm more of a fan of individual protagonists or pairs, at most. However, I clearly have my exceptions, such as the aforementioned masterpiece Cowboy Beebop. This team is very different from the famous bounty hunter team we met in the 90s.

Es aquí donde aparece nuestro supuesto “enemigo”, quién no es más que el antagonista y la víctima de todo lo que sucede en esta historia. El Dr. Skinner pasa de ser el hombre más pacífico y amable del mundo por su maravillosa medicina a ser el hombre más buscado y peligroso que existe en este futuro distópico. A pesar de lo poco que aparece a lo largo de la serie, hay que admitir que su influencia en esta sociedad y en los sucesos que ocurren lo convierten en el centro de todo y en una amenaza para gobiernos y figuras poderosas. Tal vez lo más llamativo e interesante de esta serie sea este equipo de individuos con un pasado, problemas no tan comunes y habilidades especiales que los convierten en el mejor equipo que ha existido nunca. Hablar de sus particularidades, sus virtudes, sus defectos y sus historias es spoilearles toda la serie; así que me ahorraré mejor esta parte. No soy muy fan de este tipo de historias donde se involucran equipos y todo eso, soy más fan de protagonistas individuales o en pareja, como máximo. Sin embargo, está claro que tengo mis excepciones, como es el caso de la obra maestra ya mencionada anteriormente llamada Cowboy Beebop. El caso de este equipo es muy distinto al famoso equipo de cazarrecompensas que conocimos en los 90s.

It's no secret that there are certain similarities between some of the characters, such as Axel Gilberto, who has stood out the most from the entire Lazarus team. However, beyond the comparisons that I said I wouldn't make here, I would like to talk to you about the very special way in which the director of this series develops his characters. Starting from an apparently simple but very familiar construction of a futuristic world at its peak of technological advancement, they take each main character and develop them using different cases of upbringing, education, betrayal, sacrifice, and other unusual traumas. In this series, the team of "heroes" we know may give us an apparent idea of what they are like, but in the end, they are not at all what they seem.

Personally, I really like it when a work takes its time to develop the story and its characters well. This is something that happens in Lazarus and that many people simply did not like at all because some of its episodes were "slow and boring". However, in each case, we see a different facet and characteristic of this futuristic world and the characters who wander around endlessly searching for Dr. Skinner while finding clues and signs everywhere. This way of charting a path while telling a story with a fairly realistic view of this futuristic world is one of the best things about it. Even with all that said, there's no denying that it does have its fair share of action. Especially chases with our daring Axel Gilberto jumping and running everywhere.

This is probably why many people decided to watch this anime and ended up disappointed. I guess they were expecting something like Jujutsu Kaisen: a story that focuses more on brutal fights and non-stop action than a well-crafted story and well-developed characters. But hey, in my case, I enjoyed it quite a bit, as the choreography of the chases, fights, shootouts, and explosions reminded me of the golden age of Hollywood's aviation and science fiction genre. On the other hand, there's also the comedy aspect of this series. It's not heavy humor or anything like that, but rather something much lighter and more natural that gives the story, and especially some of its characters, a sense of calm and fun.

Para nadie es un secreto que hay cierta similitud en uno que otro personaje, como es el caso de Axel Gilberto que fue el que más se ha destacado de todo el equipo Lazarus. Sin embargo, más allá de las comparaciones que dije que no haré aquí, quisiera hablarles sobre la forma tan especial que tiene el director de esta serie de desarrollar a sus personajes. Partiendo de una construcción aparentemente simple, pero muy familiar de un mundo futurista en su máximo punto de avance tecnológico, toman a cada personaje principal y los desarrollan utilizando casos distintos de crianzas, educación, traiciones, sacrificios y otros traumas poco comunes. En esta serie puede que el equipo de “héroes” que conocemos nos den una idea aparente de cómo son, pero al final no son para nada lo que aparentan.

En lo personal me gusta mucho que una obra se tome su tiempo para desarrollar bien la historia y sus personajes. Esto es algo que sucede en Lazarus y que a mucha gente simplemente no les agradó del todo por lo “lenta y aburrida” que eran algunos de sus episodios. Sin embargo, en cada caso vemos una faceta y característica distinta de este mundo futurista y de los personajes que andan de acá para allá buscando sin cesar al Dr. Skinner mientras encuentran pistas y señales por doquier. Esta forma de trazar un camino a su vez que nos cuenta una historia con una visión bastante realista de este mundo futurista es de lo mejor. Aún con todo esto dicho, no hay que negar tampoco que sí tiene su buena porción de acción. Sobre todo de persecuciones con nuestro atrevido Axel Gilberto saltando y corriendo por doquier.

Seguramente y sea por esto que mucha gente decidió ver este anime y terminó decepcionándose. Supongo que esperaban un Jujutsu Kaisen o algo así: una historia que se centre más en peleas brutales y acción sin parar que una historia bien hecha y personajes bien construidos. Pero bueno, en mi caso lo disfruté bastante, ya que las coreografías de persecuciones, peleas, disparos y explosiones me hicieron recordar la época dorada del género de la aviación y la ciencia ficción de Hollywood. Por otro lado, también está el caso de la comedia que también tiene esta serie. No es un humor pesado ni nada parecido, sino que es algo mucho más ligero y natural que le da una sensación de tranquilidad y diversión a la historia y sobre todo a algunos de sus personajes.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this anime. With two studios in charge, one of which is MAPPA, we can expect a level of quality superior to any other series broadcast last season. This is confirmed not only by the incredible fluidity of the animation and the characters' movements, but also by the visual aspect and designs. The cityscapes, some of which are pure cyberpunk futuristic style, while others are destroyed, flooded, or even abandoned as if this were a dystopian world, are also very striking. The mixed color palette and excellent use of light and shadow are also noteworthy.

The sequence and choreography we see in the chases and fights are superbly done from start to finish, with no visual detail overlooked. I also love the visual effects, especially the explosions. Something else I find fascinating about the anime is the frequent use of 2D animation with only some environments made in 3D or CGI. This works very well, instead of animating characters in 3D just to make their movements more fluid, which ultimately makes it look like a poorly rendered video game. The sound effects are also very well done, but what I like most is the soundtrack, without a doubt. The composition of the melodies and their use in action and drama scenes is top-notch. In short, if you're a fan of science fiction and looking for an anime worth watching, then check out Lazarus.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the science fiction and action genre.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene este anime. Con dos estudios a cargo, siendo uno de estos MAPPA, es de esperarse un nivel de calidad superior a cualquier otra serie emitida en la temporada pasada. Esto lo podemos confirmar no solo con la increíble fluidez que tiene la animación y los movimientos de los personajes, sino también por el aspecto visual y los diseños que poseen. Las vistas de las ciudades, siendo algunas al puro estilo futurista tipo cyberpunk mientras que otras se ven destruidas, inundadas o hasta abandonadas como si fuera esto un mundo distópico también llama mucho la atención. La paleta de colores mixta y el uso excelente de las luces y las sombras también es digno de notar.

La secuencia y coreografías que vemos en las persecuciones y las peleas están supremamente hechas de principio a fin y sin escapar ningún detalle visual. Los efectos visuales también me encantan, sobre todo los de las explosiones. Algo que me fascina también del anime es el uso frecuente de la animación en 2D con solo algunos entornos hechos en 3D o CGI. Esto es algo que combina muy bien, en vez de animar a personajes con 3D solo para darle más fluidez en los movimientos y que al final parezca esto un videojuego mal renderizado. Los efectos de sonido también están muy bien hechos, pero lo que más me gusta es su banda sonora, sin lugar a dudas. La composición de las melodías y su uso en escenas de acción y de drama es de lo mejor. En resumen, si eres fan de la ciencia ficción y buscas un anime que valga la pena ver, entonces mírate Lazarus.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción y la acción.
